I recall that on the occasion of the QANTAS 747 first visit of type to BHX the then Airport Director (was it Bob Taylor or his predecessor?) saying words to the effect that "we won't be seeing 747s regularly at Birmingham".
It is amazing just how short sighted and unambitious some business leaders can be - and it isn't confined to aviation and airport management either!
