Ryanair

The fact that Ryanair has lost money in each of the 5 years at Shannon tells its own story. Even with massive discounts it can't break even. The scale of the operation there was way too ambitious.

I can't see the DAA allowing Shannon giving them a 50% discount on what were already very low charges. Shannon has incurred huge losses over the same period. So every one loses when deals are signed that are not sustainable and are only agreed to artificially boost numbers.

Sounds to me as if Ryanair are preparing an exit strategy and interestingly even if they get what they want they're only promisng to deliver 1.2 million pax per annum as distinct from the 2 million promised at the time of the first deal.

Looks as if Cork Carcassonne will operate for July and August next year having operated from June to mid September in 2008 and 2009.

I'm delighted they lost money. O'Leary tried to beat Cork Airport with the stick of drawing capacity away and he ended up beating himself. Couldn't happened to a nicer guy

I think the SNN basing on this thread has become a bit much, tbh.

There are many people who's livelihood depends on the continued existence of the airport. SNN needs to make major changes, FR were brought aboard to smooth the transition from Aer Rianta to an independent SAA, this never happened, there is no longer any pressure on government to hand out sweeteners to attract airlines into SNN. FR is a poison chalice, yes they deliver passenger growth, but they destroy any semblance of competition and at SNN every single passenger they bring through costs the SAA money.

ORK is currently doing it's own thing. The new flights to Warclow and EMA and increases on UK flights by EI should ensure 2010 is a better year for Cork than 2009 was. Cork needs to keep promoting, getting it's message out there and talking to airlines, new and old. ORK needs to do it's own thing, let SNN look itself.

Brian.

SNN

All airports have employees whose livlihoods depend on their continued existence. The problem at Shannon is that they put passenger growth ahead of everything else including common sense.

Cork has had numerous suspect offers over the years to grow traffic including the daft proposal to re open the old terminal but has reacted more cautiously. Paying airlines to use airports is a highly questionable strategy.

It now has 7 airlines competing for business although Ryanair and Aerlingus are the dominant carriers.

Everyone knows Shannon has been protected for narrow political considerations for many decades.

If they operated to a commercial mandate they would probably make a profit and generate between 1.5 and 2 million terminal pax per year as well as holding most of their transit business.

The scale of the Ryanair operation and the Aerlingus transatlantic operation are unsustainable. Ryanair got a very generous 5 year deal in 2005. What do they do after 5 years? Ask for a 50% reduction. It would be funny if it wern't so serious.

Cork update

Cork traffic is down by around 15% for 2009.

No there are no immediate plans to extend the runway but there is talk of a 1,000ft extension at the 17 end which will allow operations to destinations as far away as Florida or Chicago if the demand is ever there for such a service.

In my view it will take a return to the halcyon days of the Celtic Tiger and an aggressive marketing strategy in ALL of Munster and south Leinster for Cork to ever become a serious player in the long haul game.

I would much prefer Cork to concentrate on getting its European destinations back up, as appealing as the long haul would be. I long for the day when we could have a regular SW France flight from Cork.

....to which destination?

Bordeaux, Toulouse, Biarritz, or Perpignan?

I wonder which, if any, would be viable year round ex - Cork.

In the present climate, sadly, few.

In the current climate, there just isn't enough demand in the winter to support a route to South Western France. Even from Dublin, Carcassonne is the only route I can think of that operates all year round, everything else is seasonal. We currently have summer only services from Cork to La Rochelle and Carcassonne. I think thats the best we can hope for to South West France until the economy improves.

I have heard a rumor again today about a seasonal ferry service from Spain to Cork next year. The port being mentioned is Santander. Dont know if it will start but if it is it would need to be announced some time soon for early bookings for next year. Then again, the economy is hardly in the right state for such a ambitious project. Look at the effort that has gone into getting the Cork Swansea service going again for next year!

Have always had a bit of a curiousity whether a seasonal air route between Cork and Bilbao would work. Down the years most of the Spanish teenagers that arrived in Cork for language exchange programmes have come from the Basque Country and it is something that I have always felt would work for about eight weeks in the summer given half a chance.

Has Cork to Munich been cancelled for the Summer schedule 2010 or has it just not been loaded?
