4.5% pay rise

Obviously pleased to be getting our agreed 4.5% but PK's letter said the extra costs would have to be paid for in operating "efficiencies" and anyone got any ideas, clues, suggestions, inside info about what cuts and where are being planned or suggested. The implication of this letter was of significant cuts. Every business is tightening belts and redundancies and companies going into administration just a sign of hard times and unlikely these hard times not going to affect our company too.

Alluding to times being as hard ahead as the war years is gonna hurt somewhere - but where?

BHXRWY33

Your first post and you accuse me of 'cynical criticism of Call 100'.
Please read my post again - there is no criticism whatsoever of Call 100 and none was intended!
Although it's pretty obvious Call 100 works at BHX I have no idea what he does there although from your post you seem to indicate he has an involvement in the planning processes for the airport.

Call 100

Please see the above comment to BHXRWY33.
I'm not sure why he thinks I was criticising you personally, obviously I wasn't. Yes, my 'understanding of the planning process' is limited.
However I reckon many lay-persons with an interest in the success of Birmingham Airport get very frustrated at the snails pace of the process you refer to. A year for BHX to produce and submit the Planning Application, over a year for the Application to be decided by Solihull Council - except it wasn't which was somewhat disappointing.
Judging by the reaction of the CEO to the unwelcome 'carbon permits' revelation emanating from the Heathrow Third Runway permission, there is a faint, but real, possibilty that expansion of Regional Airports may be limited by the Government at some stage.
It would be somewhat unfortunate if one casualty of Government intervention turned out to be the runway extension at BHX because the planning process had not yet been fully completed.
As you have probably gathered, I am not a fan of Environmental priorities.
I am still getting over the shock of learning that the new International Pier will be heated using 'biomass' techniques, I had no idea the Airport produced so much rubbish, all those teabags and half eaten biscuits I suppose.

Alvechurch,
You obviously have little knowledge of the issues, and how the airport has delt with the planning process, both now and in the past.

As a company BIA have always worked with the local planning officers to ensure things are done correctly. The application, having watched the process several times in the past, seems to have gone through remarkably quickly and and smoothly. Because BIA don't go blundering around like a bull in a china shop, treat their neighbours with the contempt or flout planning regulations like some companies do, thank god.

The planning department has been through the process god knows how many times and do it better than many companies do. And with fewer staff than they have had in the past.
You really should get out more.

I don't claim knowledge of the issues, only the people directly involved have that information.
My concern centres entirely on the length of time the whole process is taking.
As you will be aware, the Airport was 'consulting' with the local community back in November 2005 about, amongst other things, extending the runway.
"Priority [will be] given to an extension to the main runway, which could be open before 2012."
This also was the definitive statement made by BHX in September 2007.
To the outsider, a process dragging on for three and a quarter years does seem to lack something in terms of urgency.
Certainly the chances of opening the runway extension by 2012 seem to be problematical now although you may know better.
You might not believe it but basically we're on the same side on this issue!
Alas my previous attempts at humour seem to have fallen on stony ground so I'll leave you with the reminder that the weather forecast for next week includes the possibility of snow so this time don't ........... hmm, better not.

The Planning Process

Problem is the UK's planning system, where it seams to take an eternity to get approval to build anything much more substantial than a garden shed.

Of course had BHX been in France, then the decision would have been made to build the extension, and the whole thing would have been bulldozed through, with little regard for the complaints / concerns of the NIMBY fraternity in the blink of an eye.

Then if BHX was in France they would have turned the present site into a housing estate decades ago and built a brand new, state of the art airport on a green field site and we wouldn't be worrying about extended runways in the 21st century.

Hi Phil
I think that the airport works pretty lean on the ground. Top heavy in some Management areas which may be sorted. I don't think there will be any large cuts in staff, if any.
There will be no other capital projects other than those already under way.
Budget cuts will mean some equipment will have to last a bit longer.
Of course the first cut was not giving the managers a pay rise this year. This would probably been the outcome for everyone if the TU had not made the agreements they had.
Next years pay talks will be lively no doubt.
We are in extraordinary times. I think PK is doing the right thing and trimming costs through choice rather than being forced to do it as the downturn hits.
We are in a stronger position than most. Lets not talk ourselves into a bad place.

Thanks Call100

That all makes sense - a number of departments are generously managed. We have been fortunate to have continued with passenger growth in harder times for other regional airports.

I doubt there is a large company in the land not looking closely at where costs can be cut - come to think of it - most households too! Certainly mine.

Its no bad reflection that BIA are doing the same - I was just, obviously , keen to know to what extent jobs might be under threat.

PIA/Diversions

Reports have it staying at three a week but the Sunday service
upgraded to the 77W.

Interesting last couple of days, 16 or 17 Ryanair in on Sunday night
including the based aircraft.

However still lost more than we gained, with yesterday afternoon
the downfall. It was a fine line as I am four miles west and the
snow was only moderate and had virtually stopped by 17.00. This
stopped a couple more BA heavies from getting due to the three hour
closure.

