The expats in the office are just sitting there like puppets asked by KAL management to make the foreigners believe the company

Now now boys, looks like someone is taking aim for the khan's throne!
Well, from what I heard, most of the recent recruits into KAL are pretty ambitious waiting to usurp the positions of the old timers. We have admiral nelson working hard brown nosing the 777 chiefs with brazillian coffee and trying to dazzle everyone with his knowledge of high terrain volcanoes. We have a crossair computer techie masquerading as a swissair wonderboy knocking on management doors. Not forgetting the bulgarian operative who tried impressing the management with his " preflight " weather/flight plan thingy that he procured through SQ connections.......just too many pathetic jockeying for romeo kilo's and november hotel's positions.

After the horrifying days of the late 90's KAL had some fine expat captains who came from established airlines. Sadly the good times lasted a few years and now KAL is awashed with riffraffs again. Expat management pilots will always be second rate pimps at best of times, sadly.

There are always some jealous people out who try to cut in front of others. It is a fact that staying in KAL for a long time becomes more difficult with all the shortcomings of the past years. It was good earlier but the last two years it went South and down the drain.

Questionable backgrounds arising now and then and find a shelter to make it official somewhere else. Alot of Skippers leave after 2 years, some FO`s even faster as they get better offers somewhere else.

The climate is not enviting, the treatmeant not enviting, what is the value ??

Non Type Rated 330 Dec

Hi guys any of you in KAL came in with 320 experience for the NTR program.

How as the interview and training?

How did KAL treat you in training?

Hope to get some input as I have only all bad stuff about local KAL pilots treating expats...

Regards

There's a little triangle some place around here in this Forum with the word "search". Click on it.
Write "KAL" inside the square that pops up there, click, and then....WOW! You'd be surprised on how much information you'll got! Unfortunately 90% true...

Sigh, brown nosers will always be around. What ever happened to the mexican with the saddam hussein look who was forever trying to get selected as LCP? All wannabes trying to teach others how to fly using whatever obsolete and archaic stuff they learnt from their previous airrlines. The guys from the sandpit who taught the koreans " management tricks "; screwing us all with the ideas of " self studying " online recurrent courses on our own time and expenses. What a group of whores?

agency

What is the better (UK/Europe) agency to apply through ?

Can you only get a commuting roster out of 1 of their 'bases' (AMS, CDG, FRA, LHR for me) or can you get it out of BRU too ? What would it look like ?

Cheers

NTR 330 Captain

QAR -

As a recently hired A-330 Captain coming from an A-320 background, I will be happy to answer your questions. My experience has been good, and I can give you some idea what it's like here. If you would like some recent and specific info, feel free to send me a PM.

330 Sim Eval

The 330 sim eval was pretty straightforward. As a NTR or zero flight time guy, the profile is set. Use whatever procedures you are familiar with - I used straight Airbus procedures. Ground procedures are normal - start, taxi and takeoff from ICN. Fly SID and then get some vectors (hand flying - do some turns, etc getting comfortable with the a/c). First approach is visual. Second is Non-precision VOR 33R. You'll start out high (7000') and have to work to get down and stabilized. My evaluator briefed us on configuration altitudes, and to use selected approach vice fully managed. Next was v1 cut and s.e. ils. Last item was rejected taeoff and evacuation. There are questions that can be asked - when will you cross XX latitude or longitude for example - to see if you are familiar with some of the specifics of this FMGC. They may also ask ecam/qrh questions as you accomplish the procedures. As always, there are some good IP's and some not so good. Hope for the former. Good Luck.

For nothing

Dear Colleagues,

Recently some Skippers made the way to Seoul and spent some precious time for nothing there.

They had to learn that they are not accepted because of some physical condition that ecxludes them for a first class medical in Korea but not in US, CA, EU and some other Aviation Authorities. We are talking about the Laser surgery here. A few years back they started with that and even disqualified people who had worked there before but have had a Laser surgery earlier. Same if You have Gall Stones, get rid of them and then you are eligable.

The pitty is that the Agents (should) know about it and tried if the Guy slicks thru and the commission is achieved. It is a conflict of interest I would rather say.

Just some heads up for the rest of us, nothing changed. Look how often you see the Adverts from all Agents here to grab some Pilots and place them there despite the shortcomings they know. How do you call such People ????

Laser

Ric and all others: It was just recently when a Pilot hwo thought that KAL is a good option learned it the hard way again: He was there for screening and later the Agent told him he was not accepted.

As I wrote before: Laser surgery raises a warning flag and they dismissed a few guý´s a few years back after they where employed. On the other side a while back all Korean Fire Fighters got a Laser surgery to make the independant from spectacles and contact lenses..... So the "Counrty" Korea know´s the proceedure for sure but it is not accepted in all area´s.

If you have queries then call the medical department before you make your way to there and waste a week vaccation to learn later: Not suitable.

To get a committment from any Korean would be difficult as well, then she/he has to take on responsibility and that can be expensive for the individual, it can cost the career. So Good luck, I am looking elsewhere now.

Fly safe and land happy

Drewteh- please do some work first!

Dear young man,I noticed that, you are simply writing on different forums asking for advice about hiring.

Other fellow ppruner's,they have already adviced you and I will as well: Please read the forums carefully...if you do then you will find out, that you should try to apply for LCC /turboprop airlines since you are a freshly graduated pilot.

Airlines such as Korean, air Japan,AHK etc are only looking for experienced jet pilots.

