Helvetic

Surely this was a given already given that no summer schedule has been released...or is it because there was positive press re: CWL yesterday so with the good comes the bad?!

It hasn’t come as a major shock that Helvetic Airways will not be returning to Cardiff Airport for Summer 2013 although we had been made aware of negotiations ongoing. We are pleased to hear that a return in 2014 hasn’t been ruled out yet.

Also the article has also failed to mention many other capacity increases by airlines and operators this Summer which should boost the passenger numbers into positive numbers for 2013 as a whole.

Thomson, Thomas Cook, Air Malta, Vueling, Flybe, Aer Lingus & Atlantic Holidays have added additional capacity at Cardiff Airport for Summer 2013 compared to the previous year. Meanwhile Lufthansa, Prima Reisen, Newmarket Holidays & Vueling have all added new destinations this year from Cardiff Airport.

TCX

Does anyone know when the Thomas Cook aircraft is due to arrive at CWL for the summer? And what tail number it will be?
Thanks

The first TCX flight isn't scheduled till May 1st to NBE with departure from CWL at 06:15. I imagine the TCX aircraft will position in a day or two before.

It will be an A321, but there is no way of telling which aircraft it will be till closer to the time.

St Athans to become SAR base

Opening in 2015, to replace Chivenor in North Devon.
I didn't even know this was on the cards, but good to see some more life there.
Am not sure about the privatisation of SAR, but that's a different argument!

Caernarfon will also become a base, replacing Valley (which will remain an RAF base)

Perhaps Prince William will apply to Bristows for a job! Him and Kate move into Barry, that'll bring a smile to a few faces!

WG's purchase of CWL is set to be completed by the end of next week, could even possibly be this week.

Also, a very big announcement is expected on the 25th April

Ryanair are seeking a large subsidy from the Government, knowing full well that the type of routes and market they will have at CWL will serve them very well during the Summer months. Very crafty, and in all honesty a poor deal for the airport and Wales in general.

Hopefully Ryanair will fly to Cardiff. Subsidising and seasonality issues aside, Ryanair are a highly known, profitable and fast growing company. The overall benefits of a Ryanair base in Cardiff is indescribable.

Passenger numbers would soar, Cardiff would attract more media attention and the airport would be more known across Europe. Also, with LCC's being virtually non-existant in Cardiff, only really domestic and holiday charter flights, there is no competition that Ryanair will wipe out. It's a win win for the airport and Wales in general.

With Ryanair's new agreement with Bristol Airport meaning there's now only two based aircraft since they get better value for off-peak slots (which can only be taken in large volume by using aircraft based elsewhere since based aircraft require early morning peak time slots), may be an insentive for Ryanair to open a less restricted timetable and base aircraft in Cardiff. It's all well and good now, but how long will Ryanair want to grow at Bristol by lots of aircraft based abroad in order to get the cheapest slots? Cardiff Airport should use this to their advantage!

I would actually put on record that "IF" Ryanair moved in to Cardiff then it would be very likely that Vueling would be gone within six months. Reason being is that Ryanair would instantly sell Alicante, Malaga, Girona & Palma which are the equivalent to those offered by Vueling.

One cannot disagree that Ryanair would bring passengers through the door initially however what we looking for is a long-term strategy and not a quick fix. If you take into consideration that the reason why the Ryanair issue has hit the press big time is due to them withdrawing three of their five aircraft from Bristol due to negotiations in charges. What people haven't got hold of is that Ryanair will be operating more flights to/from Bristol this year compared to last however most flights will be from non Bristol based aircraft.

Don't forget if Ryanair bully Vueling off the routes and then a year or two down the line want a better deal from the airport then decide to up and leave for the second time then we will be left in a worse situation. Because who would fill in the void.

Cardiff Airport in peak season this year will have the largest Vueling presence of all the UK airports they operate. Vueling are stressed that they are happy with the support proivded by Cardiff Airport and the wider aviation community. Vueling also extended their operating season, added an additional route, increased capacity late due to demand which equates to over 80% compared to 2012. Vueling also won an award in 2012 for best low cost airline along with three other awards. Passengers who have used them have said they are great and far superior to the Ryanair on board product. Also they don't try and grab every last penny of the passenger with their luggage etc.

I for one would prefer a far steadier long-term approach than a quick fix that is a high risk. In the mean time it's business as usual and don't forget "It's time to use Cardiff Airport" - WalesAirForum

I second that Mr Marsh ! Hopefully no FR@CWL then. The Vueling product is far superior to anything that FR can even hope of offering, yes the airport's passenger numbers would absolutely rocket, but as Mathers mentions, that would only be short term, as soon as any subsidy is stopped or fees increase, FR will be gone packing, leaving CWL in an even worse predicament in what it was in before finding Vueling.

In my opinion, Vueling only needs this Summer to realise that the Sun and spade routes really do work very well from CWL which could lead to a further enhanced presence for next year, and maybe some sort of Winter presence.

After a bit of thought, maybe this situation in its entirety can be used to CWL's advantage to try to get a VY base for next Summer, since CWL will not be able to sustain a new lo-co and Vueling, as any other lo-co will want at a bare minimum all the routes that Vueling currently operate. If the Welsh Government and indeed CWL management were to let FR base at CWL with say 2/3 aircraft, it would be the biggest mistake in quite honestly a long long time, as Vueling will more than likely be off packing, leaving A LOT of taxpayers money which has been spent on marketing the VY stuff go down the drain. We need to be patient and wait for VY to pick up even further at CWL.

The phrase 'taxpayers money' is getting used far too many a time in this thread, i don't like it. Afterall, isnt the government in the Uk as a whole trying to cut losses. Public sector cutbacks have hit Wales hard, and for that money to be re-invested in MOL's shambolic airline, i'd rather drink my own p*ss !

MOL will have the Welsh politicians on their knees jostling to polish his shoes just the minute he can be bothered to take the deal they will offer him to come. Politicians operate on time horizons that extend precisely no further than the next election date.

This much is predictable.
