The area concerned handled 747s, 767s on a regular basis. Oh, and its only 3 ULDs max can be towed because thats the most you can safely get round the corners without mounting the curbs. Call 100 is closer to the mark!

Groundhog - you're spot on. If the people concerned spent the money on proper baggage facilities instead of trying to look like Merry Hill, then more people will have praise for the airport along with an efficiently run baggage service.. It was the same last August, we had to wait 1 hour for bags off the TK 737 Sat morning flight. The only other activity at the time was a departing Mahan Air 310.

When EK first used the 777 around 10 years ago, it was never like this. Baggage was offloaded and on the belt within 30 mins of arrival. Then there were a lot more movements on the apron compared to today, oh and a lot less shops as well.

Arrived on the lunchtime FRA yesterday, half an hour after the DXB. The queue for passport control was halfway down the new pier. When I finally got down the stairs, IRIS was out of action (as usual). I looked back up towards the pier and they had completely blocked all access to the lower hall as no more people could get into it.

Bag times

The rules at BHX say that you can only tow 6 at a time
Can I just clear up one thing. You can tow 3 trailers max each with 2 AKE bins total 6. So you are both kind of right.

When EK first used the 777 around 10 years ago, it was never like this
If there was always enough baggage handlers for every flight, and if you were allowed to just place the bags onto the belt, that would be great and bags would arrive faster. But on certian flights baggage has to be processed by UKBA. The baggage handlers can only go so fast. In an ideal world you would have more UKBA staff, more baggage handlers and bigger/more arrivals belts.

April Passenger Figures

Source CAA: 685631 + 27.2%

Rolling Year 8659838 -1.9

No real point to this but I have had a look when Easter
fell in the previous years and here are some figures.

2009 Easter Day 12/4 Pax 716965 ATM's 7701 (6773 in 2011)
2008 Easter Day 23/3 Pax 711942 ATM's 8192
2007 Easter Day 08/4 Pax 670219 ATM's 7923
2006 Easter Day 16/4 Pax 696892 ATM's 8311
2005 Easter Day 27/3 Pax 669428 ATM's 8996

pax figures from a BHX blog & Air Transport Movements from the CAA.

Notice the high 2008 figure compared to an early Easter. This would
be due to summer schedules starting earlier not like this year where
Baby started several flights on 8/9/10th April rather than 27/03.

On a separate note, the Skywings A320 has finally arrived just in case
anyone booked on it was worried.

The problem is that "everyone" doesn't want cheap seats.

The passengers that actually make money for the airlines, business passengers whether in front or behind the curtain want service - something which has been sadly lacking on the arrivals side at BHX for many years, not just post Ryanair.

10 years ago I was waiting for 40 minutes for bags to turn up off a less than full LH 737 from FRA. As far as I can see little has changed in that time. As a comparison, by the time you've got through immigration at Nürnberg, granted a somewhat less busy airport than BHX, your bags are already whizzing round the carousel.

HM Government (and the Daily Mail's) obsession with immigration has certainly made getting through the UKBA more of a ball-ache, and there's not much that can be done about that, but the farce that is baggage reclaim at BHX just goes on.

If all UK airports are as bad, then the UK needs to do something about it, unless we are, as the Pope's envoy has suggested, a third world country!

The new facility is the latest phase of a £100 million redevelopment
of the airport which includes the construction of a new International
Pier, a 3,365 space multi storey car park, Taxiway improvements
and an Air Traffic Control Tower due to be completed in 2013
Is this because of this?
Emirates on the piste in Brum
A plane diverted from London Heathrow due to the freezing weather conditions has partly come off the taxi-way at Birmingham Airport.

The Emirates aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, was carrying 282 passengers and landed routinely at 1354 GMT, Birmingham Airport said.

While proceeding to the terminal, it "inadvertently" taxied on to the grass, leaving a set of wheels stuck.

News of £100m worth of redevelopment incorporating the new int pier, car park etc was well before EK went off piste in the snow. Incorrect route taken by the diverted B777 A/C in the winter contributed to it leaving the tarmac. I'm told that the reference to taxiway improvements relates to the addition of Taxiway "Charlie"......

Invicta DC4 is sort of right though as BIA need to tweak some aspects of the taxiway infrastructure before regular A380 ops can commence.

Maybe one day eh?

There has been talk on the LDY thread that murmurs of Ryanair pulling the LDY route and operating EMA - LDY instead.

Bad news for both airports... as I think there's a bigger potential market between LDY-BHX than EMA.

Anyone heard anything of this at BHX?

The manpower has been halved in that time...... Admittedly the dated drop off area doesn't help.....

Eurojets/LDY/Skywings

Eurojet

At last some positive news.

fjencl

I have responded. It departed fairly well to schedule today on the HER.

NorthernCounties

Not heard anything at the BHX end but there again I never have once in respect of Ryanair. Hopefully flybe will consider it if FR do pull off the route. The flybe
winter schedule could probably accommodate a daily service if they thought it worthwhile.

BHX still has about 5 routes from last winter still not bookable.

I hope that the routes are reannounced, but it might be both in our interest if FR does move cause it might pave way for double daily flights between LDY and BHX because the market definitely is there. Fingers crossed for no stop in service between the airports anyway!

Runway Extension

Do the BHX management honestly believe that come 2014 the International Pier will be lined up with aircraft departing to Beijing, Honk Kong and Los Angeles when they don't even have flights to most of the main cities in Europe?

That sounds a little ambitious to have all those routes by 2014, but may do by 2024?
Once the extension is completed the door will be well and truly open for ANYONE who wants to fly those routes or any other long haul destination. 2014, 2024 or 2100? once its built its built. Its not just for pax flights either, freight operators may be interested too. Jaguar LR (India). MG (China).

As for the taxiway improvements, they were improved, widened and overlaid with tarmac some 2 to 3 years ago and has no resemblence to the EK incident.

Eurojet......

Reading there press release they intend to have there maintenance facility up and running by the end of the year. Are they going in to one of the Fly be Hangars to start with?

Seen No planning application go in? so surely there new facility is not going to be ready until the back end of 2012 at the earliest or does the airport have permission already to build a new hangar?

Any one know where they are going to build this hangar me thinks near or off the disused cross wind runway any one know different? And the wording < construction of a new > is used so this means to me they are not going to modify one of the existing hangars.

They normally have 2 x XLs and a 550 sitting there when they have no work for the aircraft so no much change there.

When Ryan air decided to expand at BHX (Before they decided to Welch on it all) There was a plan to build them a maintenance hangar on the Elmdon site where the old Mezies cargo shed (since demolished) sat. I imagine this area is still ripe for what Eurojet want.....Only a guess at the moment, but, as they said the Elmdon site was where they were going, that's the only viable place.