PIA/Snow

Apparently one reservations system is now showing the Saturday service restored from the start of the summer timetable and even more surprising
another 77W!

That sounds like a lot of capacity, one trusts that they are very happy
with the bhx service.

Unlucky again with the snow, no more than 5cm's, 4 miles west. FR & Baby cancelled all their first outbounds despite opening just after 9.30.

Ryanair summer 2009

One month after deciding to stay at four based aircraft
this summer, Ryanair have finally sorted their bhx based
aircraft timetable!!!

No room for new routes from based aircraft unless an existing
one gets the chop, as the schedule is now 100% full. FR have
gone for increasing existing services rather than new ones.

Increases are a Tuesday Reus (now 5), Wednesday Murcia
(now 4 a week), Saturday Marseille (now 3 a week) and a
as previously mentioned two Malaga's on a Saturday.

Sunday as expected sees Alicante change to an ALC
based aircraft plus other re-timings. Below is a rough
guide to schedule.

Monday

1) ALC/PRG/KTW
2) OLB/BLL/BZG
3) BLQ/REU/OPO
4) KRK/LDY/AGP

Plus visitors from HHN, NRN, SNN & 4 x DUB

Tuesday

1)PMI/PIS/REU
2)ALC/MJV/TRF
3)BIQ/BTS/GDN
4)NYO/LDY/AGP

Plus visitors from SNN, PSA, GRO & 3 X DUB

Wednesday

1) PGF/BLL/KTW
2) TRS/REU/RZE
3) KUN/LDY/AGP
4) KRK/PRG/MJV

Plus visitors from ALC, HHN, NRN, SNN & 3 x DUB

Thursday

1)PMI/LDY/PIS
2)ALC/MJV/TRF
3)BIQ/BTS/MRS
4)NYO/PRG/AGP

Plus visitors from SNN, GRO & 3 X DUB

Friday

1) ALC/LDY/OPO
2) OLB/PRG/AGP
3) BLQ/REU/KTW
4) KRK/GDN/BZG

Plus visitors from SNN, HHN, NRN & 4 X DUB

Saturday

1)PMI/AGP/LDY
2)ALC/MRS/TRF
3)BIQ/BTS/PIS
4)MJV/AGP/BLL

Plus visitors from SNN, NRN, PSA, GRO & 3 X DUB

Sunday
1) PGF/NYO/AGP
2) KTW/TRS/REU - Note in April TPS ops in place of KTW
3) RZE/LDY/KUN
4) KRK/PRG/MRS

Plus visitors from SNN, HHN, ALC, TPS & 4 X DUB

I assume the delay in getting this into the booking engine
was due to the sheer extent of the changes on some days?

Pete.
They put off extra aircraft until October because of the delay in delivery from Boeing after their troubles last year.

call100

Rumours on various other threads have eight aircraft still unplaced for summer 2009, including the two which will be removed from Shannon at the end of March.

The Bournemouth thread claims FR are trying strike a deal for an
extra aircraft (ex Shannon) for the end of March.

Surprised that BHX was not in the running for one of these ex SNN
aircraft.

Probably have been shocked at some of the bad winter loads but some
of the destinations chosen could have been better. However things have
picked up in the last week or so.

Boeing that old chesnut again, the old excuse that covers a multitude of lies and sins, it will be interesting to see if the above posted shedule operates. Think Shannon is likely to go for a start.

BHX is definately an airport where FR could base numerous planes and make plenty cash on the right routes. Some of the winter loads have been frustrating, not just at BHX but at other FR bases this may be something to do with the points I raised on the BOH thread

I think there is great potential for FR at BHX and i'm sure they know what they're doing ref the BHX base, whatever the real reason for no additional based aircraft this summer. It is however somewhat surprising that (according to rumour) FR have some 8 'spare' 737s still to find a base this summer and that BHX is not in the running for one of these...........

Turkish

I know this has kind of been covered before but the use of an A319 (the first time?) on yesterdays Istanbul flight seems to have caused a degree of mild panic. What exactly is the truth behind TK loads on its BHX flight? Some say it has got off to a good start, others (the majority it has to be said) seem to think it is doomed. It would be a great shame to lose such a route after only such a short time - a case of wildly over estimating actual demand?

Turkish loads again

Grim reading I am affraid

02 feb

21 in 44 out

03 feb

23 in 32 out

05 feb

20 in 69 out

08 feb

43 in 50 out

09 feb

20 in 87 out

10 feb

31 in 30 out

All in all bad loads again. Wish this airline would bite the bullet and go 3 a week now so the service remains, as on this slope it will be going the same way as airlines like Aerosvit, germanwings, alitalia, hapag lloyd etc out of bhx.

TK

Thanks Barry - grim indeed. I fail to see how these kind of loads can in any way be profitable in the long term, then again it does take time to build up a route and it is to a certain extent early days.

Three days a week I agree would be better on paper, but it would seem to me that this route was planned to attract mainly connecting traffic which seems to be failing to materialise. Is three days a week enough to maximise connectivity? I think the question is now: How long will TK give before bowing out? Sadly not long at this rate Lets hope things pick up
