pltemrah,

I don't have much experience in the airline industry, (just about a year), but I think you should wait for the upgrade. I believe Korean Air doesn't offer upgrades to expats, so you are looking at staying right seat for many years to come.

Once a captain, the contract world looks better.

Maybsav8,

thanks for the info, is pretty much all I needed to know. I would take all my days off consecutive, including my 2 annual days off/month, making that 13 days off per month (9+2+2). how I understand it, I tell the scheduler the dates for the commuting, back and forth, and they schedule me, but then for how long I have to be in Seoul? 18 days? to complete a whole month?
As another colleague just asked, I would like to know if things go fine, is it a safe job?
Last further question: is hand-fly allowed, or normally accepted in the procedures of the company?

Thanks for the answers!!

Days Off/Hand Flying

Freewings -

The limit is...no less than 11 days at work. That means available to fly. Put another way, it is spelled out as this: no more than 16 days off at home (or wherever) plus 3 days travel. That adds up to 19 days free from work, leaving 11 days for work in a 30 day month. It's up to you how you use your days.

As for hand-flying - it is allowed, and even required on your check ride. That being said, I don't think there is a lot of hand flying. Training is mostly aimed at flying for a couple thousand feet, then autopilot until established on final. That's what I see anyway.

Most captains I fly with - it's A/P on at 400' and off again at 1500' on approach. That is, unless it's "iffy" (less than 1sm vis or 800foot ceiling) then it's autoland.

On the 737, they also sent out a memo saying no more than 14 days off/month including travel days. That means you can only take your leave days (9) and your vacation days (2) at the same time. The vacation days have basically become leave days.

Hello guys,
So i just needed to ask it again.
All i ask is how safe the job is. I mean if you stay low, do No harm and just do your job Will they still be willing to fire you with the first chance they got.
And how long does the whole hiring process take around a month? Or two?
Please try to help me out.
Thanks all

Getting a job with the minimum requirement.

B737NG First Officers
Rated
•B737NG Type Rating
•Operated on type within 1 year
•300+ hours on type
•1,000+ hours Airline Transport
•Max age < 44 years (before turning 45)
•2+ year Degree/Diploma (not pilot license)

What are my chances with getting the KE F/O position in 737NG
with the minimum requirement?
(So it would be something like:
a) 1250 TT
b) 300 or 500hr on type
c) 1000 Airline Transport)

What was the lowest requirement that your fellow pilot had
for the KE F/O positions?

KE seems to have pretty low requirement for what it's offering.

Yes. Contact NASA, and ask for the brief on the medical for Astronaut.

I beleive it's the same form KAL use.

NiceCB

I was there last week, the whole process was as discussed in this thread earlier. You get there you appear for Sim, Personality test, Medical and Interview. You will have to pass the sim before you can appear for medical or interview. Some people had personality test first, some had it on the last day.

On the 330 fleet, all 4 candidates were asked to go in the sim one at a time with examiner working both as PNF/PM and Examiner from right seat/left seat. In 330 all but one guy made it through the process.

Medical is very intense, lots of tests and some of the guys were asked to repeat their blood test and three had to take Glucose Tolerance Test the next day. The stress test is not that bad, but there were a lot of eye tests. Almost everyone in the morning had high bp, but the nurses there helped you calm down and bp was back to normal. There is normal EKG and EEG. For ENT and dental you will go to INHA University hospital.

Overall it was great experience; everyone in Korean Air and at the Hyatt Crew Lounge was more than friendly. Now the waiting for the results, I was told it can take 3-4 weeks!

To guys who are commuting... I would appreciate your clarification regarding the following:

- How many days OFF (Consecutive) exactly one can expect? (9+2+3) for Captains? my question should be: is it true?

- Ticketing: Only 6 tickets (ID 90 + 50) are available for the whole year?

- Was there any Pay review during your experience?

Many thanks

1) Expect 11 days (9+2), although you can take say as an example 8 days on a month and 14 on the next one. The key thing is; you have to work at least 11 days per month to make the monthly wage. On top of that you have another 3 days as travelling days. Those numbers are for the widebody fleet. B737 might be a little bit different.
2) 4 reserved tickets (for yourself and family members) free of charge (you pay only the taxes) on the Korean Air network plus endless ZED tickets with several others airlines.
3)Yes

1,6%

Guy´s, the review of the pay in three years was 1,6% payrise. The devaluation of the currency you are paid in was this year over 12%.... so what??

The commute is true and quiete stable in my over 10 years expirience but I would not go there anymore now. Sorry to sound odd but where is the point for a F/O to go there and the upgrade is non existent? some guy´s been told go somewhere else and when you are Captain come back.... why should you?

The contract say´s minimum working is 10 days... counting 10 is not 11 as demanded by Administration..... so the interpretation of commuting day´s / travel day´s can change tomorrow. Do not tell me that you have the commute in the contract, you have also in the contract that your 4 free tickets per year are FOC- confirmed Y, stby C. Reality is you and your Family are off-loaded at any station if the plane is unexpected full....

If you are Jobless: Go for it, if you have a Job: stay away because you have not finished the training.... read the previous pages and see the warning. Don´t cry later, it is too late then. Surprise line checks and reporting system are just two tools to make you spring loaded all time.

Ask yourself why even National KAL Pilots are leaving and looking abroad... because it must be "heaven" to have have basic 10 days off per month.

Fly safe and land happy

Hello Everyone

I would like to ask the question too fellow First Officers

Can someone confirm the contract each month provides for 9 + 3 + 2 giving a total of 14 dys off each month.

Can this be backed up by getting last 14 days of the month off and first 14 days of the month off , providing up too 28 days off and then go back to work for basically the next month.

In effect month on to month off.

I was told it is 8100 USD each month, is that basic pay or can I expect more due flight pay as well.

best and kind regards

YR

KAL wannabes, heed the words of B737NG. The good days are gone. The novelty of kimchi, poshintang and free meal tickets will soon wear off and you will be faced with the stark reality of a very hostile environment. It's always funny to see expats with wads of greenback rushing to take the 7:20 pm hotel shuttle bus to the dispatch office to grab the dinner coupons much to the sneering disgust of the local chaps busy with their flight planning chores.

Are folks able to start and end trips in a out base? LAX or ORD? Or do you originate always from INC? (777's or 744's I mean)

Thanks

Can one schedule on end of the month off followed by the begining of the next...thus creating a longer "away" time.

Also can anyone provide typical 37 routes /schedule for Captains

Regards

Korean Air A330 capatains commuting

Hy everybody,

Does anyone know about Korean Air a320 pilots that were hired as NTR captains for the a330 positions?
How much is the salary? I´ve heard that the trainning is very demanding and a lot of good pilots had failed. Is it true? How much is the type rating for the 330 coming from the 320´s?

Thanks for your help.
