Ryanair Winter 09/10 at BOH

Hi,

I know it's early and the winter schedule has only just been released, but at the moment, Ryanair's winter 09/10 capacity at Bournemouth looks as though it will be down by almost 50% compared to the winter of 08/09.

The flights loaded are:
ALC 3 per week (operated by ALC aircraft), frequency unchanged vs last yr
DUB 4 per week (-3 vs last yr)
EDI 7 per week (-6 vs last yr), 3 of which are flown by an EDI aircraft
GRO 4 per week (-3 vs last yr)
PIK 7 per week (-7 vs last yr: cut to 1 per day in Jan)
AGP 3 per week (-1 vs last yr)
MJV 3 per week (-1 vs last yr)
These will keep 1 aircraft fully occupied.

Other routes missing from last winter are:
WRO 0 per week (-2 vs last yr)
BVA 0 per week (-3 vs last yr)
BGY 0 per week (-3 vs last yr)
TRN 0 per week (-1 vs last yr), although as ski routes, these last 2 could go on sale later?

PSA, PMI, LIG, REU, MRS and CCF all appear to be summer only (not a great surprise).

I reckon that makes a total of 31 departures per week currently for sale, down from a total of about 60 departures per week last winter.

Are all bases out?

If not then there maybe some from other bases which are listed.

Ryanair winter 09/10

Its very early days to draw any conclusions for winter schedules from BOH or elsewhere.

More to come for sure, and would'nt be a surprise to see BOH-TFS, several times a week this winter as well as a strong Ski showing.

Long shots from BOH are Morocco, Italy (Rome and Naples area) and maybe even Cyprus, watch out Thomson and Palmair. Ryanair have a lot of capacity to fill, and will go after established winter sun markets.

The Polish market is not dead from BOH either, although it has gone from 3 routes and three operators 18 months ago to nil. From too much down to too little.

Yes this is interesting.

Flitefone - totally agree with your opinion.

Ryanair would be rather stupid to not do routes like TFS, MLA, PFO, SZG etc from BOH in the winter months - definitely money to be had there.

Lets hope Palmair have more surprises up their sleeve to combat any potential Ryanair onslaught on medium length routes from BOH. Although i do believe there is a separate market that Palmair seem to be tapping into nicely.

Ryanair/Palmair

Interesting to see the impact of competition at BOH. Ryanair is certainly good for the airport and will push Palmair and TFly (or whatever they are called now) from the volume markets simply by virtue of the lower per seat operating costs.

But there is a market from BOH for the more exotic longer haul - Turkey, Egypt, Red Sea Israel, Gambia etc. Which Ryr will be unlikely to chase near term and...

There is also a market for a full service offering, more leg room, frills included, which is the old Palmair staple. Look at the number of cruise charters used by pax choosing to avoid LHR/LGW.

So I expect to see Palmair moving more exotic and perhaps a little up market, to a niche that steers clear of Ryr territory, and meanwhile Tfly will focus on the longer charter routes eastern med etc.

In the end the airport and the consumers win..

It's moving along nicely, things are "popping up" behind the terminal where the kitchen used to be. The new frontage should be ready for June, methinks.
Once the new terminal is built or is near completion a few other airlines will consider Bournemouth as a option. Things are certainly looking bright there...but only time will tell.

Would Air Southwest be a contender at all? There are some routes that could sustain their services once the economy picks up, like Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast, Jersey, Guernsey.

Bournemouth had a massive 26% decline in passengers during April 09 compared to last April. Even more concerning when you realize Easter occurred in this month compared to last year. Most other UK airports were showing a slow down in their declines, but this is the biggest drop at BOH since the recession started.

BOH pax in April

It looks like the main reason for the decline in passengers was the reduction in flights by TOM (down from an average of 7.8 movements per day in April 2008 to just 2.7 per day this year). There's also the loss of the Wizz flights that were operating last April and only half as many Easyjet flights.

For Ryanair, there was a small increase in the number of flights (now an average of 15 movements per day, up from 14, although this looks as though it will take a hammering this winter).

REU and LIG both got off to very weak starts for FR and will surely need to improve fast. EDI and PIK are still flying only half full, despite the cuts to 1 return flight on each per day.

On the plus side, loads on AGP, ALC and GRO for FR all look pretty decent.

FR need to get their Scottish flights moved to mid morning/ mid afternoon slots, otherwise they will never carry the passengers that they once did.

It's no surprise LIG and REU are weak.

Why isn't Ryanair going after the low hanging fruit at BOH which is still to be exploited? Berlin, Rome, Malta, Tenerife, Bergerac, Salzburg, Stockholm, Belfast

These routes would be far more rewarding and fatter in terms of volumes.

Plus easyJet are yet to exploit Amsterdam, Nice etc

and Air Southwest yet to take advantage of Manchester, Jersey, Guernsey, Paris etc
