Branson U-turn as new British airline to shut | The Sunday Times
Not good news at all. Not unexpected but thought they would have lasted at least the 3 years. 120 and 117 on my last two flights bit it's all in the yield.
------
I've read the full article now and apart from a scaremongering headline, nothing seems imminent, for now at least.

So looks like AF pilots may well strike next week, anyone know if this is likely to extend to the sub brands like Hop?

I note Virgin not officially confirmed yet the end of LR. May only be matter of time of course.
Eastern bringing in the E135 on some LBA/SOU rotations in competition with Flybe's forthcoming 'bus shuttle' so putting up a fight.
Ferrovial/Macquarie raising the capital (debt) to purchase ABZ/GLA/SOU airports from HAH. I know many acquisitions are made using debt raised to buy the asset, but it is what I feared. Raising debt to buy assets - what is left over to develop the asset, if indeed that is the intention, if you are then having to pay off said debt used to buy your target in the first place?

On a better note traffic grew 8% to 339k
In regards to virgin the loads have picked up and I'd say 65% or higher recently, a lot of the time they are close to full, I wonder if like ba cityflyer that this apd is having an affect as it's such a large tax to add to domestic tickets and it seems to be stalling growth for airports that are not Heathrow.
Maybe if Scotland does go independent and the apd is cut and eventually got rid of more airlines will be willing to fly out of scottish airports,
One can only hope but it would be a major loss if virgin were to pull out considering with just 6 flights a day it's over 1000 daily seats lost to the major destination out of Aberdeen.

Seen the oil price lately? Wonder where it will fall to. Proof you can't predict the markets.
But in my experience, low oil prices = slowdown in activity in everything in Aberdeen = less activity at ABZ.
The N.Sea is mature, costly. A low oil price especially a sustained one will not be good news.
The Atlantic Margin may or may not be a new boom - but any oil out here will be expensive to get at.
Uncertain times (in more ways than one)?

any idea why BA have removed the check-in machines at ABZ?
You now have to queue for your boarding pass even if you only have hand-luggage whereas at LHR you can print the damn thing out from a machine
From the comments by the check-in staff it didn't seem to be a popular move but they were unable to say why it had been done
The other operators still have their machines in plce

ABZ was really packed last week - airside all you need is someone asking for a coffee at the bar and the queue is back into security - it really needs a major upgrade/expansion

Ferrovial/Macquarie

I presume the fact that the story has reappeared in the financial journals means a deal is about to be formally concluded. Suppose it depends on your definition of 'a few weeks'.
The story doesn't reveal anything different, save for that some HAH shareholders wanted a competitive bidding process which delayed the Ferrovial bid somewhat.
Don't know if the offer of 'around £1bn' for the three means that, with Macquarie on board, they were able - or told to by HAH - to up their bid, as Ferrovial were thought to have put in a bid of ~£800m initially.
What they do with the asset will be of most interest to us once they have it.

Considering Macquarie owned part of Bristol plus a number of australian airports perhaps it's good they are having a stake since they spend money on investment, Bristol has done really well in recent times

Route Cuts
Couple of routes that look like they are gone.
First is RIX which is no longer bookable for next summer so can now be assumed as cut with final rotation this Sunday. Poor attempt by BT especially considering the loads haven't been too bad - maybe the 735 isn't the best aircraft for for the route.
Second is KSU which is no longer bookable after 23/10 and with the continued low uptake of this route, I think it can also be safely assumed that this route is gone.

Not all negative though, a few new routes starting and capacity being added on several existing e.g. A319's on the evening CPH.

Surprised KSU lasted as long as it did!

I'm left to wonder after what ba said about the London City route whether the cost of taxes and charges have anything to do with all these routes being lost. Aberdeen is nearly twice as expensive as the central belt airports for landing fees and add to that the stupid apd tax and airlines profit margins must be really small,
I thought riga was a great route, always seemed to be close to full so hopefully it does come back for next summer but potentially something for airport management to think about given the fact they charge all this money and nothing is invested back into airport infrastructure......
New owner with new management could well be a good change, I'm sure it can't be worse than the current mob

...or... meet the new boss... same as the old boss...
I suspect BT found the market they were mainly aiming for (ie. business to Baku) wasn't there; but that there is a different market out there for RIX - one for Flybe maybe???
KSU - a shame but agreed no surprise. Norway is SVG, BGO, OSL.
Let's face it, ABZ is so expensive & specialized, some of these markets warrant no more than ad-hoc on a bizjet!!

Seems to be that since a new owner is taking over the airport all investment has stopped, planned stands stopped, upgrades stopped, airport still needs to expand so shows the management style of neglect
