Summer 2014
Summer 14 with RYR not looking so good.
STN reduced to X7 weekly
LPL reduced to X5 weekly
PIK reduced to X5 weekly
BHX stays at X4 weekly
FAO stays at X2 weekly
ALC stays at X2 weekly
BHX now departs LDY at 0825 on a Mon. Can't see a early departure working for BHX.

I assume the reduction on BHX is due to competition from EZY which wasn't there before
With flybe doing up to 7 flights a day and EZY up to 3 I'm surprised Ryanair hasn't dropped it completely
I support the airport fully but is there really any need for so many flights to BHX from NI?

Is that the complete summer 2014 plan? no ALC ? How does that compare to S 2013? What is the likely effect on airport passenger numbers?
Thinking about it, 23 flights per week with 180 passengers = 4140 times 52 means 215,000 passengers per year, surely that can't be correct??
I don't seem to remember seeing those cuts on the Airport 30 year plan !

Lanzarote flight not operating next summer
Bad Bear,
You're right, it's not correct.
There are scheduled to be 23 inbound, and 23 outbound per week. That's 46 in total.
Still, I'm very surprised the STN route has been cut having had excellent LFs during the summer for many years.

Just my views on recent monthly stats. LDY has had another slightly disappointing month. Looking to the end of year figures possibily 20k pax down on previous year. With FR reducing schedule slightly for s14, only 23 flights per week what does the future hold for LDY. Surely bigger losses in years to come?
Views welcome
Thanks again. Carn for the monthly stats

BHD2BFS,
Be a crazy idea to move LC routes to LDY.
1. No PSO for LDY DUB route, not viable without it.
2. LDY GLA was long standing but couldn't withstand impact of FR on PIK, too price competitive! Simples.

Yesterday Sat 21st Dec 7.55am Ryanair outbound Liverpool flight delayed for ages and did not leave until around 1pm 'ish, maybe even 1.30pm.
Many p*ssed off travellers, allegedly tempers flared in departure and I know many who where travelling to Anfield for Liverpool v Cardiff match ended up missing the match.
No definite reason yet for the delay but some rumour that inbound flight had a bird strike on final approach on way in and delay was due to waiting for technicians to come from elsewhere (Belfast?) to check plane.
Anyone on here know any more?

With this contraction the airport is screwed. I'm not even sure a new airline would help. APD being cut might help:

The Airport was the main news story on BBC Radio Foyle this morning and it was not good coverage.
Damian Tierney was on live in Studio and said that
1. City of Culture had no positive impact whatsoever on the airport business and that 2013 actually saw a reduction.
2. 2014 will be a real bad year.
3. Because of 2 then he cannot rule out job losses.
A common thread among listeners who texted in etc was the rubbish flight times. Me personally, I am a great supporter of the airport and I am looking to take my wife for a surprise weekend away to London in April for her 40th birthday. Of course I want to use Derry. Outbound flight to Stansted on Friday 4th April goes at 8.05pm at night. Totally useless for a weekend away.
Return on Sunday is not too bad, leaves London at 3.30pm but the late Friday is a deal breaker. The flight times are hopeless for the leisure traveller looking for a weekend away. Landing in London at around 9pm at night and by the time you get to your hotel or whatever sure it will be at least 10.30/11.00pm
If the flight times are ok many Northwest passengers will forgive a £20 cheaper fare in Belfast and will still use Derry in that case as the extra travel is not worth the £20. But they will not write-off losing a day in London for a 2 night trip and will instead travel to Belfast for earlier flight time so as to get a proper weekend in London.
By the sounds of it the Airport have no control over the flight times and no doubt they receive the rota from Ryanair and that's the end of it. I would love to know what is going on. I am confident that if they also ran a 9am or 10am London flight on a Friday then it would have good load factors.

Depressing news indeed but councillor Joe Miller (DUP) was quoted as saying it is time that Derry City Council had a route development scheme that may subsidise the start up of new routes (a route development fund therefore).
While I would welcome this I also think it should be funded by Stormont and not the local council just as the original route development fund that benefited Aldergrove was some years ago. City of Derry did not really benefit from that although if I recall one route did start but later ceased.
I could imagine the howls of discontent if a new fund were started to benefit City of Derry. On the other hand I could not imagine Stormont actually doing it so it will fall to Derry City Council though even then there will be complaints that it represents state subsidies.

It is going to be very difficult this year for LDY. Even with the COC it looks like 20K drop in numbers and from reports of a further reduction of 10% for 2014 it looks very bleak (and could be higher)
As usual local politicians emphasising the economic benefit of the airport to Derry, but how much money is actually coming into Derry as many pax only head west to Donegal and East to Limavady Coleraine ? Also how many pax that use LDY are incoming tourists or business pax as opposed to outgoing?
Wish LDY well for 2014
