NCL - New York
I heard today from a senior source in the North East development agency that Continental are meeting in Newcastle within the next two weeks to rubber stamp a new route between Newcastle and New York (not sure which airport but I presume either Newark or La Guardia).
Seems an odd time to make such a decision given oil prices and the state of both UK and US economies.
Anyone else heard this or similar rumours?

Excellent! I would love an NYC service. I think it would be EWR thought. LGA has a distance restriction put on it, so it would be much easier to start up EWR.
Loads of places in the UK have a daily CO service - I've often wondered how come they haven't began flying to NCL already.

That's what I was thinking but the source is so well informed that there must be something in it. I can't give you a name though.
I guess with oil prices set to remain high for the foreseable future, if not forever, the airline indusrty has to continue and adapt so maybe this is one for the future - more point to point flights rather than hub to hub perhaps (i.e. Boeing's philosophy versus Airbus')?

If such a service goes ahead then it will be to Newark - CO's NYC hub. Most of you will remember that American had originally planned a NCL to JFK service but this was aborted.
On the positive side, CO provide more connectional opportunities at EWR than American do at JFK so are more likely to make the route a success. On the downside, economic conditions ( which forced AA to abandon their plans, if I'm not mistaken) have worsened and I understand that CO are about to announce route cutbacks.

Oil, economic crisis, CO grounding planes and furlonging pilots and AA just pulled STN-JFK, sorry cannot see this happening! Oil has to drop a lot in value before airlines will look at NCL-NYC!

I was told 3 months ago by my management that an airline was checking with EK over their load factors since starting at NCL 9 months ago. This airline was not named , but believed to be form the U.S. Again this was before oil went through the roof.

Monotonous topic, round and round, year after year. I wont even believe it when it's announced, not after the last lot! N registered 757 unloading on the apron and I'll believe it.

Although the source claims to be reliable, I too must agree with CentreFix. This has been discussed on many many many occasions on this and other forums for a number of years. Whilst it would be excellent for the regions economy and employment/business prospects, not to mention the travelling public, with the industry in its current situation I would very much doubt its truth (until a Gold and Navy Blue 757 is unloading on the apron and occupying check in space!). However, if an airline seems to think that such a route will be so lucrative and well utilised then stranger things have happened!?!!

Well, I suppose the story is always good for a few paragraphs so why not throw in the result of the Cork jury! How about CO EWR-NCL-ORK-EWR and on the next day EWR-ORK-NCL-EWR? Never mind a 757, I am sure a lot of us would even settle for an ETOPS 737-700 doing the job just as well!
Let us make even easier for ourselves and let Jet2 try it all together with a 757!
No harm in having dreams. The odd time they come true!

Have to take the same cynical stance as Ginga Worm as Lloyd Grossman would say 'now let's look at the evidence' :- source a probationary Ppruner without a single credit to his name!, just taken a ride in a taxi where the driver had spoken to his mate whose friend had recently driven the CEO of CO, who he did note also bore a striking resemblance to Elvis

I don't think you should worry too much about the price of oil. When petrol reached £1 a gallon there was uproar and all the analysts predicted the end of the world. It is now over £5 a gallon and people still drive gas guzzling 4x4s. Everyone copes and we all get used to the price changes eventually. It is the same with flying. In the very short term airlines will struggle and some will go to the wall but in the longer short and medium term we will cope and pay more for the same flights. We all like flying because it is faster and often the only practical way to holiday or do business. Even so it does hurt.
