Re: 'Does BHX need three FBO's?'

There is only one proper 'FBO' which is the Marshall one, the ex-Eurojet facility built in 2012. Signature or Blue City are more handling agents only with minimal amenities, no hangarage etc. The Marshall facility has all the facilities you'd expect out of a typical, full service US or international FBO. There's a huge difference between what's on offer between them.

Also Blue City specialize in cargo, Signature mainly cater for those that arrive by car at the aircraft ready to go. Unfortunately both get hampered by what they can do because of the facilities they have in the Old Terminal. Marshalls have a huge advantage by having a building that was designed specifically as an FBO, and very smart it was inside!

Marshall Aviation Services setting up at Birmingham Airport

The big question is 'where' at BHX are they setting up at?

Marshalls have taken over the Eurojet FBO / Hangar / Maintenace Facility

Having visited the FBO when Eurojet were in there I can confirm it is a World Class facility

Flybe disappoints yet again

According to the Birmingham Mail, Flybe is axing routes to Oslo, Porto, Toulouse, Ireland West and Waterford. Perhaps not surprising but yet another example of Flybe axing routes without giving them a chance to prove themselves (specifically I'm talking about Oslo and Cologne here).

Why would anyone book with Flybe for more than a few weeks out when the flights might be cancelled at the drop of a beancounter's hat.

Flybe

I think this has been discussed before - but I agree with your view.

I accept it's yield that counts but I was at BHX in early January and saw the flight to Porto depart, with a load factor of about 50%. I'd have thought with that kind of load in what is surely a quiet month, it would have been worth carrying on into the summer. Their route planning seems very hit and miss.

Flybe

The Flybe news is old news, a contact has informed me that Olso may return for the winter but do not shoot the messenger.

Knock has always been good for my travel lite and bmi baby can't understand why flybe didn't make a go of the route considering numbers had increased on the route last year.

In cancelling these routes there are operating a three times weekly service to Deauville from end June to early September. Looking at the prices being advertised they don´t seem to be many takers at the moment. I am sure the route planning department have gone Barking!

Did the Oslo route a week or so ago, loads were very poor, counted 28 px from BHX and about 30 on the return. Whilst not wanting to stereotype people there seemed to be mostly leisure pax (including us who availed ourselves of the recent £15 offer). Shame really as Oslo is a wonderful city.

Oslo is indeed a wonderful city, if somewhat expensive !!

I wonder with Norwegian starting flights from BHX to Spain next month if sooner or later OSL-BHX might appear ? must be some scope if LGW can operate 4 x daily

LNIDA

As someone who usually has their ear fairly close to the ground, Norwegianwise, do you know something that we don't - or is your Oslo comment just conjecture?

Thanks Centre Cities. I prefer to vote with my feet and avoid Flybe altogether except where there is no choice (i.e. UK domestic). This is due to the random announcement and cancellation of routes (some of which defy logic - Deauville????), their less than stellar punctuality record and the fact that I can usually get flights with full service carriers for the same money or not much more.

I know what you mean Bob. I have no confidence in an airline that so readily pulls routes, and surely they have shot themselves in the foot here.
It doesn't exactly help the airport either. Some friends of mine who are half french and were heading to Toulouse to see grandparents are now going via Amsterdam, because they still want to use BHX for convenience.

Not everyone will see it that way and will look to other UK airports.

Whilst I have no clue what's going on at FlyBE with their route planning department, they have reliably carried me to and from Germany - mainly BHX to HAJ, but also STR - since they took over BACon in 2007. I must have had some 50 flights on those two routes alone over the years, and the large majority of those flights were a pleasurable experience - for often reasonable prices.

Ironically, I also found the customer service at FlyBE to be very responsive to my needs when things went wrong. I don't know whether that's helped by me being a regular customer or not, but I have no complaints.

For all the mess with their route openings and closures, they provide a central and vital service at BHX. I just hope they can get their act together again in terms of some sort of clear strategy.

Agree to an extent, but would say that they do have a strategy. Namely to identify routes that they believe will cut the mustard, but not to throw good money after bad for any longer than a few months; hence the premature closure of Oslo and the other routes they are apparently abandoning this summer. Perhaps their analysis of likely routes needs honing somewhat.

in the "old days" routes were given a couple of years to develop, sadly, in today's short-termist world, where immediate results are the order of the day to satisfy "the City" it ain't going to happen.

Icelandair

Today was the inaugural Icelandair service and I was just wondering if anyone knew of the loads on the flight? It's good to see Birmingham expanding and hopefully will successfully expand for many years to come

Birmingham Airport wins big from Bogota at Routes Americas

Congratulations to the team from Birmingham winning big.

On the third day of Routes Americas held in Denver this year, William Pearson, Aviation Development Director, Birmingham Airport won a special prize, namely a phone charger, from Bogota Airport’s draw. This year’s Routes Americas welcomed over 600 delegates from 51 countries, including 80 airlines, 280 airports as well as 38 tourism bodies.
However as this article is taken from an American site I'm wondering if it's Birmingham Alabama!
