I think the largest problem the plane has now is frequency rather than point to point time.
Obviously, the car allows you complete freedom in terms of when you come and go and now that there's an hourly train service, that's not far behind. On the other hand, flying means you have to plan around the flight schedule.
In a way, the type of competition faced makes it more appropriate for a frequent service in a smaller aircraft i.e. what Aer Arann used to offer.
The irony is that Aer Arann could compete with land transport, but not Ryanair, while Ryanair could compete with Aer Arann, but struggle against land transport.
Flying still makes sense for connecting flights and offers some attraction if your destination if Malahide, Swords, Santry etc., but not for general travel to Dublin. Considering that connecting flights is probably the largest potential market, it's a pity that it's not available through Ryanair.

With the termination of the PSO routes to most of the regional airports, Aer Arann/Aer Lingus Regional should reinstate the Dublin-Cork flights allowing connections not just to transatlantic flights but to other destinations not available from Cork and to destinations already available from Cork to complement the existing Cork schedule. These interline services would facilitate the business traveler which Ryanair Cork-Dublin services doesn't really cater for. Otherwise interline businesss travelers will continue to travel to/from Cork via London and Amsterdam.

Would like to see ORK-NQY-EXT. Think the route would be a bit thin with just NQY. EXT will bring the additional passengers and revenue. Don't think BE are interested in the route from EXT to ORK.

You're absolutely right. I don't believe the route can sustain 189 seats x 2 every day. What would be better (for passenger convenience and sustainability) is an ATR42/72 on morning, lunch and evening flights. Hmm, who could have such a machine...?

Something Big?
Two FR reps in ORK today, i've heard there eyeing MAN and looking at starting the Summer routes in March next year plus a few new European destinations that have to be confirmed. EI just seem to want to base the 4 a/c next Summer and increase flights to existing Destinations although i've heard a new route for Summer 2012 by EI will be announced soon. As for EI Regional im thinking expansion next year also? there's going to be quite a few spare a/c and they have orders for 4 more ATR 72 from Jan 12. Also a new airline and route will be announced soon.

No offence but you're just recycling the stale rumours that have been circulating here for a while. To be honest it is more likely I'll win the lotto than what you foresee...

If Ryanair didn't come in on MAN, I wouldn't be too shocked to see an extra EI Regional aircraft.
EDI in particular and to a lesser extent MAN could take extra rotations. And there is a market for Cardiff from Cork, even if only 3 or 4 times a week.
There's also a gap opened in the South-West of England, although it would be hard to know where to serve. Newquay may be too thin; Exeter may be a bit close to Bristol. Maybe more rotations to Bristol could be in order.
However...
Some extra capacity could be created by not flying Ws to Shannon, so either allocating an aircraft to Shannon or allocating it to Dublin and flying Ws from there may also be options for Aer Arann.
Also, it remains to be seen what effect the Shannon incident will have. Will the aircraft in question ever fly again and what will the effect be on Aer Arann's finances?

I doubt they'd offer anywhere that wasn't available as either a Regional or Mainline route from Dublin. Otherwise there are other potential routes that could come into play - Leeds/Bradford, East Midlands.
One thing I didn't say in my post. I'd they added an extra aircraft, I wouldn't be shocked if they restarted a service to Dublin.

On Monday im heading to London Stansted with FR and coming back Tuesday on the new extra midday STN-ORK flight, and to my astonishment there seems to be less then 20 seats left out of a total of 567 seats available on Tuesday.