Stop asking the same question....do some homework-read-be keen!!!

My advice

Korean Air sued for hiring foreign pilots
By Lee Hyo-sik

Korean Air, the nation’s largest flagship carrier, has been sued by its pilot union over its hiring of foreign pilots.

The Korean Air Flight Crew Union is claiming that the company is illegally employing nearly 400 non-Korean pilots as non-regular workers via job placement agencies overseas, violating the domestic law concerning the rights of dispatched workers. It demands the firm hire foreign crews as regular employees.

But the airline argues there is nothing wrong with its hiring system, saying it was cleared of the same charge brought by the union in 2003. It also says it needs to hire foreign pilots on a contract basis to more flexibly manage its workforce in accordance with economic cycles.

The Seoul Southern District Labor Office said Thursday that it is currently reviewing a complaint filed by unionized workers of Korean Air, adding it will thoroughly look into the case before deciding whether to refer it to the prosecution or not.

On Dec. 31, the union complained to the labor office about the company’s hiring practice of foreign pilots, saying a pilot is not one of the 32 occupations that are allowed to be outsourced under the “Dispatched Workers’ Protection Law.” But the airline employs foreign pilots on a contract basis through eight employment agencies abroad, it said.

Those who violated the law are subject up to three years in prison or a fine of 20 million won.

“Even though Korean Air is not allowed to employ non-regular pilots under the law, it has continued to do so via foreign job placement agencies for years. It should have hired temporary foreign pilots that have worked for two years as regulars ones. But it has not,” said Park Byoung-lyoul, secretary general of the Korean Air Flight Crew Union.

Korean Air currently has 396 non-Korean pilots on its payroll, all on a temporary basis. They account for 15.5 percent of the company’s total 2,550. They usually sign a 5-year contract and receive wages from employment agencies. But flight schedules, training, holidays and other work-related matters are supervised by Korean Air.

Korea’s other flagship carrier Asiana Airlines employs 121 foreign pilots in the same way as its larger competitor.

The secretary general said foreign pilots receive higher wages than Korean unionized pilots, adding they are not held responsible for their work behavior as they are not subject to Korean Air’s internal disciplinary rules.

However, Korean Air flatly dismisses the pilot union’s claims, insisting its hiring system of foreign pilots is not subject to the Dispatched Workers’ Protection Law because job placement agencies are registered overseas.

“The law applies only to employment agents registered here. In 2003, the pilot union filed the same complaint to the labor office, which referred the case to the prosecution. But the prosecutors decided not to go forward with it because the job placement agencies were based in foreign countries,” a Korean Air spokesman said.

The spokesman also rejected the union’s claim that foreign pilots receive higher wages and greater welfare benefits, saying the unionized Korean pilots are actually treated better than their foreign counterparts.

“We cannot simply say that someone is better off than another just because he or she gets larger paychecks. We also need to take other monetary and non-monetary benefits into account. All together, unionized domestic pilots enjoy much better conditions,” he said.

The spokesman then said the hiring of foreign pilots on a non-regular basis helps secure job security for Korean pilots.

“The company can let temporary workers go when the economy goes bad, meaning we can more flexibly manage our workforce if foreign pilots are hired as non-regulars. It is much harder to lay off regular unionized workers.”

Hi,

appart from the useful previous post, I know about the 9 consecutive days off + up to 3 travel days (2 for 737) + 2 annual leave days = 13/14 days off in a row each month, but also I would like to know how many working days can I expect? 13/14 days off, 16 working days?? Is that correct? of course with some days off in between. And you report to rostering the days you want to be off, and they allocate accordingly your working days? How do they schedule you for your commuting home? Next available flight to your home base? I heard from a captain who worked for KAL in the 737 that he used to work around 10 days each month. Anyone who can contrast my info?

Work Days/Days Off

Free Wings -

The rotation is pretty easy. You tell the scheduler what days you want to travel home and back to work and they schedule you.

The 9 days off plus 2-3 travel days depending on fleet) is every month. You decide when to use the vacation days. You can use up to 7 vacation days with a block of 9 days off - no more than 16 consecutive days off (plus travel days). That being said, you need to be in Seoul/available to work for at least 11 days per month. Any less an you will be docked.

It is up to you to decide when and how to use those days off, and it is up to you to track how many you have used, etc. You get 24 vacation days per year, and it is tallied at the end of the year.

Let me know if you have any more questions about the schedule.

Hi guys,
So I finished about reading the whole topic now and it is almost clear except some small parts.
First of all, I work in Europe in an airline for 737NG's for the last 4 years and i have 4000 hours total and almost 3500+ hours on this type.
I will be upgraded in about one year but things have changed in life.
things with company are ok but i want to move to Asia.
So this will be the decesion of my life and i want to be sure.
I read things about KAL some say good and some say like hell there.
The cultural differences don't affect me that much as the country i am in has similar thoughts.
But if i try KAL that means i'll need some free time and that leads me to leave the company for the application process so there will be no turning back for me.
So i really need some advice and assist from some experienced ones about the things in Korea.
All in all i like to apply for the FO pos in 737 fleet
Here are the things i don't know,
Which agency to use
how long does the whole hiring process takes (including med check, interview and etc.)
how safe is the job? should i expect to get fired in no time?
etc. etc.
So sorry to take your time but please pm me about anything you want to say about KAL as i desperately need some advice
I had some time in airline business but when it comes to apply for a new job i'm even worse than a new grad rookie
Thanks again,
Fly safe
