I think an AGP base would run into union problems if it was operating services to Ireland. In the same way that LGW-based crews can't operate into Cork and Dublin, they would also be restricted. I guess flights into Belfast and Knock would be OK though.

I've always been a bit surprised that Ryanair and Easyjet haven't had more presence in places like Malaga and Faro. Ryanair have a base in Alicante, but AFAIK that's the only base either airline has in a traditional holiday area. Granted, you'd probably have to operate it with fewer aircraft in the Winter, with knock-on affects for staffing, but you could possibly get round that by having aircraft from those bases operating year round and bumping up capacity using aircraft from other bases in the summer.

840,

I had a look and Malaga has 21 departures today with EZY alone! Okay no base there but still quite a few departures/destinations from just 1 airline.

Ei Lgw Fao

I was at LGW this afternoon/evening. Aer Lingus were operating LGW FAO via DUB. Seems like an odd pattern.

Was this a mistake on the monitor? It was leaving from Gate 4 which suggests that it was not going directly to FAO???

It was nice to see 4 green tails at LGW at once... I was quite proud, and thought to myself I really hope that it succeeds financially.

Sorry, I'm new here. I don't understand that last post.
Does this mean that all flights to and from Gatwick and Faro will be operated by an a330 and go via Dublin?. Or was that just a once off?
I only want to know as I'm flying to FAO from LGW on Tuesday.

No the post means that an Airbus A330 operating from Dublin to Faro had technical problems when it had landed in Faro. The Gatwick - Faro flight (A320) stopped off at Dublin on route to pick up spare parts for the broken down aircraft so it could be fixed at Faro airport.

The Gatwick flight operates direct and this was an exception just to pick up the spare parts needed for the other flight. Therefore it was a rare one-off and your flight should operate direct!

Hope this clarifies things!

Lgw-nce-lgw

Don't understand what's happening here:

I booked seats at the launch of the route (back in mid Feb) to travel mid August. It was £0.00 outbd and £0.99 return.
Today (4+ months later) the same seats on the same date are still available at the same rate.

Does this mean that EI can't sell this route even on peak dates at any contribution to their costs, despite 4 months of touting and trying??

How the hell is this sustainable going into the Fall?

LGW to Cape Town and Hong Kong?

Did this rumour outline whether the flights would begin in Dublin, stop in Gatwick and then go onwards to Cape Town, Hong Kong etc. or would the flight only originate in Gatwick.

Remember Colm Barrington recently saying that no A330's would be based in Gatwick so either my first suggestion is true or they're gonna use different aircraft(which they haven';t ordered yet).

If suggestion 1 is true, it wouldn't be TOO bad - same plane, not worrying about missing your connection or the transfer of luggage going awry and possibly both locations on the Departures Board is definitely better than nothing. Non-stop would be better though and if these are served via A330's, why can't they go straight from Dublin?

Brian.

A330

It has been rumoured in Northern Ireland that the comment on no A330 based "outside Ireland" was a smoke screen to hide the move of an A330 to Belfast as depending on your political view is not out off the island of Ireland but is out of the Republic of Ireland but in the United Kingdom.

BFS-SNN-YYZ or BFS-YYZ HAVE been mentioned as possible routes as has BFS-DUB-SFB from some of my collegues in Aer Lingus

Toronto would seem an odd destination considering it isn't served from Dublin and is already served from Belfast.

If they were to move an aircraft up to Belfast, a more obvious choice might be Boston. It's not served from Belfast already, Aer Lingus have brand recognition in Boston and you might combine it with Shannon-Boston, which could do with the passengers, especially in Winter.

That sounds a bit mad to me... Dub and Belfast are only 1.5hrs drive apart or bus ride with aircoach. Why not LGW-DUB-wherever... That way you can have the A330 take the A320 LGW-DUB load if not full and pick up pax in DUB for onward travel subsequently... Just a suggested cost saver that would serve a larger population... I see Flyglobespan do similar via Belfast...

theres alot of people who dont want to drive for around 2 hours after returning from holiday (especially after a 6-8 hour flight)

any sort of time frame on the possible 330 at BFS? or is it still in the early rumor stages?

Given the current economic situation, and Aer Lingus's long haul cutbacks, I'd say longhaul from BFS is at least 2 to 3 years away if not longer.
