Wycombe, when the temperature was above 27 on 26 the Cale Tristar had to wait on stand for it to drop! That was in the days that the UK had warm humid evenings.
One did ones laces up instead of watching a 'hot 1011' departure!
Cale operated later than 93, post 96 from memory? British Airtours based an L1011 at Luton during the winters in the early 1990's doing school ski flight charters.

....thought it was pre '96, but memory fades, maybe not....
Other thing I do remember well was sitting in the terminal, watching small wisps of smoke rise from the MLG during the turnaround!
Not to worry I told the wife, brakes probably a bit hot from the arrival!

Does anyone know, if the airport authorities have earmarked the old Silverjet terminal for any form of utilisation over the coming months, or is destined to become an oversized storage cupboard ?
I did a sim ride a few years ago on the BA A320 sim, the Captain was an ex BCAL Tristar Captain.
His method of take off was aim down the runway and close his eyes!
Buster might remember a Boeing 727 taking off once and hopping over the ILS aerial at the end.

LHR the same, friend on the ground at LHR trying to get up to MAN and they have nearly hour delay because of radar issues. I'm guessing the London TMA has gone dark!

Swanwick Area Control radar problems, as I understand it not affecting the London TMA directly, but traffic restricted to FL210 or less, chaos no doubt as flights cancel and attempt to fly lower subject to fuel burn.
The VR-CBQ 'donkey video' incident....yes I remember it well!
Ryanair have said today that they are to reduce the frequency of the Shannon route. Not too sure if this is new or old news?

Low-flying 727s
A Dan-Air 727 went through the ILS at the 08 end many years ago. It went on to divert at Gatwick.

While on the subject of near misses I seem to remember the case of the executive jet on approach to 26 in thick fog when Luton was only CAT1. The aircraft under shot the approach and took out some of the approach lights snapping off the lighting columns at the start of the approach lights. I guess this must have been in the 80's

With the reduction of RYR from Shannon, is REA winning the battle with the extra Galway rotation?
I remember the exec jet taking out the approach lights. It must have been late 80s. It was a Saudi registered Falcon 20, the ILS was out and it was doing a 2 mile SRA, which I did!
I got a strangled cry of going around and diverting to Heathrow, where it landed with no nose cone!

It was a Lockheed Jetstar, I've seen the photographs, taken at Heathrow, of the dent on top of the nose just in front of the co-pilots windscreen, yet it still managed to go around. Might have the photos somewhere . . . .
Edited to add: Maybe I am thinking of N267L which was the rwy 08 overrun.

I also think it was Saudi reg Falcon 20 which diverted to LHR. I remember seeing the aircraft damage. Wasn't it en-route Cyprus to Luton for maintenance with a generator problem?

As nice as it is, recalling old times, I suppose it shows the lack of any other real news, with regards to LTN. New flights announced by Transavia to Rotterdam, are probably the only "news worthy event" in many weeks. Pax figs have held up well, with regular month on month increases, but this will no doubt change, as we head towards winter, and various airlines cut back on route frequency etc, in relation to the current financial climate.

Thought I would take my first look at London City Airport yesterday. I travelled on the 10.07 East Midlands service from Luton Airport Parkway arriving at St Pancras at 10.30, a mere 23 minute journey.
It was then a short hop on the Northern Line to The Bank. I then discovered that part of the Docklands Light Railway was closed with a replacement bus service being used before catching the DLR further down the route. Total travel time from St Pancras to City Airport 92 minutes.
For me City Airport might be OK for Canny Wharf but for Central London I think Luton wins by a mile.

Luton favourite to lose Ryanair route
Irish bookmakers Paddy Power have opened a market on the next flight withdrawal by budget airline Ryanair, with Luton Airport installed as the early favourite. The market will be settled on the next hub that Ryanair cancel scheduled flights from, Online Betting Guide reports.
The favourite to be the scene of the next cancellation is Luton which is 4/1. Dublin and Edinburgh are next in the betting at 5/1 and Glasgow Prestwick and Stansted are both 6/1. Cork and Liverpool look fairly safe at 8/1, with Birmingham is 10/1 and Kerry is the outsider at 12/1.
