Hey guys, I hope everyone is doing well. I had the biggest night last night. We had an industry night hosted by a well known radio station and there was free alcohol so I ended up a right mess. I ended up telling a few people I shouldn't have about me going for the VB interview, medical etc. I really regret it now. Now people are going to know that I may be leaving, and I don't even know what is happening.

Seektofly? or anyone else that has gotten into VB or the training school- how long is it usually after your medical that they end up calling you tolytell you you are in? AAhh it has been roughly around 6 weeks since my VRD and I still have no idea where my future lies? I wish I knew as I am really ready to be up up and away.... Or searching for a new challenge at a different company etc. From what I have learnt of this forum, a few of the people have had their phone call on a Friday night around 6ish. Am I right in saying that has been the case?

Seektofly- how has your first week as an official cc for VB been? From your posts it sounds wonderful. Are the hotels you are put up in, in close proximity to the airport? Or are they close to the city so you can go shopping etc? Also do cc who are also staying there, tend to socialise at the hotel or do you all go your own way once you arrive? When you said you had planned to go for a walk on the beach on the Gold Coast- is your hotel close to the beach? If it is, that is awesome. I couldn't think of anything better. I live close to the beach here in melb and would love it if you had a chance to go for a walk instead of trying to find a gym etc (I love working out so being the obsessive person I am would definitely try and scope out a gym in all cities- oh how very sad of me ).

Speak to you all soon

Morning njsboi - well it looks like it is you and me in here this morning. Did you mean - did I hear anything back yesterday or was that for STF? If you meant that post for me- NO I didn't hear anything . My phone rang a few times around 6ish and my heart kept jumping into my throat but they were just friends and not VB (sob sob). Maybe they will call next Friday- I hope they do. When they call, what do they say? Do they give you your dates etc over the phone then, or is that info sent out to you?

So do you get your uniforms fitted even before you start training school???? How AWESOME. You must be so excited. Your training school starts in a little over a week- can you believe it? So are you settled back into Melbourne life? P.S.- the weather hasn't been this ****ty for awhile so the warmth is on the way.

Well it looks like I have heaps of questions this morning- as per usual LOL.
Why do so many people leave VB all the time? I am friends with a girl who has been flying with VB for 3 years and she said around 200 have left so far this year. Are the working conditions that horrible? That is a mass exodus!! Why so? It's exciting that there is another two groups going through, but at the same time, it is scary that the turn over is so so high. If I get in, I am going to be one of those that hangs in there. I have wanted to do this for a long long time - I secretly think this is my calling (is that ridiculous?)

yeah i had the uniform fitting...its sinking in as well....doesnt feel like a friend is gonna drop me off at the airport, which it actually felt like that for a few days...was an awfull feeling!!!ive been down chapel so many times now..and catching up with friends, before i know it ill be training!!!!
well my VRD was the 5th July...and i found out 18th august...4 weeks exactly before i started...BUT i think they tried calling the day before but i was flying and they dont leave voice messages so thats why i saw hang on to your phone very close...
i think i was a little delayed as well....the medical centre in DRW didnt fax the form back properly(even though i called them a few days later to double check) lucky VB was already on the ball and was chasing it up!!!!
and i heard theres a school soon so it may be a week or 2 after we finish ours...or may even overlap as i hear some of them do.
STF...was your trainers male or female????
hmmmm lets hope this weather does improve...cause im gonna be rugging up for work everyday...its amazing how much you climatize when you have to!!!well a sat in melb and what do i do...hmmm maby shop for a new bag for training hahahaha

ok... Im awake

Hi guys!

I am still here on this Saturday morning.

FYD - don't worry, that phone will ring I promise (and I am guessing it will be within the next 2 weeks) I think they will either call you this week OR wait until September 18 Ground School is going on before they call you with a start date. Perhaps they are still working out a start date and can't tell you yet when it will be. Power of positive thinking is amazing!
They called me the day after the medical, but then again, everyone's experience with "that phone call" is different.

