I arrived back through Luton last night landing at just after 10pm. Usual backlog at passport control, but the e-passport gate queue moved quite quickly with all gates open. I noticed an additional 5 e-passport gates have been built and looked close to being operational, which would take total to 15.

This is all about further reducing border control staff numbers. e-passport readers are great when they work but when they don't they seem to be often off-line for weeks at a time.

I am not too sure the 'mini' tower is being bulldozed unless Signature have lots of spare cash? Huge generator within and below, plus it is being used as their ramp office.

In their planning application, which I have just re-read, the watch tower is being demolished after they have moved into their new home which confirms a story I heard a while ago.

Also while it shows on the before plans it has gone in the after plan.

November

Luton is up 12.9% to 955,068 in November but dropped below the magic 1 million figure for a month for the first time since February. Rolling total is now 14,449,094 passengers up by 2.2 million passengers from last year.

Time is right for rapid rail link to London Luton Airport - Airport World Magazine

Also the 26 ILS is being flight tested on the 16th which is the same date the ILS reduction to CAT 3A at both ends is meant to end unless it is changed again.

construction update

Work continues on digging out route for the duel carriageway.

With the crane disappearing for the last couple of days and the rest of the former bus station still a bit of a mess this might be as far as the steelwork goes this side of Christmas.

With the passenger footbridge soon to open it is a shame that despite the builder putting in slotted drains at the entrance the floor slopes in the wrong direction leaving large puddles that all passengers using the stairs will have to cross. The photo was taken a few hours after it had stopped raining and the floor was actually drying out! I find it hard to believe that the airport would sign this off as acceptable.

How the footbridge could have been

With a temporary heating duct installed to dry the painted floor and the air vents covered to keep the heat in this is the finished product. Got to say I am disappointed as the best description is probably utilitarian with both the ceiling and side wall not covered in something pleasing and the infamous opaque plastic windows.

LLA

The taxi rank has been moved so the new horseshoe shaped taxi rank can be built. When finished this will sit between the drop off zone and the coach bays

Thanks, as always LTNman for the update.

Uummmm, you expected something more from the short term functioning as delineated by our friends at the Council ...??

Wow that footbridge looks cold and depressing. No expense spared in that one!

It certainly looks like every penny that could be saved has been saved in the construction of the passenger footbridge although in the big scheme of things it would have added maybe 1% to the cost to put in a proper finish. It has zero passenger appeal and those large puddles inside the building are the icing on the cake. It is clear that the airport really does see its future as being at the bottom of the market although the bottom of the market has served it well.

The airports new footbridge had me scratching my head as it looked so familiar. Then it hit me as it is a copy of the towns railway station footbridge that was knocked down in 2011 as being awful, not fit for purpose and an eyesore.

Foot bridge

I agree not very appealing but once the airport surcomes to even further growth then cosmetic updates will I am sure be carried out around the airport. The passenger figures for November were expected and come 2018 then no doubt no month will handle less than 1 million passengers. I wonder if with the loss of the Copenhagen service by EasyJet that growth will slow for 2017? However I have said it before that EasyJet commited to continued growth and hopefully another 8 to 9 further aircraft are pencilled in for Luton in the next few years. As has become apparent, the airport continues to surprise us all and that leaves me to wonder what new airline (s) if any or new routes (not yet announced) will come to Luton in 2017?

Luton main station

Spanish eyes, I too thought of that ugly bridge (though a petition was raised to protect it) which dismayed me but I considered many supporters of keeping that bridge were just being nostalgic. However thankfully it has gone and the area now appears to have been brought into the 21st Century and reinvented itself as the transport interchange which admittedly is now pleasing to the eye though beggars frequent the area.

Pools of water on a painted floor = slip hazard I would have thought. It would have been better to have tarmac running through the entrance lobby as the paint will be covered in thousand of footprints from the puddles.

Careful examination of the embankment being dug out on the last page and this map with the duel carriageway and mass transit system shows that the embankment and exit road will have to be removed within a couple of years for the cut and cover tunnel to be dug out.

The map shows nicely that the full width of the embankment by the road tunnel will be where the cut and cover MTS tunnel will exit from Taxiway Alpha.

It seems a lot of work is being done at great expense that won't be in place for that long while at the same time money is being cut to the bone on the finish for the footbridge.

Does anyone know when the extension to the 08 threshold taxiway will start? I saw the other day there are markings on the compass swing bay but no further work seems to have happened.

Also does anyone know if the junction at the intersection of taxiways "B" and "A" will be modified to be more user friendly rather than the uncomfortable 145 degree turn thats required at the moment going from B1 to A5 or vice versa?

The plans show that it is indeed being smoothed out but it is also worth noting that the new parallel taxiway at the 08 end is at a different distance from the runway than the existing taxiway to 26.

As for the start date it is part of phase 1 but with winter here I am guessing it will be started now in the spring for completion in 2017.

Luton obviously has a reputation for building quality structures.
Just look at Platform 6 in Spanish eyes photo and they were proud enough to put the Luton sign up on it- classic!! What was that all about?
