Call for Aer Lingus to use smaller aircraft for flights to US from Shannon

Aer Lingus could successfully operate all-year-round daily flights to the US from Shannon if it used smaller, more efficient aircraft, it has been claimed.

The airline has been called upon to re-evaluate its operation at Shannon Airport, where for the past three winters it has ceased operations on its north Atlantic routes.

The airline has claimed that the New York and Boston routes are not viable in winter. But United Airlines maintains a year-round operation between Shannon and Newark, while Delta Airlines operates a daily service to New York’s JFK from May to October.

Fianna Fáil transport spokesman Timmy Dooley believes the aircraft Aer Lingus operates on US routes from Shannon are too big. The two US carriers operate single-aisle narrow-bodied Boeing 757s, which carry no more than 180 passengers, while Aer Lingus flies the twin-aisle Airbus A330, which can carry between 272 and 325 passengers. “The A330 is too big and this is why I believe they haven’t been able to make the route viable and can’t operate it all year,” he said.

Maybe the a321 could operate these routes during the winter months ? Would they have the range to do those routes ? If so then It would give the a321s something to do

Aren't United and Delta feeding major hubs and connections at the US end, making viability during the winter easier, leaving Aer Lingus with the point to point traffic?
The A321 does not have the range required.

Mueller recently suggested additional capacity to the US form Ireland next year. If they are to use a smaller aircraft then not only could they have a winter service bit they could also go daily to both Boston and JFK from SNN. Would they consider leasing a 757er or the likes?

Devil

Come to think of it, if Aer Lingus were to get smaller sized aircraft for the USA from Shannon for daily flights through summer and winter, you know what, they could not nearly do it from Cork as well!

Now, that is an idea!

Well if Mister Dooley can chase United out of Shannon, provide Aer Lingus with 757's, pay and manage the fleet diversification costs, and convince them that Shannon is the centre of the universe, then I'm sure Aer Lingus will operate the routes year round. Otherwise it's a bit of a non-story

Why doesn't Dooley just go and check the range of an A321 instead of asking stupid questions in the public domain - or does he know full well they can't do that trip but just wants to get his name in the papers anyway?

Until the next generation of narrow body Airbus jets come along this just isn't a runner. No way EI are going to go leasing 757s to run marginal routes from Shannon. And Dooley must be one of the most useless excuses for a politician I've ever seen.

Maybe Aerlingus don't want to put themselves under pressure by leasing narrow bodies although it makes perfect sense to operate them on SNN JFK and possibly ORK JFK.

757s have poor cargo which is EI's mainstay in lean times. The A330 on the other hand with its 222in cross section was designed for standard containers. Just because cabin half empty, flight not necessarily loss making. I wish Airbus had built an A310 follow on though with CCQ to A330/340 - they basically abandoned the 762 replacement market which is being inadequately filled by wingleted 757s.

Kinocker. Read back and tell me where Dooley mention an A321. Im sure he knows as much as you do about this business. Narrow bodies are the way to go and the Cork lads have already guessed it.. for Cork too. This is not just a dooley dream. But yes Cargo has always been an important part of the transatalntic business from SNN too.

I view this site through the iPhone app and it's not clear from using it if the article is the entire comment or if part of it is the poster's own comments. If the piece about the A321 was not a quote from Dooley then fair enough, comment withdrawn.

But my point remains that I don't see any prospect of EI narrowbodies crossing the Atlantic until Airbus produce a plane that can do it. They won't mix their aircraft types purely for that purpose.

If an operator like Ryanair purchased 737-900's they would be perfect for Shannon transatlantic ops..ditto for the A320 NEO, so maybe EI will use this ex Shannon all year round in the future.

It's worth noting that Aer Lingus is currently reviewing options for fleet renewal and with US Airways pushing Airbus to increase the A321NEO range to compete with the B757.

Not so respectful

I do not understand why you would sign your post respectfully when clearly it was not.
The chap asked a simple question directing it at no one in particular. If you read it and did not have the answer then move on. If it was offensive to you then report it. Somehow I doubt it was the case.
If you acted like that to an OAP on a bus I would speak out also, therefore I cannot act differently on line. Courtesy costs nothing both in the real and virtual worlds.
Rant over....