NJSBOI, well done with the uniform. I hated going for my uniform fitting and what was even worse is that during training school, all you tend to do is eat lollies and junk food, and not exercise (as time is very limited with all the studying) - so everyone I chatted to ended up putting on a couple of kilos. Oh there was one girl who actually stressed out soooo much that she lost weight instead! It wasn't me. No - God no, I put on a couple of kilo's.

In answer to some of your questions about the hotels, I have so far stayed in the hotel at Sydney (which is near Kings Cross) - it is a nice hotel, but very close to Kings Cross... and there is a Supermarket right across the road which is really handy but I am not sure about crossing the road at night time alone as you are in Kings Cross.... It is a 4 and a half star hotel... but did I mention it was in Kings Cross???????????

The hotel at the Gold Coast is a really nice one and a block behind the beach front, and you get a balcony which faces out onto the beach. It is beautiful and I am still kicking myself that I went to sleep upon arrival. My room had a nice corner tub (I think you could squeeze 2 people in there... but it was just me and I had plenty of room!! ) I thought "well, I missed out on my beach walk, so I will have a bath instead". Well you know what? It wasn't such a bad idea. I felt sooooo relaxed afterwards and it carried over until the next day. My feet felt sooooo good (as usually they are still throbbing from being on my feet all day the day before.) Definitely a consideration if you have a tub in your room. You also get 25% discount in the restaurants and room service - so my meal which was meant to be $14.00 came to $10.50 (which I think is pretty good).

Anyway, I am sorry I didn't get to finish off the last day of my 3 day trip, but I can finish it off now.

Virgin Blue Online Training. Week 1. Day 4. Thursday September 7, 2006. 3 Weeks Exactly until my birthday.

Yes, it is 3 weeks today until my birthday. OMG I am getting old!
Today is the last day of my very first trip.

This morning my wakeup call arrived at 3.45 am. I slowly got out of bed and pottered around the hotel room trying to wake up. It was still dark outside, but I opened the sliding door to the balcony and I felt a really light sea breeze, which wasn't cold. I left the balcony door open while I went into the bathroom to start getting ready for work.

We were getting picked up from the hotel (which is located between broadbeach and Surfers) at 5.00am. I met the rest of the crew downstairs at 4.55am. Everyone was surprisingly quiet, and because I had a decent amount of sleep the night before, I felt quite good (considering what time it was).

The mini bus arrived to pick us up and take us to the airport. We arrived at the airport at around 5.20 am. There wasn't much traffic on the road at that time of the morning, and we signed in at 5.30am.

We travelled from Coolangatta to Melbourne, (and we had a 2 hour wait in Melbourne) then from Melbourne to Sydney and then from Sydney to Melbourne.

During my 2 hour wait in Melbourne, I went into the uniform shop (Uniform Hangar) to order 2 name badges for myself. I lost my name badge during the trip, so I ordered 2 - just in case.

The flights were good. That first flight from the Gold Coast to Melbourne, we had a guest who had had a huge night the night before and just reeked of alcohol. He had a panic attack on takeoff and when the seatbelt sign went off, the passenger next to him called us (and she was no relation to him) and she told us that he was afraid of flying and I think the alcohol made it 10 times worse. We put him on oxygen, but then we let him lie down and he seemed to be ok - we kept going up to him and chatting to him to get his mind off things, and that seemed to work .

Other than that the Melbourne to Sydney and Sydney to Melbourne flights were good, and I had some idea of what I was doing.

********************************

Tomorrow (Sunday) I am off again for a 4 day trip. First night in Coolangatta again and the next two nights in Sydney. My sign on tomorrow morning is 8.20 am, so not tooo bad. I get into the Gold Coast tomorrow night at 5pm so I am thinking I might be too late for a beach walk, but I will definitely have a soak in the tub again!

