thanks for the info capt. chambo. appreciate it...

this all sounds very interesting. i work for an asian airline and i know what the cultures are like so i think it should not be a problem fitting in...

another question: are the average hrs per month around 55hrs and how often does one do overtime?

thanks again

Why does everybody seem to dislike working for Korean.

General opinion seems to be many Korean pilots are unfriendly to foreigners and make life their both solitary and unpleasant.

Info on Korean Air

Hello! all,
I need some info on Korean Air's B777 expat captains pay package and working conditions. Additionally is it possible to be based in Korea permanently with a spouse or is commuting necessary ?
Thank you for your time.

EKBemused:

Not sure if jetjoker is speaking from experience or not. If you want some factual details PM me. We probably have some mutual EK friends.

Regarding living in Korea, it can't be done but many foreign KAL pilots do live within short commute to Seoul.

I think that most of us are very happy working for KAL, maybe that´s the reason you can´t read much here in this forum about us ... you´ll find us in any bar talking about anything else than the usual PPrune complains about failed pilots which were not willing to accept the rules here at KAL.
I really can ensure that if one is willing to play their game, one has a really easy and nice life, ... also in Seoul with the locals!!!

So, ... for those who have interest in working here: keep going ... it´s great opportunity!

A great opportunity to be in a big fireball of nuclear annihilation once the madmen in the south and north of the peninsula miscalculate in the dangerous game of " face " and brinksmanship, helped in part by the great U of Ass A.

I think....

Woldo, You might think for yourself.... and just to make it clear: I did not fail any screening or Interview at KAL or had a unscheduled line check or ever a FOQA. Now you make it work for you but there others who do not take all the shortcomings of the past: No payrise despite the profit postet, downgrade of the commute to PR class only, even if there are no passenger in First, except to Korean Nationals of course. Overtime pay? scheduling practice? Letter from Admin belitteling you that you are "subject to punishment", treatment of the BIUSA Pilots some could change Agents, some not anymore unequal treatment, and and and ... you need a few more?

Fly safe and land happy, Merry Christmas

Woldo is correct when he says "...willing to play their game". Problem is, you don't know what the game really entails until you show up and experience it first hand. Many have spent thousands on a type rating just to get the interview/job and then realize that the "game" played at KAL is like no other airline/job they have ever had, and a game they don't enjoy.

I will simply say that I have never heard a pilot (myself included) characterize flying at KAL as being "fun".

KAL A330 Sim Eval Profile

Hello any KAL 330 drivers.

Seeking any input on A330 Sim Eval. I was told KAL has som "non standard" from Airbus procedures. Was interested in how non-standard they get? Due to visit them in Jan.

Appreciate any feedback.

That's pretty low for a 744! Considering some A320 Capt's make more than that avg in China... And that's USD after taxes...

If you like to gamble you could give this job a try...but remember that the odds of passing the screening and surviving through the training are against you.

If you are lucky enough to make it through, then you will be part of a system where the Company will motivate you by pressure. They will organise the training, checking and examining to be spread along the year so there will always be something to be preparing for.

And don't forget their latest tool to exercise more pressure on you, the unscheduled check. It will make you hate what you used to love, flying.

It used to be a good job a few years back.. I have been told, but with the Koreans dislike for foreigners and now having more to say how things are done have changed live at KAL to not be pleasant at all. The expats in the office are just sitting there like puppets asked by KAL management to make the foreigners believe the company cares...fools!

KAL expat in management.

The water boy? Hatchet man?

Ha ha ha, many years ago when I was driving the MD 11's and on good terms with the KAL equivalent of a DFO we had dinner somewhere in HNL with some B777 chappie from the third world. The KAL DFO was trying to cajole the 777 chap to take up training and get into the management as an expat representative...The DFO was a little tipsy; I had a few drinks but I guessed I was sober enough to hear a gem of a reply from that 777 chap. He told the Korean DFO this..." if I join the management I will definitely be used to screw my fellows pilots, no thank you. " The DFO either did not understand what was said or pretended not to hear or really more drunk than he looked but he just burst out laughing making some lewd remarks about beer bottle up the six! The night ended up with some ribald jokes but nothing untoward happened to the upstart.

So nothing has changed, the expat management types are just that. Hatchet men screwing fellow pilots covertly with sweet words, nebulous proposals which never see the light of the day, and outright bullying for those who they think could be treaded on.

nothing untoward?

I think not; I think someone got some checker to screw him good. Must be the chap who masterminded the covert caucus letter thingy to screw the local checkers. The MD11 rated DFO pr MVP flt ops knew about the whole thingy and got rid of some local checkers. The 777 chappie you alluded to thought the whole thingy was covert but me thinks some of his fellow countrymen ratted on him. Mot very smart imho.
