Good to see yet another new route from Wizz, the second this week. Can't help thinking though, that to start with a 4 x weekly is a bit optimistic. Maybe starting with a twice weekly, especially during the winter, and growing from there, would be a safer bet. I think LWO currently only handles about 200k annual pax.

Route starts 4 Jan 09.

Flying out today, through the fog, nice to see some Biz on the twenty stands again. Is this overflow from Harrods or Signature (anyone leasing them again) or were they just very busy with biz because of the weather in the South today?

Grrr

Corporate hospitality at Wembley could well have contributed a fair few?

You will prob find that they were some of Harrods aircraft, brainless ops people book in the bigger aircraft in at same time and never have room for aircraft on long stays so they are tucked away on the south stands.

So are you saying that “brainless ops” should say no to revenue when the airport can accommodate the aircraft?

I was at the airport yesterday so had a look at the work in progress to the CTA. First thing to note is that the footpath to the staff car park and the former easyland has been closed off with fencing that butts up to the kerb. No alternate route has been provided so everyone has to walk on the narrow road. It’s the same for anyone crossing the road at the roundabout after walking through the tunnel. After seeking sanctuary on the centre isle I found that I also had to walk in the road on the roundabout as there was no marked route to the drop off area or terminal.

The existing drop off area, which according to reports here, will be used just as a taxi rank and valet meet and greet area is getting 2 new entry barriers that run parallel to the drop off lanes.

The former disabled parking area in the short term car park has shallow narrow trenches dug out, that is clearly the route for the kerb stones. The gap between the lanes doesn’t seem that wide to me so looks like it will be for cars but I could be wrong.

So where’s the bus stops and national express area going to be?

There must be more to this upgrade than first meets the eyes as I can’t see what is going to cost £2 million even allowing for the remodelling of the roundabout.

I also noted that the taxi overflow waiting area now runs the full length of the service road besides the Silverjet terminal. The bottom line is that even though a terrorist safety zone has been created in the drop off area the towns taxis can park right up against the airside area of the terminal.

Nice to see you have such a high regard for ltn ops people Glenn!! Whatever..
So when Signature accept a A319, parking on stand 16, using the very underused south apron to park a few Large Gulfstreams to make way is not a good idea??? I'm sure it all gets paid for in the end by the customers!
I say good on them if they can accept these a/c be it signature or harrods which earn the airport less money per passenger, sure parking fees will come of it.
Accepting more a/c, providing a good service, maybe they'll come back to LTN again-good news.
Any new customers must be good news in these financial times..

It was rumoured back in June/July that the company "Canadian Affair" were interested in starting twice weekly Luton-Toronto for S09.

It was thought it would be Air Transat A310s or possibly Thomas Cook 757s operating the route.

If this has progressed further then it is a possibility.
From what I had heard this route was definately going ahead next year, but it seems things may have changed and Canadian Affair have advised me they have no intention of starting an LTN to Toronto service. If they do it will be advertised in their website!

I think I will booking their BHX service then for next summer!

Stand 19.

Last Wednesday flew LTN to Geneva. Used stand 19.

Even though it was neither particularly cold or hot, I thought what an inhospitable place to wait in that covered walkway at ground level. I'd not want to be there very long on a freezing morning with any kind of wind blowing and freezing you at foot level, nor at noon in high summer with sun blazing through that glass. We were in there something like 10 minutes from getting released through the gate to actually boarding -KF - and that was long enough at 06:20. Are any other Luton stands like that ? If so, I've not used one.

The story continues: got pickpocketed in arrivals hall at Geneva, various travel documents and plastic cards taken, fortuneately not passport, and left with enough cash to re-book flight and return later same day. -JU arrived at stand 19, so got a second change to look at it.

Sorry, I dont know the GATE numbers compared to STAND numbers to comment, Luton doesn't have a stand 19.
sounds like the stands 1-6 area to me.
At least it is covered if it's peeing down, think yourself lucky, i flew out of Shannon and had to walk about 200m outside to the a/c.

He means stand 61 or stand 19 if you view it upside down.

You should count youself lucky as that covered walkway is new. Before it was a walk in the open.

Luton - Budapest is gradually rising to the numbers of flights per week that it was back about 3 winters ago.

Errrr LOL maybe I got some numbering confused there - yep it was gate 6 we went through ... I'm sure it said 19 somewhere further out towards the aircraft ... can't think what I read upside down then (or is that a wind up) ... I'll pay attention next time

Easy flights to JER from LTN, no longer bookable after 4 Jan 09. They do seem to continue from LPL however.

September Passenger Figures

Just released passenger figures fo the month of September up 1.9% to 964,895 with rolling year figure of 10,276,464 up 5.1%. Air transport movements were up 4.8 per cent. Impressive figures especially with the demise of XL which operated a number of flights from the airport. How long can increases continue I wonder?

Construction work started in June 2006 so we are well into the third year of construction. Signage used to say that the work would take 18 months meaning that it would finish around December 2007. The latest opening date is December 2008 but I suspect it will be late January or even February before it fully opens. There are still 2 large sections where work has yet to begin on laying tarmac as the ground is still only partially graded.

The reason for the extra man power is that yet another date has been missed. The Gypsy Lane turn off for the retail park and airport station was meant to be closed for between 6 and 8 weeks. Tomorrow marks week 9 when the traffic will switch carriageways for a short section by Gypsy Lane.
ELC website now says the A505 upgrade will be finished and open in 2009.

Quite amazing that 20 miles of new carriageway (10 miles in each direction)on the M1 will be finished quicker than this 1 mile council project.

As I have often said, the boom in travel has been caused by the accessibility of cheap credit to the consumer. Now we are in the 'post Buster predicted era', my guess is that airports, well the smaller ones, might go bust!

Folk cannot borrow and hope that their re-mortgaging based upon inflated house prices will pay for the flat panel TV and copious holidays abroad!

Reality has arrived and the pain it will bring will mean that folk on this forum will lose their jobs and that is awful!

Hopefully, airports will be judged on their customer service and folk on here will not be bleating on about "my airport is bigger than yours"! Well apart from me laughing at the BAA and in particular, Stansted, going belly up! (debt, debt, debt)

Next year will be savage and only the fit airlines and airports will survive.

Now how can I get a $trillion loan to insulate my Bear Palace? Get a mortgage that I can never afford!

No so long ago, Luton shifted 2.5 million passengers. Somewhere over the next two years a sustainable equilibrium between 10m and 2.5 will be reached.
