Taken from BOH airport website:

Bournemouth Airport wins top travel award.

Bournemouth Airport was voted the ‘third best airport in the world’ in this week’s Daily Telegraph Travel Awards.

More than 25,000 readers of the Daily Telegraph were recently polled in Britain's biggest survey of travel habits and in the 'best airport' category Singapore-Changi came first, Hong Kong second and Bournemouth third.

The awards were announced on Tuesday evening (25th November 2008).

Commenting on the airport’s success, Managing Director Rob Goldsmith said: “I believe this really does demonstrate the important role for regional airports in providing their communities with a convenient, fast and friendly service. This is an incredible result. Everyone connected with the airport is to be congratulated and can be proud of this achievement.”

worlds third best airline (Palmair) operating from the worlds 3rd best airport is now operating Jet2 aircraft in light of European going into administration.

lots of work now available for charter airline operators from BOH for Palmair, ski flights, Austrian/Italian getaways and Olympic holidays in 2009

Somebody was obviously having a laugh when making BOH 3rd

Maybe 3rd from bottom would have been more appropraite. The place is a disaster and was even prior to works commencing. I wonder what the qualifying criteria was ?

Agreed, don’t want to be disparaging but Bournemouth is a shocker of an airport.

Utter b*llocks. Any airport these days were you can arrive at check-in and be on the aircraft within 30 minutes (or less) has a lot of positives!!

Any airport that uses a portokabin as an arrivals waiting area and provides dirty plastic chairs bought from a bankrupt engineering company's canteen as public seating and doesn't bother cleaning them puts them at the top of my list of airports not to go back to.

On my last visit cars were parked in a gravel car park completely surrounded by water with no way of getting to them without getting wet feet.

hahahaha

these are all valid comments.

but lets not forget the airport is under-going a $45m redevelopment so hopefully that means an end to the plastic props and the puddles.

convenience and ease of use though surely is a good point puddles an all?

I think it is you who is talking bollocks. Have you ever been there in the early morning? The last time I was there it took at least 30 minutes to get through security! I was then forced to remove my shoes and walk on a filthy carpet. I had purchased priority boarding but was one of the last to board.

As minimum check in times are 40mins prior to flight you can't possibly do it in 30 mins.

The good points : Convenient

The bad points all prior to works and still there :

Long security queues
Obnoxious security staff (read the threads on prune)
Only 1 walk through security post usually in working order
Inadequate expensive parking
Greasy spoon serving shocking food (could hardly call it a restaurant)
consistently leaking roof in terminal, don't trip over the buckets !
a/c doesn't work properly in terminal in the summer when it's really needed
WWII arrivals area consisting of portacabins
filthy airside areas incl the greasy spoon

need i go on !

It's a complete and utter farce that it was apparently voted 3rd !

I wouldn't take it too seriously.
It's the same bunch of loyal Telegraph reading, blue rinsed, Palmair flying passengers that are generating these less than scientific results.... it wouldn't surprise me if half of the UK Telegraph reading population lived in the BOH catchment area!

A survey by a UK based newspaper with a narrow demographic cross section of readers is only ever going to generate a survey worthy of casual curiosity to be taken with a liberal dose of salt.

Pitty the Sun don't give out travel awards - we could have Ryanair and Luton in top positions

Well, I don't know why the security staff always get it in the neck, on here. I fly through the airport once a month and have always had a good experience. Yes you have to remove your shoes, big deal! It's busy, but things are generally flowing, I've never waited longer than 10 minutes and I'm going through at peak hours (7 till 8 a.m.).

It will be great when the new terminal is built, having said that, I would still rather fly from BOH than one of the London airports.

Yep things can only get better but saying that I can remember when Blackpool's new terminal opened a few years back, which replaced a wooden terminal.

Their new terminal was an economy version with bare breezeblock walls which even now still look like they are waiting for someone to plaster and paint them. Oh I nearly forgot, the other half of the terminal is a tent. I kid you not.

Chinese whispers

Be careful what you say BOH is listening.. It's not too late for a planning change!! Don't go giving ideas to the bosses or they could be off to to the local surplus stores for a large canvas sheet.. I kid you not.And for those who don't like getting their feet wet..pack some wellies, not just for the car park but inside the terminal on a wet winters day ha ha.AND YES STOP GIVING THE SECURITY SECTION A HARD TIME, they work within a confined area and with equipment provided by the airport so if there are long delays have a moan at the airport bosses just for a change!!l

Looks as though the demise of EAC has resulted in the loss of the Olympic charters for summer 2009 that used the old 737-200's. At the moment they've been removed from the booking engine.

Any news on when Ryanair will make an anouncement about the new routes? Must be soon if they are to start in February.

Cheers

Yes you can. Boarding starts quite a bit before departure time. So if you check in at the last minute most of the queue is already through security, you arrive at the gate and boarding has already started. If there is a large queue at security you mention that your flight is already boarding and you get whisked to the front.

Good news is that Olympic Holidays will be operating from Bournemouth to both Zante and Corfu again next year after this years sell out , they are in the process of securing a new airline to operate the routes and expect to have them on sale again in January

It could well be the Palmair aircraft operating the route as there are a couple of days when there aircraft has down time namely on a Saturday and Tuesday afternoon , fingers crossed

...unfortunately (and unless there are any further changes to the program of whoever ends up operating the Palmair program next summer) given the present available time I don't think this is very likely: Olympic operate all their CFU flights on the 'standard' UK market days of Monday and Friday and their ZTH flights mostly on Thursdays (with some allocations taken Sundays).

Sadly, as such, the current available time doesn't really work for them..

Flyglobespan to rescue

Perfect fit - B736 (Flyglobespan stored B737-600 to be used at BOH)

Palmair have secured a B737-600 for exclusive use from Bournemouth from Jan/Feb 2009. It will be painted in PALMAIR colours and damp-leased (using Flyglobespan pilots relocated to Bournemouth from Scotland).

Currently the aircraft is fitted with 131 seats. 6 seats may be removed for the Palmair configuration of 125 (1 more than the EAC B737-200), This is a sensible solution as it doesn't grow capacity from the airport at a time when charter airlines are consolidating. It wil also drink far LESS fuel than the B737-200 so will offer Palmair more profitability. Palmair cabin crew will be re-instated. Aircraft will have leather seats.
