A fence may not deter the really determined but it would prevent opportunism if the airport is seen as a soft target. Put another way - when you leave your house it is unlikely that your house will be broken into but you still shut & lock the front door!

Because it costs me nothing to do that. I could also erect a 9ft fence with razor wire around the perimeter of my property, but I don't, because I judge it's not cost effective...

A 9 ft fence might not deter a protester but a 100ft wide reed bed to wade through as well as the Moors River to cross probably would, because that is what you would have to negotiate to get on to the airport from the broken wire fences the so called expert on TV was looking at.

Quite correct, the reed bed and river can sometimes even keep out the work force on the North East entrance off matchams road, but digging a moat all around the airport?
But on a serious note if your talking about passenger safety then the passenger teminal is sited on the South east corner which is very secure. Perimiter fencing in this area is up to the standard as directed by Department for transport. Anyone can wonder over to the north east/west sites where non aviation companies exist and security and it's associated costs draw a blank expression.

Palmair

Congratulations to Palmair!

Seconded, they cater for families excellently and BOH is 300 times better than the charisma vacuum that is Gatwick.

Good luck to Palmair, years ago they saw a niche in the market and filled it admirably, today that niche still exists. There are more than enough people in the local area who feel their holiday starts from BOH and wish to have a pleasant experience throughout their vacation. Some people do not relish the idea of starting off on the cheapest flight they can find and then fending for themselves when overseas. They have the budget to be looked after from departure lounge to arrival back home and that's exactly what Palmair do best. Palmair do not wish to compete nor even be judged up against the likes of Ryanair/Easy or any of the others for that matter, they are quite satisfied doing what they do best as are their passengers..Who at the end of the day are the ones who ultimately keep them in business.

Three cheers for Palmair

Yankee,

I am a young Granddad in my 40's and yes my opinions do change as I get older. As does the travel/airline industry .

Currently a cheap 2 hour flight ( Last weeks RYR trip to Pisa was £38 all in, inc taxes ) is a means to an end to me. I then spend my extra cash saved on a nice luxury hotel, good wine and gorgeous women. All just a click away in the ether of t'internet....not the women obviously...but I guess you could double click for one of them also if you so desired ?

I personally prefer the "ello darling whatcha drinking" approach to life at mo .

I don't need/want water, beer, pizza, sandwich, lotto tickets, bus tickets etc ala Pikey/Greasyjet, nor do I need an in-flight meal of tasteless chicken and a free in flight drink of cheap plonk and earl grey tea ala Palmair. I just need a seat you see, cos I'm very content to just sit and read a book and listen to my MP3, ignoring the passionate pleas to BUY, BUY, BUY or the banal " If you look out of your right hand window you can see Mont Blanc ! " said with a stifled Captains' yawn.

However I do concede being greeted by the rising phoenix of a Peter Bath at the aircraft steps might be worth paying the extra for, and when I get to my late 50's I might want some extra leg for the old pins...but for now...give me a young East European hostie to flash past my eyes with that vacant look any day. Marvellous as Aldridge use to say.

As Lovejet also mentions, European are going to have to do something about those old knackered 200's because at $140 a barrel it must be crucifying them if they aren't hedged, and I guess Palmair will have to slam on a fuel duty and euro surcharge to their holiday prices soon, if they haven't already?

Finally what's gonna happen when RYR put their 3 airframes into BOH? Will Palmair and Thompson do a runner down to Exeter? Will you then have to drive all that way just to get the famous full service?

Unfortunately the economics are blowing cold and unless they get new equipment in...I think its game over

EZY - Grenoble

I think EasyJet have axed Bournemouth-Grenoble as this is the only destination currently not on avaliable from Grenoble, Birmingham, Bristol, Gatwick and Luton are avaliable from Grenoble with customers able to purchase flights but still not avaliable from Bournemouth.

BOH Development

I've heard that the MAG Board have now approved the money for a new terminal, apron and CAT 3 at BOH. About £42m investment.

Good news. Now the work can start.

BOH Development

So sorry, I was wrong with the investment that MAG has committed to BOH.

I said it was £42m.

Too ambitious I thought, it's actually £45m!

Work is expected to start this summer on the apron, the CAT3 ILS, and then the terminal. Complete by 2010.

It 'aint no T5, but pretty damm good given the current economic climate.

£45m revamp for airport is back on track
By Katie Clark

BOURNEMOUTH Airport says its multi-million-pound expansion project is poised to restart after months of delays caused by outside organisations.

The airport improvements are due to get back on track next month, boosted by an extra £13 million cash injection by owners Manchester Airport Group.

This will bring the total cost of the expansion project to £45 million.

advertisementWork at the airport has been delayed since the New Forest National Park applied to the High Court for a judicial review of Christchurch Borough Council's decision to grant permission for the development scheme last year.

But a High Court judge shot down the action in April, meaning work could continue on building the new terminal, extra car parks and highways improvements.

Peter Duffy, managing director at the airport said: "We were originally hoping to fast track' the building work but this was delayed by various factors beyond our control, such as a need to satisfy the requirements of some statutory consultees and the application for a judicial review by the New Forest National Park."

He added: "However, now that we have this additional funding secured, we will be able to move on to the next phase of the redevelopment within the next three or four weeks."

The scope of the expansion project has been increased and will now include higher standards of navigation and lighting aids.

Mr Duffy said: "This will enable aircraft to operate in adverse weather conditions and it's an important factor when airlines are considering where they will base aircraft."

And with a large amount of the enabling work completed, improvements on the apron and runway lighting can begin as soon as next month, followed by the building of an interim departure lounge, security facilities, a check-in hall and additional car parks.

Mr Duffy added: "We are aiming to complete the whole £45 million project by Spring 2010, when we will have a modern, attractive airport without any significant operational characteristics that could limit its development in the future.

"During this time our emphasis will be on the safety and security of our passengers as well as maintaining high levels of customer service during the redevelopment process."

Good rumour Ryanair1

Interesting and very plausible set of routes and schedules Ryanair1.

I have always been curious about return of BOH - Hahn, which is still absent and does not appear on your list. That route was very well supported while it operated, surprised that it has'nt returned even though the 'capacity' was supposedly used to launch BOH -Gerona - which has certainly been a solid and perhaps more lucrative route for the company..
