FR and routes
I fear LDY may suffer in that overall FR may find a more profitable route in EUR
It matters not if the LDY flights are full , makes no difference at all
The issue is can FR make more money on some other route , more in flight sales say on a German domestic route , it's all about the average fare paid per seat and the average in flight revenue per seat, so if no one from LDY buys on board sales or extra bag charge or seat preferance fee etc etc ten maybe FR will pull LDY full flights to SPain and go for a less full flight in Germany ?

The problem at the moment is a combination of a lack of spare aircraft available to Ryanair combined with their switch in focus to major airports. Hopefully the next tranche of 738 deliveries will be well under way by next summer and some of these marginal routes can be restored to full schedules alongside the new markets Ryanair are chasing.

Ryanair have confirmed to Radio Foyle that Faro will only run during July this year. We already knew that and disappointingly it is the same for Alicante however Ryanair said it was due to "a lack of aircraft capacity" which presumably means they are short of planes or more specifically have been able to deploy the aircraft more profitably elsewhere.
These routes always had good loads so this raises questions over the yields but on the other hand the routes haven't been axed. However next year will be telling. Will the routes be axed or again just fly one month or will they be increased again following new aircraft deliveries.
It seems a shame having established both routes to let them wither but it does look like a continuing decline from 7 months some years ago on the Alicante route to just 1 month now. This is hardly encouraging to passengers and also means the empty flight at the beginning and end of the season to reposition aircraft since LDY is not a base is divided over fewer flights which again decreases the yield even more starkly.
And when the bean counters decide what routes to run next year will they just see declining revenues or will they take account of their lack of capacity.
We lost Tenerife (and Lanzarote), Bristol, East Midlands and Birmingham. Yes Air Passenger Duty is much to blame but the two Belfast airports still manage. I'm not sure Ryanair and their lack of commitment to the airport in recent years is doing LDY any favours long term.

You have to take most of what Ryanair say with a pinch of salt but I do think they have a genuine shortage of aircraft again this summer. Hopefully once the next batch of deliveries kick in they will be able to return these and other routes to their previous levels if they are profitable. However, it does seem as though higher yield city pairings are winning out over regional connectivity at the moment.

Both of the diverted flights did not even attempt to land, the Liverpool held for a while in pattern over Coleraine and headed for Belfast whereas the London flight arrived and turned back right away over Coleraine.
Strange that at least one flight did not even attempt to land and judge that it was unsafe.
Can an airport close or divert flights simply because the wind exceeds certain levels and is that what happened today?
Or did the ATC person sleep in for work....?

Scodaman. I assume this morning's crosswinds were above limits for the FR 737-800. Also, the direction is conducive to mountain wave activity off the Sperrins and I'm sure there would have been severe low level turbulence. Add in the longer runway at Antrim European airport and it was probably an easy decision for the pilots.
It's in Europe isn't it?
Any thoughts on today's diversions or was it just the geography clarification you were after?
I see Waterford have snagged VLM with flights to BHX and LTN. One wonders why LDY couldn't get them to reinstate a partial return of BHX. Fair play to Waterford management.

BBC is reporting that Flybe and Citywings have applied for treasury funding to start BHX and DUB respectively from City of Derry. Not sure how that's going to pan out, but here's hoping something comes from it.
