Hey Bill, thanks for that… Unfortunately only driven through Wapenamanda a couple of times, beautiful little place, very scenic, quiet and has a peaceful feeling, Mt Aikosa 9500ft just North. Chosen as my location for the way it rolls off the tongue and it’s a hell of a lot more romantic sounding that that raskol town a few miles south east where I currently reside!!

Maps of PNG

Hi. Iīm new to this thread, but have enjoyed reading a lot of the 120 pages. I was born and partly grew up in PNG and in that way also with aviation there. Lots of names and places came back to the old(er getting) brain.
Iīm trying to retrace a flightpath. My father was taking part in a survey flight into the area of Mt. Michael, Agotu and further on into the Gimi and along a part of the Purari River in 1959. Are there any good maps of PNG available somewhere. I have seen some, which seem to have been made by the Australian Army. I would apreciate any comments.

Storchpilot... you're probably referring to the TPC series charts (1:500,000). Excellent charts, provided you can fold them up enough for easy use in a small, cramped cockpit - and further provided you don't forget the scale when using your 1:1,000,000 scale ruler to check distances.

TPC charts for PNG seem to be few and far between these days. Seems there was a bit of a dispute between the Oz military, who produce the charts, and the PNG National Mapping Bureau, who re-produced them. Not sure about the current situation but my understanding is that it's in the too-hard basket at the National Mapping Bureau.

Don't know where else you'll get your hands on them as the blokes who have a complete set, won't part with them at any price.

You might find that the JOG series charts (1:250,000 scale) are still available for all those areas, but you might need a few of them to cover all the areas of your interest. There's also the T-601 series (1:100,000) that may also be still available from the NMB but, again, you'd need quite a few of them to cover all the areas of your interest.

Chart prices used to be in the order of about K20 per T-601 and something like K30 per JOG chart. You'd have to check with the NMB directly, for up to date information, but they don't answer e-mail. I don't have a phone number for them off hand but perhaps someone else, with a PNG phone book handy, might look it up for you - under the Dept. of Lands and Physical Planning, I think it is.

Storchpilot.........

Some good old 1:250,000 maps are available at no cost on the internet. Check out: New Guinea AMS Topographic Maps - Perry-Castaeda Map Collection - UT Library Online

Season's Greetings.

Thumbs up

Wow thanks for a lot of information OzExpat and SIUYA, I really appreciate that!!!
Concerning one comment....in the too-hard basket...sounds familiar, although I havnīt been in PNG for nearly 20 years. But at the time I lived there and especially during the two later visits, this really applied to a lot of things . A pity really for such a beautiful (and long time ago wonderful) place. But on the other hand the very tiny country I live in, in the middle of Europe also reminds me more and more of PNG. If you need to get anything done you either need wantoks or other relations. Presents or other bribes may also help. Or a wantok who is mightier and has more power than the guy you need something from.
Regarding the NMB and the Dept. of Lands....heard enough about them to. It seems you have to pesonally be very persistent to get something off them. Does anybody think it would be possible to get maps directly from the Oz military.....

Just got back in from work(-10°C, heavy snowfall)...Iīm a bit jealous of you guys on the southern hemisphere. I donīt even want to know what the temps are. At least we might be having a white Christmas.
Anyway thanks again and Seasons Greetings to you too.

Oz military no longer sell any topo charts to Joe Public. Don't quote me, but it may be due to liability issues (no regular amendment cycle, Joe Public doesn't have access to amendment data).
Under ICAO, each State is responsible for producing their own WACs. PNG CAA stopped doing so sometime between independance and now.
NMB were importing the TPC etc from Oz when they had access to them.
Pilots going to PNG CAA for charts were directed to NMB. When NMB stopped getting Oz mil charts, they told the pilots "NOGAT". No explanation why (maybe NMB didn't know why). Word didn't get back to CAA that NMB weren't getting the Oz mil charts, so nothing was done about the problem for a while. I don't know what the state of play is now, but I believe that aerial mapping was commenced under a foreign aid program in about 2007 with a view to restarting the production of WAC.
The answer to the problem is for PNG CAA to start producing WAC in accordance with their international obligations, be that via their own means or international assistance.

I was informed quite some time ago by a PNG based ppruner that whilst the TPC maps were 'sold out' and no longer available there were still a few ONC (1;1,000,000 ie same scale as WAC) charts around.

I have no idea if this is still the case. Still have my set, tattered and grubby!

A variation on the theme. This is the sticker which appeared on Cessna 337 P2-ELO.

So it seems that maybe in the near future pilots in PNG may have to download "old" maps from the website at University of Texas (thanks for the link SIUYA, they are good), print them out and fly with them. Unfortunately there are some "white" areas on those maps, and some where no topograhical data was available. That mixed with the weather and visibility in the highlands....

Folks managed to fly into rocks even when we had good topo maps
The map, neatly folded and placed on the instrument panel coaming, was usually the first thing to arrive at the scene of an accident

Who Needs A Map??

Talking of maps....I remember flying a Talair Baron alone from Hoskins to Lae in the early 80's, with a nicely folded WAC chart on the right hand seat. (I think it may have been for another "company sponsored" gathering at the Lae Dero Club).

Somewhere approaching Cape Gloucester the edge of the map slipped under the door sill and within seconds my sole means of navigation had disappeared out of the a/c and was wafting it's way down to West New Britain. So with a bit of dead reckoning and driven by a thirsty disposition I navigated my way successfully to a much appreciated beverage.

So who needs a map when driven by primeval instincts??

Ah the Wren 460, aka a C182 with fins! Lots of things to bump into during loading and unloading.

It predated me in PNG (I think), but I believe now lives in Victoria.

yep VH-RAJ, named after Ray Jaensch, former chief pilot of Lutheran Mission Aviation, who died in an aircraft accident in 1964 (DO27).

Mista Mausgras, as some people called the liklik balus still lives in Victoria. She was completely overhauled and is in mint condition and very well looked after by her owner.

Yes she was on the market for some time, but the owner has decided to keep her.

On the occasion this image was taken (1969), she was coming in over Ponampa, which didnīt have an airstrip at that time, for an airdrop (note missing door on right side).
We were living on that station at the time and had run out of toiletpaper. The roads to Ponampa were mostly impassable in the rainy season, so airdrops in those times were the only possibility to get badly needed articles. So somebody sewed a whole carton of toiletpaper rolls into a number of bags, took the door out of the wren and kicked the whole pile of bags out of that door during a low pass over the station. Once airborne, the toiletpaper, having hardly any weight and no momentum (I think thatīs the word), floated smoothly strait down into one hell of a big puddle (rainy season). I remember us stacking the wet rolls around the stove in the kitchen for drying......

Merry Christmas to everybody here

News just in of an accident this morning. Well known PNG pilot involved.

Unconfirmed reports of fatalities. Pilot survived and should be ok.

Sad news.

Small operation based in Morobe flying out of Nadzab. Pilot is the owner and as far as I know no other pilots fly for him.
