ABERDEEN
Must admit that before Aer Arran came onto the scene, the Ryanair ABZ-DUB schedule wasn't much use. It was often more convienient to drive to Edinburgh and use Aer Lingus on their EDI-DUB route.

Ryanair
I hadn't realised the DUB route was down to only a 3w service - talk about a token presence.
The quotes I saw in the local press this morning had the Ryanair spokesman saying that the DUB route "could return next summer" & that they would still be interested in speaking to ABZ about services to Europe upon completion of the runway extension.
Perhaps a case for BAA telling Ryanair "don't call us"...in effect, they already have.

The H-word returns
UNITED Airlines is running the rule over a direct flight to link the oil industry hubs of Aberdeen and Houston after committing itself to maintaining its routes between New York and Scotland's two largest cities.
The carrier, which was created in November through the merger of Continental and United, operates 21 flights a day from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Newark during the summer and 13 services during the winter.
Charles Duncan, United's vice-president of transatlantic sales, said the airline was today preparing to welcome the one-millionth passenger on its Edinburgh-to-Newark service.
But he said additional flights on the existing Scottish routes would be dependent on passenger demand, oil prices and the performance of the economies on both sides of the Atlantic.
Duncan told The Scotsman: "We remain committed to the Scottish marketplace. We have no intentions of leaving or cutting back and passengers will now have access to a bigger network. We have no plans to add flights to Edinburgh or Glasgow at the moment. But we're also not planning on pulling anything down, which I think is just as important."
On a possible Aberdeen route, Duncan added: "We are considering it. We'd love to serve Aberdeen direct and, at the moment, we have a lot of passengers from Aberdeen flying to Houston via our Heathrow service.
"But the challenge we face is that there are not enough people using the service to justify a non-stop flight between Aberdeen and Houston. The 757 aircraft we use to fly from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Newark wouldn't reach Houston so we'd need a larger airplane.
"But we're aware of the demand and are working with partners to link Aberdeen with the Heathrow flight. I was also excited to hear Lufthansa is going to be flying from Aberdeen to Frankfurt, which will give passengers another link into our network."
(From the Scotsman)
Lots of "ifs" "buts" & "maybes" of course!! Where's that Silverjet 757 when you need it?

City Star Executive - I think I recall as it seems so long ago now!! - were looking to use someone's 757 on their IAH route. I thought it was Silverjet.
ABZ had a busy time of it during Offshore Europe 2011 (STV):
A record level of people passed through the terminals at Aberdeen Airport during this month’s Offshore Europe week.
More than 67,000 passengers from across the globe used the airport from September 3-10 – over 2000 more than the 2009 total.
And the airport recorded its biggest ever day of departures on Thursday, September 8 with 6623 passengers leaving the Granite City as quickly as they could.
The airport’s operations director said: “We were aware that the week went incredibly well, with months of planning going into the operation, but that compared to the number of passengers we welcomed and processed, I am amazed.
“The team here pulled out all the stops to deliver a first class result and it showed.
“It was a great team effort, with people from across the airport campus, and from across the many employers, helping each other to ensure we had no operational issues, no delays due to the number of passengers, great feedback and an increase in retail spend across the airport.”
Well done to them all.

Taxiway Mike...
...is now in operation, replacing Whiskey. Has it been a smooth transition or are pilots asking where the Whiskey has gone?
With forecasters predicting another poor winter, has ABZ acquired any extra equipment to fight the snow? With the debacle of last year across various BAA airports, I recall BAA saying they were to purchase more equipment to beef up operations in snow clearance. I think ABZ did very well last year in the circumstances, but has it shared in getting extra equipment, eg. a 2nd hand snowplough, or another shovel?
Mind you as well as snow in Oct, Ive also heard a heatwave is coming for some parts of the UK, so who knows what the weather is going to do!

Heathrow
Seems to be a few stories doing the rounds about concern over ringfencing slots at LHR to ensure the future of the NE link.
Are the concerns justified, & can they - & by 'they' I'm talking about the likes of NESTRANS & other representatives of the business community - insist upon slots being reserved for an ABZ service? They can ask, not sure airlines will necessarily listen.
At the moment I'm not aware of any imminent threat - but you never know for the future.

Today is the official opening of the 124m runway extension, although it is already in use.
Whether it makes any difference to the range of routes available for the people of the NE, especially in these uncertain times, remains to be seen.
BA Airbus gets a water cannon welcome.

Whither now for bmi Regional?
With events seemingly moving forward in the last 24hrs with regards to a disposal by Lufthansa of bmi, what does the future hold for Regional, in terms of jobs, equipment, routes & of course their Aberdeen HQ?
Does it have a future, & who possibly would be interested in it? Anyone domestically, or could interest come from abroad?

Air France/KLM
Press and Journal - Article - Airline boss sees Aberdeen as key hub for growing network
Local story about the importance the Group place upon ABZ links to AMS & CDG.
Again said looking to further increase AMS; & I presume the "larger aircraft" they talk about for CDG are the E190s regularly instead of a mix of 190/175/145s?

BBC report
BBC News - Sale may lead to Scottish airline
As one or two have speculated, the name of Ian Woodley is mentioned as one of the people involved.
And mentions links " to London airports OTHER than LHR" in part of the story.
So...goodbye BD to LHR...hello Business Air to STN???

With both Flybe & Easyjet having increased rotations on the LGW route this winter season, are there any winners & losers (since Easy arrived to compete on the route in June), or have both increased market share?
Was reported in the local press yesterday that the Lufthansa route to FRA had got off to a "good" start. So not earth shattering, but equally not bad I guess from a standing start to an airport that has never been offered before! I hope Lufthansa allow the route to develop if they want to offer FRA as a hub. Someone estimated that the first outbound flight on Sun had ~70pax aboard the E190, but don't know how accurate that was. Equally, not sure how many people from Germany would want to visit the NE Scotland in winter!

Travelled home from Barcelona last night through Frankfurt. We were originally booked to go via AMS with KLM but for some reason work changed it to Lufthansa.
It put approx another hour on the travelling time home. Id say there must have been about 60-70 people on the 190 early evening.
