A spur off the Limerick-Galway rail line to Shannon airport would be nice

In fairness, they haven't managed a spur off the Dublin-Belfast line into Dublin Airport, even though it's shorter and would potentially carry loads of passengers.
This is more a reflection of the status of rail travel in Ireland than attitudes to individual airports.

Some would say it was because it would look bad for DUB if SNN had a rail connection before DUB had it's underground/metro link. It could also be said that road infrastructure to Shannon is sufficient now and we have no need for rail spur.

Thanks for the sanity Denis. There is NO WAY Shannon can sustain a rail link, there are just nowhere near enough pax through the airport. Period. I suspect even the bus links are only justifed through intermediate use from elsewhere to Limerick and Galway.
Stop pipe dreaming. The country is broke, and will be for years to come. Pushing schemes like this is to ignore realities.

Shannon Airport alone probably can't justify it, but throw in a link to Shannon town and the Industrial Estate and it's more of a goer.
But, yeah, the money isn't there anyway.

I agree with 840. The numbers to support SNN airport alone would not have ever been enough even at the height of SNN's top pax numbers. But the numbers using the industrial estate nearby and Shannon town would've helped a great deal.
The motorway road infrastructure is excellent and nearly complete but from an environmentally friendly perspective taking more cars off the road by putting a rail spur to Shannon (Industrial Estate, Town and Airport) would pay for itself in the long term. That's not much to ask is it?

The rail idea raises itself again.
In short, the answer is no. There is already a regular bus service between Limerick and Shannon. Its hourly off peak and half hourly at peak. These services see very low level of patronage at many times- I've been on a bus in the afternoon with 4 others.
Its unlikely the train would be cheaper or faster than the bus, so its a bad idea.

However its very hard to say whether it would have worked or not. Many people (myself included) questioned the sense in the link from Limerick to Ennis to Galway and thats apparently doing fine (the ennis to Limerick section being the more established and successful as far as i know). Irish Rail have recently announced extra services have/are to be added so it must be doing relatively ok.
There's still 6-8k working in the industrial estate and in the Smithstown area(Zimmer, Intel, IAA, LTT etc and all the smaller industries in that area), even with recent job losses and a very large portion of those are not from Shannon town. (A lot commuiting from Limerick, Ennis and down from Galway) With the quality of the roads around Shannon, most use the car and pooling is popular.
Its moot anyway as it wont happen.
The Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin has quashed the appeal of Mary Kelly, who was convicted in 2004 of criminal damage to a US military aircraft at Shannon Airport.

Shannon Airport has rejected Ryanair’s offer to increase flights there due to what it called the airline’s "unreasonable demands". Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary is travelling to Shannon today to make a statement.

While the Ryanair / DAA war of words continues, this might be something positive
Definitely a good idea to use Shannon as a cargo hub.

i'd say they might , you know, actually factor stuff like that into any proposals for a cargo hub..I'd say Lynxs might have some idea what they actually need to do this properly..
but sure it'll never work, yadda yadda etc
