I think a better answer would be - go and see your AFCO and discuss your options and the best timing. You say you are in the middle of your degree, but we are at the start of the academic year, so you are presumably either entering your second year, or your third and final year?
My understanding is that OASC will not defer your entry if you are a second year, for what is effectively nearly two years, or at least 18 months by the time the selection process is finished. Even if they did offer you a deferred place, they would rescind it at any point that they got a better candidate - unless of course you are going for a final year cadetship?
Your best timing option seems to be to start the application process at the start of your third year, which gives enough flexibility for a few delays in the process to occur and still give you an IOT date after graduation. If you hit the process when everything is moving smoothly and you pass everything by January/February of your third year, then they will defer your IOT date until after your graduation from Uni.

You will probably find that an OASC pass has a one-year shelf-life, unless you are applying for a uni bursary, in which case you have to join within a specified period of graduating.

Presentation, Interview, OASC, Training
Hi all!
Hopefully i will be going to OASC soon and have recently spent alot of time trawling through threads and gained alot of information that will hopefully help me become a WSOp.
I wanted to know how long people have had to wait between the stages of application and acceptance?
I visited my local AFCO last week (Lincoln) and they gave me a date to attend a presentation and interview on the 8th of November. Presuming I am accepted to attend OASC what kind of date should I expect? Also after (hopefully) passing OASC how long before the training begins?
Im already trying to pepare myself for OASC. I am fairly fit, have been running a couple of times a week for the past few years and can complete the 1.5m in around 9 minutes. Able to do around 45 pressups in a minute and 25 situps.
I have started buying the RAF news and have been doing alot of reasearch about the RAF's history, and background. I have been studying all the various aircraft etc. and have been practising time/speed/distance calculations.
I presume it will be a while before I am invited to OASC but I hope I will be well prepared enough!

Timescale for me:
Walked into AFCO in late September. Started IOT in October the following year. Technically I could have started in August that year, but my application was delayed.

I can't help feeling that some people on this forum are a little harsh on newer members who are just looking for a helping hand.
Who knows, if I'd known about this website when I was at their stage I may have asked the same questions as them.
The options for Ppruners remain the same as they have always been. If you don't want to read a thread or add helpful comments then don't bother.
I can't help feeling that people like Mr Helmut just make themselves look like grumpy, unhelpful old gits!
To answer your original question, Nick, it can vary since they will fit you in when there are slots available at OASC. It sounds like you're well prepared so I wouldn't worry too much.
Just be wary of posting threads about a subject that is covered in some depth elsewhere.

After some minutes of advertising for the RAF (Join a UAS, you'll enjoy it! try a bursary, it's worth it!), they recomended applying a year before the end of my course... after year 2 in my case (unless I go for that sadwich year...).
Anyway, I'm not saying you should apply after year 2, I'm saying you should phone an AFCO.

As for a timescale, i went to the AFCO in Sept '06, then went down to RAFC for the NCA Brief in October '06, had my filter interview in January '07, went through OASC in June '07, and i'm due to attend RTS in 3 weeks (October '07), and hopefully NCAITC come January '08. So it can be a bit of a wait, but i'm sure it'll be worth it, and it certainly allows you enough to prepare for selection.

I had to wait for a couple of months after my filter interview before I was invited down to OASC. 2 weeks after completing OASC I was offered a place on IOT. So as you can see, it can be a fairly rapid process.

Besides, would the AFCO really be doing their jobs if a uni student rang up asking how to join and the AFCO staff decided not to mention the existence of the UASs and Bursary scheme? How dare they waste the time of people who ring up wanting information with well-informed suggestions as to the best route for that person to take?

I wouldn't get obsessed with any of the RAF OASC tests if I were you, Alex... All the fitness tests they have are to see if your fit. So I recommend you not to concentrate on how many press ups you can do in a minute, or how long it takes you to run 100m...
Try to concentrate on keeping fit; sitting less in front of your computer, and going out jogging from time to time would be a start.

Unless things have changed since I was in the recruiting world, there are no aircrew places at Welbeck; it is mainly for people planning to go Engineer Officer, with a couple of slots for medics and dentists. If you want to be a pilot you'd be better off applying for a 6th Form Scholarship and/or Flying Scholarship (though I can't see any Flying Schol gen on the RAF website; are they still offered?).
