As Tuesday is a quiet enough day at the airport, once September comes saturday will be very quiet. All flights will have arrived and departed by 08:55. Thats as the FAO and DUB will both be gone.

07:45 - LPL- 08:10
07:50 - STN - 08:15
08:30 - PIK - 08:55

Amelia, you could save a further £9* if you park at one of the many car parks round BFS as they can be as little as £3/day.. but as you said it depends on what the passenger prefers, i fly into LHR quite often and transfer, but i could fly direct from DUB, but the whole idea of a 2 hour drive after returning from a holiday puts me off, even if i could save money

Amelia, you have put a few good points forward and good on you on a really well rounded answer.Im just thinking that if your travelling with kids and/or elderly relatives then why would anyone take a chance going via England with such a tight connection when a daily direct service is offered from BFS.It would only take a fiteen minute delay at the LDY end to put the connection into doubt and as I have worked at MAN im sure bags would not make the connection.Personally,I dont think anyone would take the chance if going for a short weekend break and would fly direct especially going to Eurodisney with a load of kids. But I do hope the point to point Ldy Man does well, especially if it stops people in the northwest having to go to Belfast Harbour Dock (county down) airport over the summer.

Just thought I'd post the graph I created for passenger numbers up to 2010 on Wikipedia.

You can clearly see that the recession basically stopped during 2010.

Anyone now want to predict passenger numbers for 2011?

Smuggness? I'd put 2011 pax at perhaps 390,000 - 399,000.

Damien Tierney has a 2 page spread in the City of Culture Magazine this month and he states that "negotiations are ongoing with other poerators with a view to continuing the service." He also states that LDY will never be able to compete with the 2 bigger Belfast Airports simply because LDY is a regional airport and the other airports have better connectivity, better selection and better flight times. He also goes on to say that when STN was twice daily LDY had 91% penetration of all the people in the LDY catchment area (derry, coleraine, omagh etc) that travel on the route!

Damien also puts in a very good word for RYR and thanks them for their continued support and loyalty towards the airport, but does state that CODA dont make much of a profit from RYR he says " i will not try to fool anybody by saying that we make big money from every passenger that Ryanair carries through here. That's just not the case, but that's the nature of the low-cost airline model."

The article also states that the runway is now capable of letting a 747 or 757 land on it!?

I have seen a 757 use the airport once, it was a First Choice aircraft going to
Reus, but I doubt a 747 can land at the airport.

I think we always knew that, but I'd rather the airport stayed operational with a small income that close. And I do always try and make some token spend as I go in. I usually aim for £5. I think what Derry needs to do if routes are further developed is rent out the space for the airport shop and perhaps have a licensed Starbucks or Costa in there as people always flock to that kind of place. I think that could really be a revenue earner.

Yes at the moment but when road improvements are ever completed to Aughnacloy and Dungiven... I think LDY's day could come. With better connections and knowledge of working with LCC... LDY could become the Low Cost Airport of choice for the whole of Ulster North and South.

The article also states that the runway is now capable of letting a 747 or 757 land on it
Yeah but more importantly, would it be able to take off again full of passengers and fuel?

757's are no problem. 747's are a no go, runway is probably around 500m too short to operate in comfortably and the bearing strength of the taxiways are probably too weak, then of course there is no-where to park, as it would need all four stands on the main apron!

On another note as Jamie states, Saturdays will become very quiet after the summer schedule. I wonder if there is any chance of BE extending to an all year round MAN service? Do we have any idea on how bookings are going?

quote

I'm sure we'll hear something with the next couple of weeks anyway as O'Leary won't want to see the planes lingering about doing next to nout. Though Pete, I ask you as a Solihull resident, would you rather an extra rotation to LDY or a new twice/thrice weekly route to some other location?

Normally I would say a new route but the size of the gaps limit what can be
done and LDY is the best fit but I am shocked that an aircraft in summer is left on the ground for nearly six hours one day and four on another.

There are plenty of French routes I can think off but EMA have quite a few of them already, so LDY seems a good option. BHX-BVA is one route I would like to see but that has been tried and failed at EMA so I doubt what will see the light of day.

Pete

NOC were able to fit a 742, A320 and an ATR I think LDY might just manage it!

I must say LDY would look a picture with a 742 sitting on the tarmac!

Has anyone heard the radio ads for the airport yet that Damien has talked about?

Just seen on the BHD thread that BE's Dash's can breakeven with just 12 passengers. Thing BE will easyily be able to muster 60 passengers willing to travel to MAN each week and then some!

As I'm in London haven't heard the radio adverts, but I've seen loads of articles relating to the BE opertion on local press websites etc.

On a side note... when oh when with the LDY website be updated! The routes map is so out-of-date!

Just having a casual scan round the local papers' websites.

Have a look at the banner ad at the top of the Londonderry Sentinel:

Londonderry Sentinel

The logo is in the same font/design as Exeter airport.

It looks really well, hope to see something like it in tomorrows Sentinel.

I think the new logo is all part of the landside refurbishment and the logo will go above the entrance/exit doors!
