I'm not sure I see any possibility for Russia to win a lot in this whole mess. I think Putin miscalculated the unity of the 'West' and now has the problem how to get out of this without losing face. |
Why am I reminded of Hitler’s annexation of the Sudetenland in 1938 and subsequent takeover of all of Czechoslovakia.
Supposedly justified as being to protect the German minority of the population. Also the US and others have raised the possibility of the Russians faking a trans-border attack supposedly by the Ukraine into Russia to be used as a justification for Russia to invade Ukraine . Did not Hitler do the exact same thing to “Justify” the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939? |

Did not Hitler do the exact same thing to “Justify” the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939? the Soviets did the same a few months later, called the shelling of Mainila where the Soviet artillery shelled their own troops but the Soviets claimed that the shots were fired from Finland and so began the winter war. |
Willing to bet all those posting about impending invasions and war with Russia are the same people worried about climate change and are queuing up for their 4th booster.
it’s theatre - pure distraction. |

Well if Putin thought it was all going to ramp up to ww 3, he wouldn’t have bothered collecting his yacht.

Does Ukraine have any capability to counter-strike? Have they air assets that could [probably suicidally] attack Moscow?
Probably not, but once any invasion gets under way, the temptation to hit back [rather than just defend] must surely be a consideration. |

Probably not, but once any invasion gets under way, the temptation to hit back [rather than just defend] must surely be a consideration. I doubt they'd even be able to cross the border. |
But you could have folks positioned in Moscow as well as other Russian cities and the rear ready to kick off if war is announced, it would bring it home to them as well as possibly disrupting road rail and power infrastructure.

CBS now reporting Russian artillery now moving into attack positions.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-...nkId=152198269 Speculation it will all kick off on Wednesday. |

I'm also worried because an accident/misunderstanding could easily lead to escalation looking at the high tensions. I hope everyone is aware and reflects in each move what's at stake. |
The Duma, Russia's parliament, will vote on Tuesday to decide whether to ask President Vladimir Putin to recognise two Russian-backed breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as independent, according to the speaker of the Duma lower house.

Suggestions in the press that Putin might not attack Ukraine for “months”.
But that seems to ignore the weather/terrain issue both in the Pinsk marshes and across Ukraine - “Rasputitsa” - which would, if not making an attack impossible, would greatly aid Ukrainian defence until next winter. Can Putin keep effectively his entire army deployed in the west, including all those sent from the Far East region on exercise in Belarus? And, of course, it provides more months for allies to ship more modern equipment to the Ukraine and train their forces in its use. https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ukraine-border Russia sending thousands more troops to Ukraine border ….”Although Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, has said “there could be a Russian invasion almost immediately”, on Monday she told MPs in a private conference call that Putin could keep up the military pressure on Ukraine for months, according to some of those who listened in.”….. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rasputitsa Rasputitsa |

Armour on the move using operational tracks, not peacetime training tracks…

Speculation it will all kick off on Wednesday. The public disagreement, albeit minor, between Putin and Lavrov was noteworthy, shows that there are doubts at the top too. I wonder was Lavrov stands to lose if sanctions kick in? |
