Vueling

Barcelona is bookable into winter 2x weekly Mon and Fri, the website shows up as far as 14th Dec at the moment.

Norwegian

Nothing bookable beyond the end of October despite other airports having their flights available. EDI's Malaga flight, which was released at the same time as the BHX flights, is bookable into January.

More to come or yet another BHX one season wonder?

Turkmenistan have used a B772 on the flight to BHX tonight. I believe they only have one or two B752s in use at the moment (are the others stored or away on overhaul?) With no replacement for the B752s on order, will we see more B738s with the occasional visit by the B772 on Turkmenistan's flights?

I know there are quite a few B752s stored around the World at the moment so it would be pretty easy to obtain additional frames if they so desired.

As I understood things, the Triple 7 would be used but BHX would be a transit stop either to or from New York. I've been reliably informed that they have only 2 working 757's at the moment (reasons unknown).

I did see that a 737-800 operated at least one flight to BHX last weekend (courtesy of FR24).

Turkmenistan were rumoured to be planning Toronto via Riga last I heard - a bit of a strange choice IMO and why they brought the 77L I'll never know - surely the 787 would have been a more logical choice? A good one for the spotters though, think they only fly them to Istanbul and Beijing.

Norwegian

I have just checked schedules on the DY website and BHX routes are still not bookable after the end of Oct. Out of interest I also looked at EDI-AGP, this route also only operates non stop until 24th Oct and not through the winter as reported, it is available and bookable by changing planes in OSL. There are indeed many connecting routes available like this ex EDI via Oslo and Stockholm, these are the only non stop DY routes from EDI this winter (so far!).

Checking the fare calendar for BCN, MAD and AGP from BHX through summer there are still some very soft fares available suggesting that sales have been moderate so far, perhaps they are seeing how things go before committing to a winter schedule. However, a normally very reliable poster on the DY forum has said that they expect a winter program to become available from BHX including AGP, TFS and LPA.

Chinapattern,

Re Turkmen 77L in BHX it had been said a while ago that at times it carries a lot of freight ,car tyres etc, so that might also be a reason.

2015 January International route figures

Monthly figures from the CAA, the average pax as ever by use of Libhomeradar and a BHX blog.

These are not too bad considering the month, obviously yields were light at times with flybe offering the Ł15 one way fares towards the end of the month on most routes.

Air India I knocked off a couple of rotations due cancellations so it should be more or less correct. KEF was good and I can't believe they offered may Ł15 fares on that route. TFS, ACE & FUE has the mix of IT & schedule wrong so I can't work them out.

Most of the soft pricing is outbound from BHX on a Monday, DY have always used low price on new routes as a marketing tool in part due to the high repeat customer % once they have used Norwegian.

I think that the obsession with next seasons routes is more Pprune driven at times than than customer driven and can be a double edged sword, get your route to market early and you pick up the people who know what they will be doing 6 months hence, but the same group tend to be canny shoppers and have time shop around between say EMA/BHX for the very best deals, go to market too early and you end up having to tweak schedules which can really upset people if they booked hotels/hire cars around your first release.

If DY are going to run a winter program from BHX i would expect it to go on sale no later than May/June

I think that you analysis is spot on - there is no reason to release scheduled routes ludicrously early, unless of course you're chasing cash flow - which despite the losses posted recently, there seem no evidence that Norwegian are. These days, most people can't see what's happening 6 weeks ahead, let alone 6 months!

EK First cabin

I know this has been covered before but was there ever an explanation from EK as to why the 3 class service was only from July till December and then reverting to the usual 777-300ER two class in 2016?
I can only presume that it was because they had a better use for the 3 class elsewhere-it cannot have been because of shortage of bookings as the announcement was not long ago.
In case anyone is confused-you can book F up to end of December but only J from January on EK41 & 42

Lack of 2 class 77Ws due to maintenance perhaps, so schedule a 3 class a/c and see if you can fill the seats? Testing the water?

Three things to consider re the front of the bus "EK"

A and 1 Early January is a heavy leisure travel time UK-Antipodes and back -Probably need those 427 seaters to meet demand.

B and 2 Those that travel anywhere in the bathchairs and up front tend to book very close to travel time and as business plans develop.

C and 3 Refer B and 2 full fare tickets and seats carry little to no financial benefit booking months in advance.

I'm not convinced it is due to maintenance etc because IIRC Emirates and BHX were boasting about the service being three class in their press releases

EK.

My understanding is that it was the lack of 2 class aircraft, so either delay the introduction of the flight or give 3 class a trail and start much earlier and switch later which seems to be what is happening.

Could of course be completely wrong.

Does anybody know what aircraft Thomson are planning to base in BHX this summer for short/midhaul flights.

I'm looking at a package with the family to Paphos on a Sun so not sure if planned to be 738 or 757 if planned to be 757 may swing me to book BHX to get another flight on one before they all get removed from the fleet.

I have been told that EMA will be all 738 base this summer so not what that will be.

Thomson

737James

Normally this type of question might end up with you incurring the wrath of some posters but in this instance I find it quite pertinent and not just because it is important to you but in the bigger picture it could affect the 2015 passenger figures in respect of what Thomson actually base.

The short answer to question is a 757 based on the booking engine and this quote: -

"We’ve introduced seats with extra leg room on our Thomson 757 short and mid-haul flights." This does not appear on all BHX flights and although Sunday has this against 4 flights all indications on other days is that BHX will again be 3 x 757, 2 x 738 and four 787 flights per week.

However I am not sure how reliable the booking engine is as if you check the timetable it is pathetic and has been for months and not up to Thomson's usually high standards. I know the BHX schedules have changed several times with many of the new destinations actually being accommodated by moving established services to Thomas Cook and Monarch in a far greater number than any year I can remember.

Emirates

I heard the same a Centre cities

easyjet

A tiny upgrade - The Thursday Geneva is now an A320 by the look of it although saying that an A319 turned up unexpectedly on the Grenoble today instead of the 320.

Brussels Airlines

Changes again with one flight retained as flybe from mid-May (three to four a day until then) SN2045/6 the rest are RJ100's but definitely only four daily and often around any school holiday just three a day. Tyrolean will not be seen or at least in the week they won't.

Centre cities,

Bang on, as Olton Pete also says, reason from several sources, lack of 2 class machines and also having to use 3 class can dip a toe in the water and test the 3 class market.
