Guided Busway one step nearer.......

From the BBC Website:

An £86m guided bus route spanning the Bedfordshire towns of Luton and Dunstable has received conditional approval from the government.
When finished the route will cover just over seven miles and stretch from Houghton Regis to Luton Airport.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton has confirmed funds of £78m towards the scheme and said Luton Borough Council could now tender for construction bids.
Work on the route, designed to ease congestion, is due to begin next year.
"The government is committed to investing in transport and to easing congestion in out towns and cities," Ms Winterton said.
"This scheme will bring considerable benefits for travellers within south Bedfordshire.
"The busway will connect Luton and Luton Parkway railway stations and Luton Airport. "This will improve public transport links and encourage greater integration between services, as well as facilitate the significant new development and regeneration which is going into the town."

£78 million for a guided busway! Must be purchasing the golden rail version!

There is/was a perfectly good railway line from Dunstable to Luton which should have been resurrected yonks ago.

£78 million for a bus system that uses a redundant railway line for most of its journey.

Where I used to live, the busway would have passed the bottom of my road, but I would have been unable to get on or off it there, instead it would have meant a 25 minute walk to to closest busway stop. I could have driven to Luton in that time. Needless to say, most folk living west of the M1 don't want it!

New Domestic Airline to fly from LTN...

On 3 Counties Radio this morning, so owner of a new airline has revealled he will be launching new domestc routes fron LTN to a number of "niche" destinations...

I was driving through an area of poor coverage, and did not make out all the details... I think the airline was going to be called Maxxie Jet, the name sounds familiar!

Has anyone else got any info?

Is this airline doomed before, even the first aircraft takes off, or am I being cynical?

Maxiejet

A quick google will bring up their website.

Take a look at their time tables, very nice hours for an employee's, don't know if it would be of any interest to passengers though! Beech 1900D - where are they coming from? Speeling not too good.

It's a joke website.

6 aircraft first leave Luton between 09:40 and 10:30 and all are back home again between 14:45 and 17:45 so not one service is any good for a day return

I can can imagine routes like LTN-BHX will go down like a storm!

I can just imagine someone taking an hour to get from Central London to Luton, then a minimum of half hour check-in and then the 45min flight to BHX and then still having to get to the Birmingham city centre...

Sounds like a no-brainer! I bet Virgin Trains are quaking in their boots with being able to compete with this service!

Sounds like the same kid doing his school project with Premjet.

"No fries with that" is the most likely conversation I'll be having with him....

Seating at luton

I feel I must reply to Ltnman's problem with seating at Luton. Surely the main purpose of the airport operator is not to get people to sit down at all but to get them spending money in the shops, restaurants etc. I passed through the airport last Wednesday the 27th August at 5.30 in the morning on my way to sunny Spain and the place was packed but I did not hear of anyone complaining. I grant you a lot of people were standing but watching the departure board waiting for the call to get to the gate as quickly as possible to get to the front of the queue to board an aircraft! There was no sign of a downturn on that particular morning but the crunch will come in late September and October for some airlines when the cash flow will not be as large as it has been over the last three months. As has been said anybody under the age of 38 do not remember a downturn in the economy but us old gits have seen many ups and downs (redundant four times personally) and it could not go on forever but in time things will improve again.

easyJet are hastening the departure of the last of the -700's, so Luton will become an Airbus base over the winter.

I see centralwings have pulled out of Lo-Co leaving Ryanair and Wizz to carve up that market for themselves.

A bit apotterish but hope nobody minds;

Recently we have been used to the 73s being LTN based with many of the same aircraft there from day to day.

How do EZY operate the 'bus- are they rotated around the bases or do they have nominal bases at which they largely remain.

Hello

I have been having a look at ZB´s Summer09 timetable and have spotted that they are not operating LTN-LEI during that season.
Any idea where that aircraft will be operating to instead?
I would really like to see ZB adding MJV to its LTN base now that LEI seems to be dropped.
We all at MJV thought that the LGW-MJV route would not work as EZY was operating even 2 flights a day on Saturdays, but it has been a complete success (217/220 pax on a 752 during the last 3 weeks), so why would ZB not be able to compete with RYR on a LTN-MJV route?

Why would Monarch wish to dilute one of their 'core' routes by adding Murcia? Alicante is not too far up the road.