Tonight I am going to a family party at a reception center for my cousins Confirmation. It should be good, but I will be saying goodbye at around 11 pm. I need my beauty sleep! (Gawd, I need more than beauty sleep, I need a magic wand!!!)

Anyway guys, tomorrow night I will make another entry from the computer at the hotel in Coolangatta that I used the last time I was there. I don't know about Sydney, but I will try to find a computer there too. Have a great Saturday, and you never know, I might just pop in this afternoon to see what is going on in here!

Until next time, Take care,

STF

PS: I must have taken a loooonnnnnnggg time to write that entry, so I missed the next two entries made. My trainers were both Male and Female. If you get a male trainer who will train you for Emergency Procedures, and his initials are G.H, then ask him does he really eat off the carpet... LOL - he will definitely know where that one came from!!! (as I made it up!)

Wow seektlfly- I am so envious and thats great that you get to be in a hotel sooo close to the beach. Bring on summer!!

OMG- a day after your medical?? Well my medical was on Wednesday and nobody has called AAAhghgh oh no. I swear they said I was fit to fly. I rang the medical clinic when I was at work to double check that the receptionist had faxed it off and she said she had as soon as i had left. She seemed a bit bothered that I had called her about it. Is that rude of me to do that??? I don't think it was, but maybe it was? Do you think if VB rang the medical clinic, and the receptionist told VB that I rang up to double check - would VB care that I did that? Oh no I'm stressing out now. OK breath in and breath out!

Lines around your eyes?

FYD ,

No, I don't think that it was rude of you to call them up to ask if they had sent off your medical. It shows that you are very keen to make sure that things have been done. I think it is a good thing, so don't panic.

Lines around your eyes???? They are from squinting trying to see lines that are not there!

Don't panic. 27 is not a bad age at all. It could be worse. You could be turning 97! Isn't it funny how your birthday is exactly one week before mine???? Perhaps a double celebration is in order this year!!!

Anyway, check your pm's.

LOL LOL LOL your too funny seektofly.. I know, I could be turning 97 hahaha. No I take that back I am happy to be turning 27, I just don't know where the last 7 years have gone!!!! And yes I probbaly am getting lines from squinting in the mirror trying to find the lines hahahaha

Yep one week before yours- do you have any plans this year or will you be flying? I'm not a big birthday person so i'll probbaly go out to dinner with a few friends but that's about it.

I just managed to have a shower now- my head is pounding from last night. OMG I fell asleep in the cab and when I got home I had a shower (mind you it was 4 in the morning) and was so drunk that I dropped my shower gel bottle and the bottom broke spilling the entire new full bottle on the shower floor- woops.

My back is really sore so I am going to try and get my ass over to the shopping centre and get one of those chinese massages. I am desperate need of one. Oh speaking of massages I won a 1 hour massage at Aurora (Acland Street) through the footy tipping at work. If I get that phone call I might have it after that and of course in celebration of my 72nd, oh sorry 27th birthday!

LOL FYD I bet you look no where near 27yrs!!

I've seen a pic of STF, and I still don't believe how old she claims to be...

STF, I wanna see your licence for your birthdate when we meet! haha

Hey FYD dw about having called the receptionist to double-check... If forgot to who it happened on here, but one receptionist didn't fax it properly! And I know at work, when I get bombarded with queries and take notes and ppls phone numbers and I promise to call back at a certain time etc it can get pretty hectic! LOL Just the other day at my new work as a waitress, this young couple had been sitting down for like 15mins after having ordered drinks and an entree... and they saw me walk by, and they're like, "can we please order now??" I'm like omgggg!! SORRY!! I was a headless chook last night, running around with orders etc... so yeh, better to check just in case the receptionist hadn't, and don't worry if she sounded kranky... she's probably just jealous that you're making it through with VB! LOL

I'm off peeps... lol my big bro's bday party is tonight! So many birthdays in September... Hmmm!

Hey all!! Have been following this thread with interest the ;ast few days...

