I think the largest problem the plane has now is frequency rather than point to point time.

Obviously, the car allows you complete freedom in terms of when you come and go and now that there's an hourly train service, that's not far behind. On the other hand, flying means you have to plan around the flight schedule.

In a way, the type of competition faced makes it more appropriate for a frequent service in a smaller aircraft i.e. what Aer Arann used to offer.

The irony is that Aer Arann could compete with land transport, but not Ryanair, while Ryanair could compete with Aer Arann, but struggle against land transport.

Flying still makes sense for connecting flights and offers some attraction if your destination if Malahide, Swords, Santry etc., but not for general travel to Dublin. Considering that connecting flights is probably the largest potential market, it's a pity that it's not available through Ryanair.
