Little acorns....

20 years ago MAN-DXB started out as a twice-weekly A310, via ZRH!!! Agreed though, that today EK would usually not go anywhere with less than a daily flight for starters

A little good news...perhaps

It was mentioned to me today that an airline operating out of BHX and EMA are looking to expand their operations and switch fleets to A319/20. It has got far enough for them to look at crewing. Has anyone else heard about this?

Elmdon International

Going back to the rebrand why did they not bring in the heritage element and rebrand as Birmingham Elmdon? On the subject of Elmdon has anyone been there lately? The place hasn't been rebranded since 1939 other than a disgrace! Rumour has it that the old terminal building is indeed heading for demolition once the new tower is up and running and that it isn't listed as commonly believed. Shame.

Isn't part of the old terminal build a listed building like the front of the old Excelsior or what ever it's called now?

It would be a shame to demolish it

Desperate Stuff!

The latest News on the BHX site refers to the appointment of a Brands Ambassador for the Asian Markets.
Sounds reasonable, but the news 'content' under the heading states (and I kid you not) ..............

'Birmingham Airport announce a new brand amdassador for Aisan markets.'

Is there good some news on the horizon?

At the risk of mixing metaphors, is there light at the end of the runway as regards direct services to India?

Last evening a Central news piece strongly suggested that a deal was in the process of being struck between Birmingham International and Air India through which direct services would be created to the sub-continent.

This suggestion does keep cropping up, is there more to this suggestion than any of the previous?

Any whispers...

@grundyhead.
Ahhhh, the innocence of it all! What happened??
I remember the day well....If only I knew then what I know now... It was certainly a decent place to work in those days. Surrounded by people who actually cared. Thanks for the link.

Well, if a news agancy is picking it up, maybe something is in the pipeline.

Maybe a BHX-DEL route as seen as they have stopped most direct flights from the Indian 'regions'.

A BHX-ATQ route is needed more, but even LHR-ATQ has been stopped, replaced by a ATQ-DEL-LHR route.

A380

When the A380 was on the drawing board, I remember former MD Brian Summers stating emphatically that he didn't envisage an aircraft of that size visiting BHX regularly. Perhaps a sad illustration of the lack of ambition of those times that handicaps the place today.

India/Thomson winter 2011/12/Armavia

India

Certainly an upbeat article but we will have to wait and see if it is more than
wishful thinking.

Thomson

It appears two routes lost, Hurghada and La Romana.

Hurghada is replaced by another new destination Marsa Alam

La Romana is replaced by Bridgetown on Sunday.

Another new destination in the drop down is Djerba but it appears not to be bookable yet.

Armavia is still bookable from 25/11.

I was in a meeting at which he stated categorically that "Low Cost airlines would not be welcome at BHX". He and the board were adamant that the BHX business plan did not include them.
Of course this was in the days when BA were pulling a lot of strings. Well they certainly delivered long term benefits!?? Not that BHX didn't make hay while the sun shone.

Call100

I recall that on the occasion of the QANTAS 747 first visit of type to BHX the then Airport Director (was it Bob Taylor or his predecessor?) saying words to the effect that "we won't be seeing 747s regularly at Birmingham".

It is amazing just how short sighted and unambitious some business leaders can be - and it isn't confined to aviation and airport management either!

Do you guys feel that a Plymouth-Birmingham service would work? Or would the trains win? I just never seen why this service has never been done, maybe due to the lack of demand?

Plymouth

WOWBOY

I remember the Brymon Twin Otters many years ago and loads were very
variable but my memory has failed me in respect of how long it lasted.

It is difficult to see it being viable as a stand-alone route but maybe
as a stop from Newcastle. However there will be a Newcastle - Newquay
via Cardiff and that would rule out Plymouth I would imagine.

One Terminal?

Just a quick question regarding the One Terminal works ongoing... don't know if anyone will know but worth a shot.

There are new frosted glass panels and metal barriers on the ground level of the Millenium Link building opposite the massive new Costa Coffee - to me they look like they could be part of a new merged Arrivals area for when the terminals are one. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Travelled through the new security checkpoint in its first week of operations, was through in 2 minutes, and it's a massive improvement over the old area. Much lighter and more airy and modern.

Well not quite right, it is stated BHX have offered Air India a deal .There is no suggestion that Air India are close to agreeing it .

We must remember World Airlines get invited to many airports (Sure AI have been invited to MAN as well recently) however it is good to see BHX management and Birmingham City Council are trying hard to secure such routes.
