Ukraine Crisis 2014
That would be very sad, on two grounds
- The Olympic Games should be free of politics (although we know they seldom are), and
- The Paralympic athletes of all nations should not be denied their competition, although, sadly, I am sure some at least will be

I don't think Putin has any intention of entering all-out war. He has calculated that the west's inability to corral public support for military action means that he can act as he pleases. "International law" can only work when it's observed by both sides and it might be time to play dirty. I wonder what other Stuxnet-like tricks the world has got up its collective sleeves...
Are we going to see a last minute boycott of the 2014 Paralympic Games ..... opening ceremony 7th March .....
Not sure that Putin would really give a stuff mind.

Judging by comments on BBC News and elsewhere
Yes, I should imagine he would see it as an added bonus if he was relieved of the requirement to host a sideshow for the physically-imperfect. Not my opinion, you understand, but one I can quite imagine him holding.

It's ramping up, it will only take the odd trigger happy individual to start it off, the nuclear power facilities must be a serious concern given the amount of them, look how far it spread and what happened when Chernobyl went pop, and that was only one.
Bring back the cold war, at least that had a stabilising factor on these things, It just needs some big balls in Washington to ramp up a response to tell him once and for all it will not be tolerated, sadly I feel that is lacking, both here and there.
I do feel sorry for the disabled Olympians who may lose their chance after years of hard work..

Harry.....do stick to telling us what you have to say and leave off trying to speak for me as I am quite capable of expressing my own views without any assistance from the likes of you.
I have made myself quite clear on what I see the Welfare Man doing....and not doing. He is completely hopeless when it comes to Foreign Relations and his latest choice of Lurch as SecState just makes the situation worse.
A Closet Muslim and a Traitor concocting foreign policy.....sadly is what we find ourselves with today.
You watch the results and start the Tally with Iran, Libya, Egypt, North Korea, China, Russia, Venezuela, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Mali, and Nigeria. Point out any success yet?

Melm....do work on your reading comprehension and analysis of history.
Welfare Man is the Closet Muslim.....Lurch is the Traitor.
Last time I checked, it was US SpecOps and our Intelligence services that got Osama....not Welfare Man.
All Welfare Man did was issue the Order after McRaven took all the liability.
The Infrastructure that led to our capability to carry out such a Raid started way before Welfare Man came into office.
Do study a bit will you.
Reality is the deep end of the Pool....you seem to live in the Shallow End.

So President Obama takes the blame for the foreign policy failures, but not the credit for the successes?
Literally damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.
Again, riding above the personal insults SASLess (though I would go easy on those, as the mods appear to be a bit 'ban happy' of late).

Just been looking on Google Earth. Very impressed by the beautiful harbour at Sevastopol. It’s a jewel. A pearl. Now there’s a thought..........................
Given the number of Russians in London these days, one cannot help but wonder whether Valerie “Gayboy” Putin will send his “you only get one guess to know who we are” goons to Knightsbridge next on the pretext of protecting them from dangerous right wing elements.

One thing I think tough guys use is the fact that their house isn't divided and yours (meaning democracies in general) is. They've knocked their opposition on the head and they know that almost half of you dislike your own leadership to the extent of being glad to see them fall on their faces overseas. Hence it's a lot easier for them to win public-relations victories.

Assuming, of course, the comments aren't actually posted by Ukrainian or western cyber-warriors. One thing for sure is that you can't trust much in the media these days.... and that's where the tough guys really win, because they just don't care what the media says.

While there's a lull in the Limey/Septic slanging match, it might be useful to consider what Ivan's done in the recent past and how he's done it. http://www.conflictstudies.org.uk/files/rp_74.pdf "Who Gives The Orders in The New Russian Military?" makes interesting reading. I can't copy and paste as the PDF is "protected". Also, if we assume that the Russians methods are still tic toc by nature, http://www.conflictstudies.org.uk/files/04.pdf "Provocation, Deception, Entrapment: the Russo-Georgian Five Day War" is informative. Regrettably, the ARAG doesn't do executive summaries.
Everybody here is assumming Ukranian armed forces are loyal..............they probably are of course, question is to whom.
My guess is that it isn't to the latest Billionaires in office claiming they interested in democracy.

I'm surprise that March 1854 hasn't beem memtioned...
The Russians wanted the Crimea for themsleves so that they had a port that could stay open all year around. This was both for their military and their merchant trade fleet. The UK and France declared war on the Russians and the rest is history. This is where the metal for our. Victoria Crosses come from and also the infamous 'Charge of the Light Brigade'.
Let's hope we don't make the same mistake again 160 years later...
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Flew the six squadrons.
"Forward, the RAF!
"Charge for the SAMs!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six squadrons.
"Forward, the RAF!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the airman knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six squadrons.
SAMs to right of them,
SAMs to left of them,
AAA in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six squadrons.
Flash'd all their AMRAAMs bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Wraking the gunners there,
Charging a country, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the Brimstone's stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they flew back, but not
Not the six squadrons.
SAMs to right of them,
SAMs to left of them,
AAA behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While jet and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six squadrons.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the RAF,
Noble six squadrons.
With apologies to Lord Tennyson and some very brave horsemen, but you get the picture. Short of MAD* there would be little that we could do militarily thanks to successive governments taking a 'peace dividend' and buying uber expensive hardware from a UK Defense Company at well above the market rate in exchange for votes.
We are where we are!

BBC News - New Ukraine navy chief 'defects'
BBC News - New Ukraine navy chief 'defects'
If Ukrainian forces continue to restrain themselves and deny Russia a pretext for the kind of military action it undoubtedly wants to undertake, then what happens in the long term? If it is robbed of its "protecting ethnic Russians" justification by the absence of any action against them, does the international community simply let Russia continue to occupy part of a sovereign state?
