A spur off the Limerick-Galway rail line to Shannon airport would be nice
As long as there was some sort of joined up thinking and any sort of funding was stopped for Galway airport, then yes.

In fairness, they haven't managed a spur off the Dublin-Belfast line into Dublin Airport, even though it's shorter and would potentially carry loads of passengers.

This is more a reflection of the status of rail travel in Ireland than attitudes to individual airports.

Some would say it was because it would look bad for DUB if SNN had a rail connection before DUB had it's underground/metro link. It could also be said that road infrastructure to Shannon is sufficient now and we have no need for rail spur.

For an Airport that cany even support a Taxi rank it's a joke to expect a Rail Link to be viable!

Thanks for the sanity Denis. There is NO WAY Shannon can sustain a rail link, there are just nowhere near enough pax through the airport. Period. I suspect even the bus links are only justifed through intermediate use from elsewhere to Limerick and Galway.

Stop pipe dreaming. The country is broke, and will be for years to come. Pushing schemes like this is to ignore realities.

Shannon Airport alone probably can't justify it, but throw in a link to Shannon town and the Industrial Estate and it's more of a goer.

But, yeah, the money isn't there anyway.

I agree with 840. The numbers to support SNN airport alone would not have ever been enough even at the height of SNN's top pax numbers. But the numbers using the industrial estate nearby and Shannon town would've helped a great deal.

The motorway road infrastructure is excellent and nearly complete but from an environmentally friendly perspective taking more cars off the road by putting a rail spur to Shannon (Industrial Estate, Town and Airport) would pay for itself in the long term. That's not much to ask is it?

I doubt it, in all honesty (and I have been involved in rail schemes and airport surface access work in the UK). Demand for industrial estates, like airports, tends to be very dispersed, whereas rail requires concentrated flows to be effective and efficient, as does all public trqansport to a degree. Shannon town would help, but road journey times would probably be better than rail, in origin to destination terms, so without road pricing in Limerick rail would not necessarily generate significant modal shift. As you say, the road network is well developed now, and rail journey times, especially from the Galway direction, would be very uncompetitive. If a (heavy) rail link to DUB cannot be justified, SNN does not have a hope. Ever. And I say that as a public transport advocate and user (where it exists).

The rail idea raises itself again.

In short, the answer is no. There is already a regular bus service between Limerick and Shannon. Its hourly off peak and half hourly at peak. These services see very low level of patronage at many times- I've been on a bus in the afternoon with 4 others.

Its unlikely the train would be cheaper or faster than the bus, so its a bad idea.

The rail idea raises itself again.
Well the only place i've seen it being raised is here. Certainly isnt a political/election issue in the Mid West. If it was to be done it should have been done as part of the Western Rail section from Limerick to Ennis and that ship has sailed and as the country is broke..that is that.

However its very hard to say whether it would have worked or not. Many people (myself included) questioned the sense in the link from Limerick to Ennis to Galway and thats apparently doing fine (the ennis to Limerick section being the more established and successful as far as i know). Irish Rail have recently announced extra services have/are to be added so it must be doing relatively ok.

There's still 6-8k working in the industrial estate and in the Smithstown area(Zimmer, Intel, IAA, LTT etc and all the smaller industries in that area), even with recent job losses and a very large portion of those are not from Shannon town. (A lot commuiting from Limerick, Ennis and down from Galway) With the quality of the roads around Shannon, most use the car and pooling is popular.

Its moot anyway as it wont happen.

The Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin has quashed the appeal of Mary Kelly, who was convicted in 2004 of criminal damage to a US military aircraft at Shannon Airport.

Shannon Airport has rejected Ryanair’s offer to increase flights there due to what it called the airline’s "unreasonable demands". Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary is travelling to Shannon today to make a statement.

While the Ryanair / DAA war of words continues, this might be something positive

Definitely a good idea to use Shannon as a cargo hub.

freight hub ?
to do it right, you'd need cat 3 approaches at both ends, for the reliability that is so paramount to such operations.
good luck,though.

i'd say they might , you know, actually factor stuff like that into any proposals for a cargo hub..I'd say Lynxs might have some idea what they actually need to do this properly..

but sure it'll never work, yadda yadda etc

Good news. Can see EI doing the same thing as this year, not running for 11 weeks or so if both Delta and Continental are running daily
