Ryanair fly 16 routes to 6 countries from Knock, 21 in 8 countries from Cork and 23 from Shannon.

They fly 6 from Derry only more than Kerry at 5 although it also offers more countries.

The flights from Derry are mostly domestic in nature as opposed to international. If City of Derry had been built on the other side of the border rather than at Eglington how different things might be.

Sad news about Falcon for Summer 2015.

Just tried booking something for July /Aug 2015 and Derry does not appear in airport drop down list.

Just heard on local radio that there has been an absurd carry on at city of Derry this morning.

Loads of passengers delayed from LEAVING the airport as no-one has turned up to man the border patrol at arrivals and thus passengers on an Alicante arrival and Birmingham arrival have been unable to leave the airport.

Totally farcical if true.

How long did the pax have to wait? Last thing you want when you get home home from holidays is a UK Border delay

Flew from LDY yesterday and got seriously told off for taking a picture inside the terminal (not of the entrance to the screening area)... "Pictures only with approval of the management" Have they turned LDY prematurely into a living museum where one needs permisson to take pictures of artefacts or have they been annexed by North Korea recently.... ? Needlees to say that afterwards I got the full "random" security screening treatment including laptop check, shoes off etc. So just be careful when flying from LDY - taking pictures is a big no no.

I flew to London in April and took loads after security right up until walking up the 737 steps and not a word said.

Must have been a 'Jobsworth Johnny' working on your trip.

BHX 2015

The Ryanair 2015 summer schedule has been uploaded for BHX and one of the missing routes is LDY.

The base has been 4 units for years and it has been arranged for 3 thus far although it is early days and LDY could be squeezed in by moving routes to away based aircraft or re-timing some existing services.

However has anybody heard anything at the LDY end of the route?

This airport is doing itself no favours.

Its opening hours are terrible. If they don't watch themselves it is going to end up closing.

They NEED to open up routes with other airlines.

Not much demand Owen, I did a lot of research for a charter airline.

Basically a regional airport with restrictions for take off performance due to length etc. 737/320 thats it.
And the demand wasnt there with Belfast just down the road and Dublin a bit further.
Thats it.

Has the end of BHX been confirmed? No. Not yet. Therefore, criticism of the airport isn't required (yet). I'm sure you've read the rumour Owen that LDY are in discussions with EIR. Perhaps this is to replace FR on BHX?

Personally, I'd rather have a much smaller plane seven days a week than FR three days a week. How useful is it?

Its opening hours are terrible. If they don't watch themselves it is going to end up closing.
Its opening hours reflect demand. The place can't afford to stay open for the craic. If there are no flights, it cannot justify being open.

They NEED to open up routes with other airlines.
And I NEED to win the lottery tonight! I'm sure the airport are trying, but in an environment where new routes to NI are scarce (and I don't count 2xweek to Plovdiv or Timbuktu as success), and the only link to the US is being shut down for a spell over the winter (with their staff still uncertain of what's going to happen), it's fanciful to suggest that an airport like CODA can just pluck new routes out of thin air.

I do agree that unless something gives, and soon, the airport is in danger of closing - but imagine how happy that would make some.

Only anecdotal evidence, but both flights I was on earlier this week (BHX-LDY-PIK) were, by Ryanair standards, rather empty - and the (non-promotional) fares I booked were very low as well. Based on what I experienced, the routes to me looked more like a Flybe/Stobart Air-type market - or, given that the unevitably higher fares on 70 seaters would make some of the current Ryanair clientele make use BFS/BHD instead, maybe even just Loganair Saab 340s for those willing to pay a premium to fly locally.

Just look at Knock opening hours for the summer/winter.

If no one wants to fly there then it a losing proposition remaining open for the hell of it.

Sligo/Waterford have SAR base and opening hours reflect this.
Kerry and Donegal have PSO services and their hours reflect that.

Like it or lump it Dublin is the major population centre on the island.

This means that most marginal services will be here.

Every where else is chasing scraps.

To a certain extent this will include the 2 Belfast airports.

If the UK taxpayer wants to artificially support aviation in the north then the EU would take a dim view.

This is a sad fact of life and wishful thinking will not alter it.

Just tried to book LDY - BHX for next May.

No flights and at the moment it seems the last available flight out of Derry to Birmingham is 28th March 2014.

This means either that the flight has been scrapped or Derry is last on the list when it comes to sorting out the plane rota etc so hopefully may be updated soon.

Just 737s and 320s?

What the hell do you think they want to fly out of there???? Ryanair don't have any 747s!

The airport has been open since 1979 - it ain't closing!

The UK taxpayer ain't supporting any airports, they're taxing them to death with Airport Passenger Duty!

That's why LDY has 6 destinations while Cork, Shannon and Kerry have about 20 each with Ryanair alone.

I do hope not!

EIR were Eirjet who ceased trading in 2006 although they did once operate to Ballykelly International.

Did you mean Aer Arran (or Aer Lingus or Easyjet)?

Or maybe you did mean Eirjet about to make a comeback based at LDY. Now that would be a rumour worth repeating!

If you're going to point out a typo Amelia, make sure you don't cock up your grammar when doing so:

EIR were Eirjet who went cease trading
Anyway. I was referring to EI Regional to answer your question.

More pertinently, BHX has been axed by FR for the summer. Bizarre to keep it for the winter then axe it at the start of the summer schedule. I sincerely hope BE step in to take on the route as they have done at NOC for instance recently, and BHD in the past.

I wasn't pointing out a typo, I had genuinely no idea which airline you were referring to.

As for my own typo thank you for pointing it out as I am a stickler for good grammar and punctuation. (I was originally going to write "went bust" but corrected it to "ceased trading".)

Now are we sure Ryanair have pulled Birmingham or are they just late loading it?
