So while Ryanair might not have been the first low cost airline to serve the North, if it wasn't for them no low cost airline would be serving the North. No matter how much you hate Ryanair, you can't deny that if it wasn't for them, we'd still be being ripped off by high fare, full service carriers. Ryanair has forced other airlines to reduce their costs and their fares
I would say Britannia started one of the first 'low cost' models out of Northern Ireland in '1989' - while FR was still in nappies.

Ryanair leaving BHD is bad news all round & especially the employees concerned. Would have been an alternative for the BHD bmi boys to go when they get around to closing their base but you never know, they might extend the runway & MOL could be back. Looks doubtful though.

Britannia used to operate G-AWSY on that route a lot as I used to hear it on Servisair Belfast, mainly as I still needed it and it rarely appeared on the regular IT flights. Oddly enough Ryanair as we know it was born in 1994 when they bought six B737-200s from Britannia....

The original cheap fare from BHD had to be the lunchtime 'farecraacker' to LPL with Manx back in 86 - £25 o/w. Very popular with the ladies for some reason
Oh I here you say but FR flew for free.
Maybe they did but back in 86 you could pay with a credit card, check in 2 bags, chose your seat and arrive at the airport 15 minutes before departure and we'd try and get you on board cos we enjoyed our work and putting smiles on peoples faces. Oh and we were proud of the 'Harbour' in the local community.
To top it off you even got a cup of tea and biscuit on board.
What price progress?

Its very obvious as to why.

They were attracted by the men of Liverpool.

Doing a quick online calculation, I see the relative value of GBP£25 in 1986 is approximately GBP£74 now based on average earnings. That means I can currently get myself a BHD-LPL flight for £6, pay with credit card (£5), check-in 2 bags (£15+£35), opt for priority boarding (£4), buy a cup of tea (£3) and some biscuits (£1.50) and still save myself some cash over 1986! What the 'farecracker' to LPL with Manx didn't offer is the option to fly for £6 all in if I wanted to. Blame the modern world we live in for not being able to arrive 15mins before departure.

Cityjet at BHD

Nice to see EI-RJN pulling onto stand at BHD a few moments ago. Somehow looks much more suited to the airport than the 738 next to it : )

EI-BUD... guessing by the stand number, she was sub-ing for BE from/to EDI. Or maybe just trying out the facilities?

Meanwhile, on the "serious" rumours front, met a man coming the other way on the Sydenham Bridge early this morning. He mentioned something about Easyjet and a meeting at BHD yesterday, but his dog was having none of it.

FR- Based,

Calm down, calm down.

I know you're in shock at the loss of your loved one from BHD - can't be great being jilted like that although its been a short romance.

Rumour has it you weren't long enough or was it because you were overweight?

One minute your queuing at the freezing gate at 5.50am waiting to board your 6.30am love tractor and the next you find yourself sitting in a warm terminal being told you'll have to wait another 30 minutes before you get your chance to enter.

At least you had plenty of clothes on before as you waited as you were wearing those that didn't fit into hand luggage.

Ah well - every cloud and all that. Heard a rumour your next mount could be easy!

The society we live in today

At least there's a degree of certainty with easy, unlike Virgin.

I'm quite calm, I don't have pent up emotions regarding any airline. It's just that I like facts, not a fan of romance or sensationalism.

Posted on Easyjet thread - A319 to be based at BHD from 31/10 to operate LPL, BRS and Glasgow (in place of FRs PIK) - good news if true although wonder what the Flybe reaction to Glasgow will be - continue, reduce or walk away- would have thought STN would also have been included unless another operator for this is being considered.

Also imagine EMA would be worth replacing and perhaps PIK with an operator like Manx2.

If GLA gets easyJet, then I doubt Manx2 would even touch PIK. That would be from the IOM before anywhere anyway.

easyJet flights would be able to operate at full capacity also therefore not limiting profitability for the airline.

However if I am not mistaken the furthest destination to be served by A319 from the airport would be for example AMS or CDG?

I don't see how BHD would work for secondary cities such as LPL etc. alongside BFS flights? I can understand LON-BHD/BFS...

MUFC Fan.

LPL operates successfully from all three NI airports. The demand is most definitely there.

Cheers!

Sorry, I didn't mean to focus on LPL, I meant all the airports that were rumoured.

I just can't see easyJet operating from two separate airports in such a small city (on a European scale) that are only a small number of miles from each other.

FlyBE fly high frequency business routes with smaller aircraft for a reason from BHD...