STF, I was laughing so much at your story about falling asleep - I just KNEW that was going to happen!! Lol! Don't worry, at least you didn't wake up halfway between the bath room and the bed, like one FA I know of!!

FYD, I know how you feel re: phone calls... seems that my friends never wanted to call me so much as when I was waiting for ''the call"! They soon figured out from my screeching that they should hang up in case the airline people called me back, hahaha!

STF, I'm not exactly sure of the street names, but when I stayed in Sydney a few years ago, I went budget/backpackers... there's a place on the corner near Hyde Park and Wentworth Street called the Y on the Park - they have computer kiosks (coin-operated) for internet access. I remember being told we were fairly close to King's Cross. Might be worth checking out if you want internet. Either that, or go to www.sydney.citysearch.com and search by suburb for an internet cafe??

You probably won't have to look far for a gym, if your hotels are 4 star I'd guess they have at least some basic equipment and a pool, and probably free for guests to use!!

Angel My first 4 day trip starts tomorrow!!!

Hi all,

I am just home from the party I went to tonight, and I missed you all, so I wanted to pop on and say hello before embarking on my 4 day trip tomorrow. I am still up and yet I have to be up in like 6 hours. Never mind.

Julz, you are such a darling, of course I will show you proof of my age! Guys, I don't know what Julz is taking - but I think I look at least 5 or 6 years older than what I really am!

FYD - I will be waking up in Surfers on the day of my birthday, and going to bed in Adelaide on my birthday... and I think my parents are coming up to spend my birthday evening in Adelaide with me! They will probably stay in the hotel room with me too! It should be good. I will celebrate (go out for dinner) with friends about a week after that!

Sky, thanks for the heads up about the internet in Sydney. Don't worry, I will find an internet connection somewhere so I can keep up with my diary entries every night - OMG I can't believe how much you guys like reading these entries! You guys are hilarious! I am seriously considering writing a book. It wouldn't be very good, but I think that potential flight attendants like some of the people reading this thread would perhaps find it interesting.

Anyway, I am going to bed now, as I still have to finalise a few things before turning in (like setting my alarm clock and organising what uniform shirt I will be wearing tomorrow). I will be in Surfers tomorrow night, and I know definitely that there is an internet cafe in the foyer of the hotel, so I will be using it then after dinner.

Until then though, take care, and have a great Sunday!

STF

Morning guys - well I have say you know you are getting older when you are still recovering from Friday night on Sunday morning.

Its a bit quiet on here this morning!

Seektofly- thats really cool that you are in another state for your birthday.

A girl that works for VB gave me a copy of her roster to see how it looks - It looks cool. One of her weeks in September she has three days off and then the 2 days after that she is on call at home. Does that mean she has to stay in the house? Or do you just have to be in the vicinity to be able to get your stuff and get to the airport?

Angel VRD 22nd September questions?

Hi All,

What a day's worth of reading... it's great!!! It's really great to read through all the journey's of everyone who has left the footprints for which I want to follow! Well I'm pretty excited and a little nervous as I will be attending a recruitment day on the 22nd of Sept in Melbs. This will be my second VRD , I also went to one five years ago in Brisbane, since then I have always wanted to re-apply however personal situations hindered this... so now here I go!!! I'm however a little concerned because I have this shyness that washes over me when nervous... it is so strange as I'm such a people person, would make a fool of myself in front of many just for a laugh... but I'm worried I won't be out there enough. Does anyone have any tips about making yourself stand out?

