Airport all over BBC Radio Foyle today for 9 job redundancies.

5 have gone already due to people leaving etc while the other 4 may be subject to compulsory redundancy.

Airport Management blaming the losses due to the reduction in Ryanair movements for Summer 2014.

It was also stated on Radio Foyle that additional staff had been taken on in anticipation of increased business that did not materialise and that was the reason why they were over staffed and now needing redundancies.

The spokesman also said that the airport expected further flight reductions next winter followed by an upturn next year but did not specify the basis for the optimism about next year.

I suppose it is better than pessimism.

The airport have hired a former exec from FlyBe to take charge of route development.
The new hiring is simultaneous with the redundancies.

Not wishing to sound disrespectful to the supporters of LDY but with a further decline in pax numbers forecast for 2014 (-15%??), is there a possibility that the airport could close unless DCC coughs up more financial support?

I don't think there is any possibility that LDY will close. Simply put it is not like a private company. It was opened and has been developed as a political decision and its closure would amount to loss of political support for the idea rather than a commercial decision which I do not see happening.

Concern I would have over Derry is simply that Strabane rate payers we will be caught for
much higher rates when both councils amalgamate, we have already been assured by several councilors in Strabane that this won't happen and to me that more or less confirms that our rates will get a hefty hike.
As another poster has said CoDA is polictical and will be kept open as long as the rate payers foot the bill.

I think it would actually increase its passenger numbers if it introduced sustainable flights to places like Spain rather than London constantly. They should also increase frequencies and offer more airlines.

But really what they need to do is expand the airport. It is far too small.

This has been brewing the last few days, industrial action is the last thing the airport needs right now.

Wow.............I'm so excited

Similar to the emails I receive from other airports as well as airlines and travel companies.

If the flights are suitable I will use LDY if not slightly longer trek to BFS or BHD!!!

Can any of the regular contributors on the LDY thread see any potential of new routes in the future?

Surprised at the reduction in Stansted load factor but really believe that rubbish flight times are to blame. You can't really get a weekend in London now Fri - Sunday as the sole Friday flight goes out at 8pm so no doubt many will go via Belfast.
