Issues?

OK, I left KAL many suns ago but I do remember it was a great commuting contract. In those days we got first class travel without question and the expat pilots were treated fine by the ground staff. Things deteriorated after 2004 as more expats came in; with the weakening USD, the bosses thought the expats are the surest and cheapest way to break the back of the pilots' union.........they suceeded as expats began to accept the ****ty ways of doing things. The newer Alteons guys also connived to teach pesky expats a lesson .

In line operations, things seem OK until **** hits the fan when you have to fly " solo ." The local wonder boys either freeze or get tongue tied with ATC; or worser still, get you into knots with the ATC. In non normal situation if they fail to understand your actions they get into satcom conversation solely in korean language with maintenance/operations, all the time undermining your position as commander.

I believe from conversations with colleagues still there that the situation has gone worse with lots of newer expats eager to brown nose; now you have to spend your own time and expenses doing on line courses, no chance of ad hoc DH travel if there are no bussiness or ey seats available.

Having said that, if you are furloughed or a con artist wannabe from some dodgy operation trying your luck to get into the " big " league, KAL is a great place to get in. Always worth a try!

the NASA medical

I've read this entire forum on KAL. I'm interested in the B777 NTR captain program, having extensive B757/767 experience. I have one question.

I'm 52 and after many years in aviation I have some hearing loss. The FAA medical has got to be the easiest in the world, and they don't really care. But I've applied for some overseas airlines, and saw eyebrows raised when they looked at my audiology test results. Is it even worth trying at KAL?

Medical

Just went through the KAL interview process. Medical is not easy, but don't no hearing requirment. All the captain interviewies I stayed in touch with were not offerd jobs for one reason or another, me included. I wouldn't have botherd to go over had I known how they operated. 1K down the drain in expenses.

Don't be offended but in all fairness to your hearing, did you mean to write/type that you don't know of a hearing requirement, or are you trying to say that you were unsuccessful but not because of [the] hearing requirement? In either case, hopefully your Korean interviewers had less trouble comprehending you than I did reading your post. Best of luck to you back home.

They do have an audiology test. I'm not sure how strict they are, but I have seen captains with hearing aids.

If it helps: You sit in a both, headset on, clicker in hand. Three tones (beep beep beep) of one freq are played at random intervals and decreasing volume. Click after each set of three. They check five frequencies. First left ear, then right.

If you are a,
  • current A330 Captain at KAL, and
  • are either Canadian or American (cultural similarity), and
  • joined KAL as a DEC A330 Captain (didn't join as A320/A340 pilot then get TR'd),

please PM me if you'll be comfortable answering some questions from someone interested in joining KAL. Thanks in advance.

That is the recent strategy to undermine the effort to locate Pilots. Let about 30 to 40 fly in for Screening and Interview. After they are back home again they are being told not employment. up to 90% failure rate during the screening and later comes the line training, another gamble. Not worth to give a week of vaccation away and have expenses to be told: NO.

Las Vegas in Job search at this stage, recently I have seen some Korean Pilots in China looking for a greener pasture, does that not tell you something?

Fly safe and land happy

Patterns:- roster is generated around your requested days off

Destinations:- go to the KAL website Korean Air and look under the tab of travel planning. Mostly SE Asia, Oceania, China, Japan. When you look at flights it will tell you what equipment operates on that route.

Salary:- Once checked to line $11,432. Whilst under training (approx. 3 months) $7732. Overtime $125ph for hours over 65 pcm. All figures are after Korean taxes have been paid.

You have to be a senior Korean pilot to even look at the A380, let alone get on the roster.

That may change, since word on the street is that all of the B744 pilots KAL sent to Toulouse for A380 school washed out. No A330 pilots were sent - that would be silly.

I keep hearing this rumour... Toulouse Airbus training is famous for being very relaxed and laid back. These guys must have been completely untrainable for them to give up and send them back.

Thumbs down Korean Horror Story

I have a good friend that just failed the interview procedure, from his description of the type of rules etc, korean looks like its more problematic than worthwhile, it seems that a few years ago they crashed so many aircraft that the faa told them they were about to be banned from us airspace this has made them paranoid, before you even think about it best talk to someone who is either in or has been.