Also considering the VRD is only at the end of September can anyone confirm that If I were successful the next training wouln't be till January? Or would there be one going through in October?

bellax....you will be great!as everyone told me this.... just be yourself!
all you have to do it act relaxed(even if your not!)... mix with the other candidates, dont just mix with the first people you meet...move around the room...laugh...tell a few jokes...include everyone..SMILE... and have fun, thats what the days all about!!!!!!!!
its propb good youve already been to a VRD...my first one i didnt go through past the first round(bit of a learning curb) but i knew what to expect the second time around,as alot of people dont know what to expect and i found they ask the people that do know!
jsut have prepared what your gonna say in your 5 min 1on1...good stuff about yourself...get to the point and stand out!and just have a few examples in your mind if you make it to the afternoon session 1on1....
you will be great..you already have an idear what to expect and 1 step infront of the others cause youve already tracked all of our experiences and know alot already!
ohhh someone mentioned that one of the nurses forgot to fax it off to VB...THAT WAS MINE,even after i called to make sure they did.
hmmm a lazy sunday at home(i forgot how good breakfast on chapel is)
and dvd's...i love lazy cold sunday's....

OH ITS GOOD TO BE HOME! Australia.... I've Missed you!

Hi All!!

Well i've been busy sorting out my stuff to take to MEL, my mum gets all my other stuff dumped on her until i get the movers to ship it down.
I'm moving with 1 suitcase and my laptop.. thats it! BRING ON SHOPPING!
Lol, speaking of shopping, went out yesterday and bought some new stuff to wear to training.... i have missed shopping in Oz so much! Yes i know i have been able to shop in places like Dubai etc the last 4 years....but really.... we have some GREAT fashion in oz! Now its a lovely rainy sunday here in QLD, RAIN.. i've missed that too!! I know, i am a strange person, but after seeing so much sand and desert and heat.. rain is a nice change.

STF- Sounds like things are going GREAT for you!! Busy of course.... but sounds like you are enjoying it! Hope i get to fly with you soon! I'll be looking out for you!

FYD- Hun i did my medical on the 8th of August and virgin didn't call until the 18th! So i waited 10 days,... and like njsboi, exactly 4 weeks before training started!

ck84 - no hun, my mate hasn't got the confirmation email yet either for the VRD on 22nd Sept.

Njsboi- 8 days to go!!!!! I'm excited! Moving to Melb on Thursday!!

reasons why?

Followyourdreams!
reason why so many crew leave is simple!
they work you so hard
rest times between shifts is getting less ie very rarly more than 15hours even in home base and (remember thats chocks on airport to sign on back at work -no travel time included)
the fatigue you experience from all those odd hours becomes cumulative
running around on turnarounds between aircraft and cleaning - no time to even go to the loo (sometimes...)
eating at all hours and often at record speed..
yeah three days off sounds great..but you dont really recover properly and then you are back at it again!
trying to sqeeze other normal day to day tasks into your days off when you ARE at home.
yes ..we all know that some ood these things are part of the job before we begin, but the fact is at Virgin, as at other big companies you are just a number ..they want efficency and results and productivity...ie KPI's and KRA's are very important and your sick leave will be monitored very carefully whether or not you have taken your 20 days and more or not.
Annual leave is great but good luck in getting it when you want it and having enough time to recover from your roster.
The fact is,no matter how much you love your job, crew start to get disgruntled with the arduous rosters very quickly and the average lifespan of a VB flightie is really only 2-3years because of the pace you keep up.
I was, and still am passionate about avaition and i loved it, but i started to get very frustrated and run down to excess - I had to call it quits.
Please dont get too down about it, but it can be a rude shock after the novelty of it wears off and real fatigue sets in - you have to be SOOO good to yourself and your health to stay on top of it..unfotunately it is the way the whole indusrty works now...it's all about efficency.

To answer another qus, on call days are called 'availables' when you re at home - can be great if you dont get called, but also you have to be very organised (ie have your bag packed, unifrom ironed and ready, and have eaten etc) if you want to have the flexibility to go out do other things...and not go anymore than 2hours away from the airport in travelling time. They will call you and give you two hours to get there,if under to hours it is not legal unless they adjust your sign on time accordingly.
Never accept a duty if that happens as you are compromising everything the EBA stands for and is and it is VERY important you know those conditions like the back of your hand.
Good luck and take care- remember if you are passionate go for it but just know the reality.
