Has Field Marshall Rommel started an artillery barrage before he threatens to order in heavy armour to remove a camo green Airbus from Cork under the cover of darkness? Hmm!

The Cork Airport Home Guard will be sent dashing to the front with the cooks ordered to put another Peking Duck on the spit to curry favour with whom, Her Fieldmarshall or Il Ducce de Mullingar?

So, will it be liberal amounts of Schnapps or Uisce Beatha the historically famous Refreshments Division will be doling out in the heat of battle!

I cling to the hope that Fine Gael will finally face down the DAA clowns (since it is a Feel'n Steal fiefdom) when they assume power, but I wonder will they be as impotent as they always were against that shower. Anyone have an opinion on this ?

TTT said "It is a damn shame that the Ethiad which sought a diversion to Cork during last winter was refused the request. "

Tom, can you please expand on your version of this event?

I heard they wanted to come to Cork but she ended up in snn. Whether that was on approach or when she was still further way I just dont know. It was a pity, it would have been a coup to see an Ethiad in Cork. The code share on RE to Dublin is good but not as good as the real thing. Still though, the KLM MD-11 made up for it not that there was great encouragement for it but at least KLM had other ideas.

Ethiad

At the time the wide body stand was restricted due to construction work. Shannon Airport was full of Dublin diversions but managed to handle the Ethiad 330. As far as I am aware there was never any question of it diverting to Cork but I'm open to correction.

Oh, well, if that was the case my remarks might be wrong - it was the way I heard the story at the time. With Dublin closed at the time things were a bit frenetic and there was much excitment with diversions going here, there and everywhere and there might have been some wish fulfillment in landing the big bird at Cork.

Looks I might be wrong and if so, Mea mor culpa.

Still, Cork should still be able to land something like an Ethiad about twice a week, in the summer if nothing else, via somewhere else if needs be. Down the years my big dream has always been the North Atlantic but when you are always up against the more favoured snn and never, ever getting a break it might be time to let it go and look elsewhere and Asia is a very, very big place and with the right background work Cork could at last succeed and nail a long haul route. Cork can forget any big Europe expansion which is so dependent on Aer Lingus and Ryanair has little interest in Cork and again favours snn and even Kerry. A Kerry flight to Hahn a few days a week and nothing from Europe to Cork on a year round basis.

Nah, I think it is time for Cork at look at Asia?

Some of the soccer crowd have a well used abbreviation, ABU, ie Anyone But United (Manchester?). Guess from now it will be ABC for us in Cork when it comes to alternates etc from other airports - Anywhere But Cork, even if that means diverting to an airport in a different State?

As usual Cork's rivals will be laughing away mad at us.

Today has been very lively at Cork with a good list of bizjet visitors. Missed all the drama myself as I was doing penance for my sin above as it looks like I got it wrong about the Ethiad coming to Cork.

Guess there is what may be regarded as a long haul flight from Cork tomorrow in the shape of a Jet 2 757 doing a flight to Tel Aviv. Hope the aeroplane assigned for the duty will have those lovely winglets. Just cant beat the 757. How long a flight is Cork - Tel Aviv? Just under 6 hours?

Now that the Jet 2 757 is above at Cork boarding for the long flight down to the eastern Mediterranean indulge me for just one moment in my long held fantasty and that instead of she flying out east she would be going out west over the North Atlantic on the equally long flight to New York.

If only.

Oh, well.

One day?

The 757 was a grand sight coming out over the city off runway 35 against a bright blue sky in the late afternoon sun. The noise from the RB211 engines was something else - a fairly high thrust setting must have been selected for the takeoff from the Cork runway. She looked mighty good.

Great to see such an intercontinental departure flight from Cork. God speed.

My friend's Mum was on this flight a year or two ago. Visited different sites in Israel like Eliat and Petra in Jordan. She was raving about the trip about how good it was. Some years ago LY themselves operated this short series with some of their 757s in their own colours. It was mad to see photos of their 757s on the ramp at Cork. Made the place look even more exotic than it all ready is! Last year IZ sent over a 757-300 for the duty and again it was a beautiful sunny day in September and she flew out off 35 also. It was brilliant.

I suppose there will be an attempt to poach away this little Cork gem now too?

How does the airport deal with the extra security arrangements for flights to Israel?

Best Western calls it entertainment - that's the thing about Cork. About three weeks ago She Who Must Be Obeyed and I went on holidays and we positioned out on the FR to STN from Cork to join our flight to Spain. We were both tired from work and were looking forward to our break. However, it was just a few seconds after take off from 17 flying into a beautifully clear evening sky looking down on the lower harbour, Carrigaline, Crosshaven and at east Cork along the coast and then just like before it happens - the emotion overwhelms you and you feel all ready how much you are going to miss the place even if it is only going to be for a week.

Later you land at different airports and as busy and as different as they all are none is as good as Cork!

It is just something else, Cork. So maddeningly frustrating but so endearing too in it's own crazy way!

The last TOM/FCA 757 of the season went off to Palma around 3 pm. Next year the same rotation is down to be operated by an Iberworld A320. It will be interesting to see how they get 228 pax plus babies on aboard when the time comes!

Oh, well.

Wizzair and Cork

Great news about Wizz and Wroclaw, that's five Polish Cities linked by them to Cork.

I wonder could the CAA tempt them to operate to Prague and/or Budapest. Both routes produced the numbers for Malev and CSA.

Only problem is that they would be dependent on support from the Irish market and their brand name isn't recognisable among those who never search for flights outside the Ryanair and Aerlingus websites.

I'm still sticking to my prediction of a new Central European route for Cork next year.

It isn't Wroclaw and the operator isn't Wiz
