Hey ex-ranker,
I found "thatquiz" website very useful for brushing up on my mental maths etc prior to OASC.
I also used Brain Training for the Nintendo DS pretty regularly and found my mental maths coming on leaps and bounds.
Good luck mate.

'How To Pass Numerical Reasoning Tests' by Heidi Smith is very good. Gives you a comprehensive review of all the basics and has lots of Speed, Distance, Time questions and Data Interpretation tests. Its on the Kogan Page website.

Bit of a daft question;
When I attended OASC last time I was consious of the fact that I had little going for me in the way of extracurricular activites. I'm now currently doing on a weekly basis: dancing, kickboxing, being a CI with the ATC, setting up a local guides group, horse riding and of course keeping up with the gym sessions. I'm also undertaking the gold DofE (better late than never!) I do enjoy these things rather than fluffing myself up for the boards, but can someone put my mind at rest that it seems alright? Or shall I start worrying that I'm not playing enough team sports?

Sixth Form Scholarship
Hi there,
Firstly forgive me if this has been posted before on the forums...
...For the past 10 Years or so, I have wanted to be a pilot in the Air Force. Im now coming up to the end of my GCSE's and am considering the oppurtunity of getting a sixth form scholarship. I feel I do have what it takes, with grades, and experience with the air cadets, however am still not convinced of meeting the criteria (if you understand).
I was wondering whether there was a chance that anybody could give me hints on what the 3 day selection at Cranwell entails and what I would need, and need to do, to gain the scholarship.
For Example...
Fitness levels
Grades at GCSE
Interveiw answers
...and generally things to make me stand out.
Dave

You really need to read all the way through the OASC thread, as it's all covered there.
I can't tell you for certain what grades the RAF want, but I do know that the RN two year 6th form scholarship, which is processed in the autumn after GSCE results, has an approximate threshold of an average of B grades, though it's not worked out quite as simply as that. Be aware that grades in Maths, English and Physics will need to be good. Cs in those won't probably be enough, even if you have As elsewhere.

WSO grades
Hi was wandering if anyone could help me and this seemed to be the best place.
Im interestead in joining the RAF as a weapon system operator crewman. I sent off my form to AFCO nearly a month ago to talk about careers but still havn't heard back. Anyway, in the book they sent me it said you need a grade c in maths, whereas i only have a d (well...3 d's ). Is this a requirement or is it still possible for me to join as a wso?

Hi Chris,
I think you'll find that if they say 'C' is the requirement, that's what they need. Give the AFCO a ring though just to be sure.
Good luck.

- all WSOp categories require 5 x GCSE pass at C or above, "to include English language, maths, and a physics-based science subject"

Aviatophobic - RN assets carrying observers are the Merlin, Lynx Mks 3 and 8, Seakings Mk 5(SAR) and 7(ASACS). The Mk4 is the commando variant and flies with one or two pilots and a crewman. Bag (Mk 7 ASACS) observers get a little stick time AFAIK in order to allow them to get the aircraft down safely if required. I don't believe this to be true on the 5 as it usually flies with a captain and copilot. The Lynx 7 is fitted with TOW and again does not carry an observer.
Hope this helps.

Proctor - what you are referring to sounds like the ASAC observer's job, or part of it. They can control other aircraft as they are fitted with an extremely capable radar and surveillance system. Secondary roles on the Lynx for example might include the observer supervising underslung loads or other tasks.
