Sorry for the thread drift but I figure this is the best place to ask. The Queensland Air Museum has acquired the hulk of a Cessna 402 which is going to be brought up to static display standard by students of QAM's Youth Training Scheme. It turns out that the aeroplane has a bit of PNG history so I'm hoping that the denizens of this forum will have numerous photos and anecdotes relating to:

VH-ELP
P2-ELP
P2-GKF
VH-END
VH-NQC

All the one aeroplane. Any info much appreciated.

P2-GKF

Fris, I remember GKF as one of the better 402's Talair had. I believe it also spent some time in the Solomons on lease to Solair after they ran out of Queenairs, but was on the Australian register (as VH-END) during that time.

It will be the 3rd aircraft that I have flown that is now in the QAM. Gettin' old.

Hello , some more trivia on the rego VH-END. This was associated with a Beech Baron,D55 which lived in the Skywest hangar in Townsville in 1990.

My log book sez VH -ELP was a 402 based in Lae TPNG with Mac air in 1973
Standard Mac Air livery as I recall all white and you should be able to find a green stripe here and there

Also ,VH GKF was a C185 I flew for Talair in 1971 out of Mendi

QAM Cessna 402

Thanks to everyone who responded. It seems that there aren't a lot of photos of the aeroplane in any of its identities. If anyone can come up with a photo it may determine how the aeroplane is repainted. It has been suggested that she would make a fine tribute to the END of Talair.

Regards

Thanks Tinny

I reckon that colour scheme might be the front runner. I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier but it turns out that there are a couple of photos of P2-GKF in Balus 2 & 3. What we will need next is a really good image of the chimbu warrior (that's the logo not the PPRuNer). Anyone got an image larger than the one inside the dust jacket of Balus?

Regards

Tinny that's not fair...I never flew blindfolded

Some GREAT video there...brings back many fond memories.

More here.

Although to balance up life in the highlands, in particular, but most of PNG is similar...plenty of highlander tribal fighting goes on in the settlements in Moresby...highway robbery is endemic.

Now I'm confused.

The C402 Bobby Gibbes pranged at Brugham - wasn't that P2-GKF????

P2-ELP came from M@cair so I guess the registration may have been recycled?

It would be a great tribute if Fris were successful in having the C402 painted in the old Talair colours!! He is also looking for a a high definition image of Dennis and his pogo stick (the Chimbu warrior).

Anyone able to assist?

Third photo in Tinnie's post - Peter Thompson hanging out the window and Roger Real?
