Passenger numbers
So another dip in numbers, 5% Sept 2010 v same time last year. BAA keep saying they see hope, but the headline figure continues to disappoint. The oil & gas industry is said to be in rude health & renewables is coming onto the scene, so is the decrease more leisure-orientated, eg, the collapse of GSM working its way through the system. Or are businesses up here more inclined to "video-conferencing" for example rather than get on a plane nowadays?
Who promotes the region for tourism, should these efforts be stepped up - seems to me the eye has been taken off the ball here compared to elsewhere.
I note edinburgh has benefitted with all those routes launched recently. Should BAA be pulling out the stops to do the same thing at ABZ (in proportion of course!)
Is the potential there at ABZ for the market to turn around & start growing again? I'm beginning to wonder...

I want Trump's golf resort. Whatever people say about him & it, & a lot has been said, the region needs to diversify from oil & gas - they won't be around forever. The recent Bristow announcement was certainly of interest, but renewables is still somewhat of an unknown commodity. Thank God oil & gas started about 40yrs ago up here, where would we be now without it? Particularly if the Green Mob had their way? Tourism has to be one of the ways forward for the future.
**I read this morning that klm are to add another AMS services to all the Scottish airports, presumably from Nov. Assuming the early morning arrival remains, it would mean 5 flights on a typical weekday from here. I am sure they did have 5 flights for a very short time about 2yrs ago before it quickly reverted to 4/3.
**Edit 25/10/10: the extra service not to start until Apr 2011.
ps. great to see the recent 757 movements courtesy of Thomas Cook. Why did Boeing stop making these beautiful aircraft?

Saw recently that Eastern are now offering connections to the NCL Emirates flight to Dubai, presumably after discussions between T3 & EK. Wonder if it will take away business from the EK GLA flight. Cost/time of travelling by road/rail to GLA v cost/time of flying down to NCL to link up with the EK service there.
The announcement by Bristow offering their services in the renewables sector I do find interesting. Looks like Bristow think there is mileage in the sector, but just how much remains to be seen. Maintenance, construction & hook-up may need manpower, but whether renewables ever measures up to the oil industry in its heyday is the great unknown. I suppose it's a bit like the early days in the oil industry - no-one knew what the demand would be for sure.
Will be interesting to see whether CHC Scotia & Bond follow their lead!

SM,
Naturally you'll show the facts and figures to prove that . Your hatred of Bristow is starting to show through in almost every post you make. You even chose to make offensive remarks about dead Bristow employees in your PMs. What a sad case you are
Looked like a lot of marketing hype by Bristow's commercial bods.

Its all very confusing. CWL-ABZ involves the aircraft change but on the way back there doesn't seem to be one...so its technically half a new route, in the next few weeks they may just use the SZ all the way to ABZ i.e. NQY-CWL-NCL-ABZ-NCL-CWL-NQY but that would then screw up the return NCL-CWL making it later in the day. But on Sundays the new CWL-NCL Saab route goes all the way to ABZ involving no aircraft change.
Also it appears that between 24 Dec- 3 Jan T3 are running 3 daily flights. Lets hope 3 daily return in the end.

bmi Regional
bmiR, Flybe & eastern are the three UK airlines that, in my view, hold in their hands the future of domestic & international services at ABZ.
But what does the future hold for bmiR here? Having dropped BHX recently, & AMS, BRU & KRS also having been tried then axed, are there still opportunities at ABZ for bmiR? Their HQ is here, will that remain at Dyce though? Only today I read on the NWI thread that they are having to deny the possible axing of the NWI route.
Can they survive at ABZ on a diet of MAN, GRQ & ebj if NWI ends - plus the odd Heathrow rotation for Mainline?

Snowvember
Will probably have to bulldoze all the snow away first!! That will take a month.
I wonder how many times ABZ has been SNOCLO in the last 5 days, will probably set a record!

I know! And we're not even into "proper" winter yet!
Is the 34 'ils' still off? The 16 glideslope was not useable yesterday due "snow banks".
Grim stuff!
edit: now with added lightning for extra interest! TAF looks lively - 0200m, TSSN, +SHSN etc!

Southampton
T3 increasing to 4 rotations M-F from Feb 11. Don't know if that's direct or a one-stop job.
Maybe they're striking before Flybe think about coming back to it!

I note, not with any great surprise, that the Trump Org have given their backing to the runway ext announcement. They have "contacts" within the airlines that they are talking to...
Wonder if the next stage is an exclusive apron & handling/customs facilities for Trump & his chums? I'm only half-joking!

Having flown with both Aer Lingus and Ryanair to Dublin they're both pretty good on the short hop. When I heard that Aer Lingus were leaving GLA for Aer Arrann, I had a look at the prices as I had never flown on at ATR72. I say I LOOKED at the prices as they'd shot up from the A320 previously on the route.
Slow turboprop with high cost base versus B737-800 with possibly the industry's lowest cost base. Unless this is a serious attempt to feed the long haul at Dublin, I don't see what Aer Arrann are bringing to the table. People are happy with the lack of amenities on such a short flight.

Fair's fair!
New MD Derek Provan seems to have hit the ground running, what with finally a start date for a runway extension & new routes from Aer lingus & easyjet. And the implementation of the heli monitoring system all the way from airport to rig & back - presumably no "gaps" in coverage? I suppose the last one is more NATS, but still!
Well done to him & his team, & to his predecessor Kevin Brown, who also would have put in the work during his tenure.
I'm not the BAA's biggest fan, but I'm in a charitably festive mood! Onwards & upwards again...hopefully!
Finally great work from the snow clearing crews battling the snow!! Rather you than me!
