It was like old time this morning with the traffic jam into the airport extending all the way to the bottom of the hill. In fact as I crawled along in the opposite direction the queue was just about to interfere with the traffic on the A505 as I turned left at the roundabout, this was at 8:45.

It must be clear by now to airport management that the drop off area is not working and is probably causing more congestion than the old drop off area especially as this is winter

So now the good news, the new access road to and from the airport opened sometime today in both directions but only as a single lane. That’s where the good news ends. As I went down the hill, in the opposite direction going up the hill it was solid traffic from the Ibis roundabout all the way to the new traffic lights, which by the way are not switched on. The route from the Ibis into the airport was clear.

I decided to turn around at the temporary roundabout by the overhead signage and use the old route back to the roundabout at the bottom of the airport hill. The odd thing was that there was no traffic on this section of road at all. In fact some cars were coming at me on the wrong side of the road as they thought it was now a dual carriageway. I quickly came to the conclusion that much of the traffic that should have continued along the A505 was actually heading towards the airport in error due to poor signage.

Traffic chaos

At 7.45 this morning traffic was queued as far as the M1 spur. At 1500 this afternoon, I too noticed that most of the traffic heading away from the M1 was taking the route into the airport over the new bridge. Hardly surprising when you see the size of the temporary signs by the temporary roundabout explaining the new layout. What a shambles! Why is this whole project taking so long to finish?

There sure were holidays to the eastern block during "the cold war". The holidays were cheaper than the usual med destinations. Yugoslavia cir 1970 flew Dan Air Comet 4 to Dubrovnik, 1971 Bulgaria Varna (think) on a Channel Airways Comet 4. Remember the Channel airways aircraft couldn`t start the engines from the Bulgarian airport, and cabin crew went down the cabin switching on each emergency light in the ceiling, and main cabin lights went off. Engines still wouldn`t start so we went back to the terminal for hours whilst they did something. The GPU cables wouldn`t fit the Comet sockets I believe?

Thought I would quickly check out this thread again to see if anyone had commented on the new approach road. I wasn’t disappointed. I made the big mistake of using it this morning at 6am. The queue extended from the “improved drop off area that can’t be accessed all the way to the bottom of the hill.

I know for next time to use the old approach road that was empty so as least I get to the Ibis roundabout without having to queue.

I followed 5 cars past Capability Green from the M1 today. All 5 cars took the new airport link road over the bridge but 3 turned left to go back down the hill once they got to the Ibis. I think there is an issue with the temporary signage.

At 7.00am this morning cars were backed up right to the J10A M1 roundabout, in fact, the queue extended onto the J10A slip road itself.

Its a joke, until they swap the entrance / exit round in the drop off zone, the whole travelling public and those working / parking in the central area are going to be subjected to hours of misery - come on LLA sort it out. This is not even the summer - imagine it at 0530 on a Sat morning in the summer - hmmmmmm

December Traffic Figures

Well it had to happen sometime, monthly passnger figures have actually fallen for the first time for many a long while. November figures show that 629,418 passengers transited Luton in November - a drop of 8.1 per cent on 12 months ago, but the rolling 12 month figure of 10,235,994 is still up 3.6 per cent. Air Transport movements for the month also dropped by 10.5 per cent presumably by a large decrease in executive movements.

An 8.1 % drop is much lower than some other airports, Stansted remember was down 13.2%

Don't think the drop off zone can handle half the reduced amount let alone an increase.

I might be the only person who did not know this but Luton arrivals has migrated from analogue teletext to Freeview and I guess Sky. It can be found on page 448 on the BBC via the red button and contains 4 pages of arrivals.

It's the latest item on the airports news webpage but this is just sloppy.

London Luton

Foreword

London Luton Airport (LLA) continues to grow. The airport now carries over six million passengers......

....Paul Kehoe, Managing Director, LLAOL

eh didn't he leave the airport years ago.

The other PDF's are no better and go back years

The Surface Access Strategy Plan has been updated, but it is merely a document forced on airport operators by the Prescott anti-car brigade. There is nothing new in it, as far as I can see, not even the changes to the drop-off area, which seem designed to make car access all but impossible.
