For the Talair pilots
Taken at Goroka in 1982, some of Talairs fleet. On the far right there is a Porter, silver with orange rudder. Did that belong to Talair?

Yes, this was a piston-powered Porter that Talair acquired from Wirui Air Services (Catholic Mission Wewak) in some sort of horse-trading deal. No doubt Torres would recall the details.
As I recall it was being used for an endorsement when it suffered some sort of mishap, and then spent many years sitting by the fence. There were plans to rebuild it and install a PT6, but it just never seemed to happen.

Thanks for the piccy of Kaintiba Storchpilot.
That place was one of the first Kerema area strips that I was checked into by Luk V back in 1990 when I was with Douglas Airways.
I remember that after about four 'circuits' in the Islander with Luk he got out and told me to do several by myself. By that time it seemed that half the village had turned out to watch! Struck me at the time as being rather odd.
Anyone got any piccies of Kamina?

The piston Porter was traded with the Catholic Mission for an overhauled IO520 for one of their C206's. The Catholics got the better of that deal!
I don't think the Piston Porter was ever involved in an incident or accident - it never spent long enough in the air! It had the same engine as the Queenair from memory, however engine cooling was a problem - probably due to lack of forward speed!
Then it became a standing parts inventory for the Turbine Porter everytime that aircraft was involved in an accident.
I'm sure it was the Turbine Porter that was damaged - ground looped - at Karimui doing endorsement training, MB in command! But I may be wrong.

Silly Old Git
Think you may be right about MP . I heard it was the pisstin Porter Peter Fogs under training?
It would take enormous skill to groundloop a Porter
Methinks something else was being attempted

Correct - MB was endorsing Fogs at the time. Reputed/alleged MB had a few "stiff ones" for breakkie, to see him through the day!
I'm unsure now whether it was the Piston Porter or Turbine Porter. Vaguely recall seeing a photo of a legless Piston Porter in Jim Sinclair's book, so it may have been the Piston Porter. I know it only flew a total 39 hours with Talair.

So, how is old P.F. travelling these days? Anyone know? Saw him very white faced in the hangar after his quick reflexes got him and another, out of a training incident much later.. Not without some scratches along the belly tho.

Foggy Tales
Last ran into Foggs in the sandpit when he was with EVA on the 744. That would be late 90s prior to him heading back to Vila to work on his tan and do the odd weekly flight. He rocked into town with a wad of "ambergris"... em wanem samting I hear you say?
Well it is actually sperm whale vomit that is a result of eating giant squid then regurgitating the black ink sack. This very smelly conglomeration then floats on the sea and is hardened by the sun, the smell goes away and it becomes a hard waxy substance that is very expensive/kg and used in the perfume industry to enhance the life of the scent in expensive perfumes.
So Foggs and I with ambergris in tow did a round of some of the major perfume suppliers in town to flog the product and get some drinking money, which led to a memory loss as to what happened next. It was a long way from the Talair pilot house in West Goroka where we had seen each other the last time. I believe he is still in Vanuatu.

I think you've got me with that one, SP!
The only mission strip I can remember with a dog leg and a slope like that was one located west of Madang (I can't remember its name), but the picture doesn't look quite right for it to be that one. The dogleg on that strip occurred right at the top of the first slope and you had to know it was there and be ready to apply rudder to change the direction of your landing roll, otherwise you would run off the side of the strip when you rolled over the crest!

Wamuna, or a name similar to that? West-northwest of Madang.
It claimed a Talair Islander once (the one that the RAAF slung beneath a Chinook, but subsequently dropped in the Bena Gap).

Chimbu Warrior - Called Wanima. It seems you could see the doglegs on approach, but not any more while landing.
Hereīs another one, this time on final.
