The CEO of Air India is visiting BHX today, He's being flown up from London by Helicopter and being wined and dined courtesy of BHX. Perhaps something will come of it. You can't say they aren't trying....

Now that is the kind of thing you want to hear. Although there is little doubt that BHX is trying its hardest in respect of route development and that as a prospective traveller(and good for the region) is all you need to know.
It might be fair to say that in the past some questioned if that was happening especially when BA were present.
I will post the June route analysis soon and they are okay but I dare say yields were a bit soft in places due to the World Cup but certainly not all doom and gloom.

June Route Analysis
Source of the monthly passenger figures: CAA
Average pax per flight and load factor: A BHX Blog and my own records.
Right, no ash cloud problems so the only thing I do
not have to hand are flybe cancellations so some of
routes they are on could have higher load factors
Things to consider for June 2010, the World Cup, warm
UK weather and there were five Tuesdays & Wednesdays.
That last one can be quite significant as they are the weaker
days of any month. Another example how this distorts
would be Ryanair Porto - pax down this year but in fact
load factor increased 5% and there were 3 more pax
per flight.
Continental was showing one flight cancelled on the
bhx blog increasing their load factor. PIA cancelled two
Saturday services and one Tuesday plus swapped one
77W flight for a 772 making an excellent June load
factor of 79%.
I can't remember seeing so many load factors near 90%
in June, lets hope the airlines also got the desired
yields to match.

Thanks Pete.....
True about them not trying too hard in the past....To be fair they didn't need to try that hard as the money was flowing in. It's a different game now and they are starting from behind. I've no doubt that being the only major airport with planning for extension in place will see benefits over the coming months....
If not, I look forward to seeing all those new, expensive, route getters and marketers being sent back to whence they came....

MILAN MXP 3609 60 pax 56%
This is an odd one, bearing in mind both BHX and MAN are now down to one daily rotation, it seems scant to say the least!
OltonPete, no doubt you'll remember (like me) when BA operated a 1-11 daily on LIN - BHX - MAN (or was it MXP?). Not much has changed!

Hi jongeman
Yes I remember the 1-11 and indeed it was Linate.
BHX - LIN/MXP has always been a bit hit and miss pax wise although it was one of those routes where yields are supposed to be okay.
The June figure was quite good in fact I can't find anything similar
since 2008 when I think it was 145's.
I am surprised at Manchester just one daily with the figures they get.
BHX is even being cut even more, winter is showing 5 weekly Q400!

Air India CEO at BHX
Agree with you Olton Peter that 'that is the kind of thing we want to hear'.
If we are at the point when a substantial petition by the Midlands public in favour of a direct route to India has had some effect, then I would hope that BHX will issue some form of statement to explain what, if any, progress is being made on this front.
It would be wrong to curry (forgive the pun) the support of the public to support direct routes to the sub-continent and then leave them in the dark. The oxygen of publicity can be a valuable weapon...

BHX - MXP was operated by a Maersk 737 under the BA franchise. It operated twice a day Mon - Fri and once on Sat and Sun. It used to be busy in business class most of the time. The Italian CAA changed the operation from LIN to MXP.

Has BHX declared its annual report and accounts for 2009/10 yet?

Oh I love the rumour mill and it's is now in overdrive - so AI are now setting up a hub and SQ are due to grace BHX using a 330. Really? My hat is ready to proverbially eat

Flybe EMB175
Flybe plan to acquire the EMB175 aircraft (see the link below). Maybe BHX will get several of these?

HSR link
Is it just me that think this ? The airports determined and steadfast backing of the High speed rail link will just mean another alternative means to get to Heathrow to catch your intercontinental flight. It WON'T be the other way around. People will always fly from Heathrow , because that’s where the airlines fly from , they won't move to the region unless Heathrow is forced to close and the site developed . For goodness sake just look at the idiotic scramble to get into Heathrow when the bermuda 2 treaty was scrapped , and these were airlines that previously only operated 40 miles away (LGW) so there is no chance of them moving over 100 even if the pax could get to BHX from london quicker than it takes to get through the security check.

You are right, Some will obviously take the train south. However, with there being no expansion at LHR or any of the southern (Or anywhere) airports being allowed Some airlines will be looking for markets outside LHR. As it becomes more and more congested and the charges rise accordingly some will want to move.
That said, I don't think BHX is pinning anything on the HSRL. It won't be completed for at least 20 years if at all. They are just backing it because it's part of Birmingham and Birmingham want it.
