You may have to start a new thread eagle!

Hi guys!

I agree with you guys completely. I am home and I keep checking pprune to see if anyone has posted. I thought I would seeing that you guys are all bored.

Eagle, you might want to start a new thread about Jetstar check in. I am sure that there might be loads of people out there asking the same thing or maybe even people might have some information - I don't know if these people would think to look on a thread that is entitled Virgin Recruitment to find out about Jetstar. I haven't heard about the position if that helps

By the way, good luck for your trip down to Melbourne NJSBOI, I wish you a very safe trip. I hope it all goes well for you - and I look forward to seeing you in the sky. I am sure we will meet someday, and perhaps exchange stories about our time at our former workplace!!!

Anyway, I think I might have an early night tonight, because it is the last day for a while where I can sleep in - 5.30 sign on Monday morning ...eekkkkk I think the struggle will be getting out of bed but after that I should be fairly right. There is just one person that I have to ring before turning in on this Saturday night!

Have a lovely Sunday guys. Will let you know how day 1 of Week 1 online training goes. Trust me. The diary hasn't finished yet!!!

As always, yours truly,
STF

Hi guys,

I was just reading a girls thread about the advantages and disadvantages of being cabin crew! Gosh these are things you don't really think about. I think my entire focus is of getting into cabin crew, and you really don't think about the lifestyle you may be about to give up.

I know the cc lifestyle is a massive change from a 9-5 office job and that takes abit to get used to, but I also forgot about the fact that you will never get another proper weekend again, you miss out on the Christmas period, friends b/days etc. Your always tired, varicose veins, dry skin, blocked ears, sore feet etc etc etc etc.

Can any VB cabin crew that read this please let me know the pro's and cons that they think come into play because I really don't know them all and would love more feedback. Do they manage the roster fairly? Do you get some normal weekends offor are you pretty much guaranteed to be working over the entire Sat & Sun. Are you able to tell them you can't work a specific day if you its in advance? Look I am/will be as dedicated as the next person, but when you are being told that you won't ever have a life once you are cc and don't expect to meet a b/f or g/f ever, because you will have no time etc thats pretty scary. I'm not getting any younger and although I am hanging to become cc there do seem to be alot of cons involved. You do need to have a balance from work and personal life but if work takes 90% of that balance thats verrry scary. What if I grow old and lonely due to being a cc aaahhhhh

I would love some VB cc's feedback from there own personal experiences if thats ok.

followyourdreams,
The job of cabin crew is like no other- especially in the lifestyle department. You sign up to a job where you could be rostered to work at any time of day (or night) 365 days of the year.

Our current rostering system allows a little bit of say over your life each month. But it is far from perfect with many people missing out on important events (friends weddings, baptisms, birthdays etc) every month.

Virgin are about to introduce another rostering system that seems to allow a lot more say over your lifestyle. It takes us from 5 bids/ month to 16 bids/ month and has a default that guarantees a certain level of "success" for you as an individual over a 3 month period. It sounds very promising; however let’s wait until we see it before we jump for joy.

Don't expect to spend your first couple of Christmases with your family as you can imagine this is a very sought after time for holidays. And with no penalty rates for working this day most crew are not very happy when it shows up on their roster.

It sounds like you are coming from a 9-5 job so if you are successful you will find the lifestyle a rather big change- but you may find you love it! I have never worked Mon-Fri so that was no big issue for me, however when you are away on a trip your own time after work is never really your own. You can't catch up for coffee with friends, pop out to the local shops to pay your bills etc. (You also need to worry about drinking curfews if you have a glass of wine with dinner!)

There is also a good chance your health will suffer, this is a combination of our working environment, the shifts we do, hotel rooms, poor eating habits etc. However on the up side you may find yourself taking better care of your health just to combat all this- a great habit to get into for the rest of your life.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
love SMILE

OOO I just re-read my last post and I just wanted to say that even though I have made it all sound a little "doom and gloom" there are also many bonuses to the lifestyle.

We do get 10 days off a month. You can trip swap if you miss out on getting a special occasion off.

I also really enjoy having days off mid-week, it means that there are no school kids hanging out at the shopping center!!!

LOL Smile, you're so funny!

Haha speaking about kids at the shops... my mum has a saying, that if ever she becomes prime minister (which, dw, she wont!) she'd make a rule that old pensioners aren't allowed out of their homes on weekends, because they always drive so slow, and walk just as slow in the shops, and hold up queues with questions and taking their time to pack up their wallet etc... I'd like to see how fast my mum would be at their age!!

Hi All.

Just a quick post to say i'm still alive.. njsboi and DJ Fly boi.. SEE YOU SOON!
Sorry i've been so slack on posting.. but my computer isn't working right now (on the flatmates now) and life is CRAZY when you are trying to move countries!

I just did my last flight for Emirates... and it was great! Captain made a special PA to all the passengers, saying I was leaving and good luck.... All the crew got together, with a First Class menu, and wrote little messages to me saying goodbye and good luck.

Now.. just when i really DO NOT NEED IT..i get sick..!!
I fly out of Dubai on Thursday..and have SO much to do! There is a fair amount of running around to do when you leave here, and being sick makes it harder... But i'm dosing up on antibiotics and echinacea... but off the booze which makes farewell drinks rather boring....

STF... congratulations hun.. very proud of you! Thanks for all the diary entries.. and yes i noted your comment! I will TRY to do one.. but unsure of internet access when i first get to MEL. Best of luck for when you start online.... i SO want a BNE on my first roster.. that would be FAB!!
As i post this... you are probably signing on RIGHT NOW!!

Gotta run, need to be up at 630am to drop off passport for Visa cancelling.. and its nearly midnight now... 6 hours behind here..

3 more sleeps and i'm on my way home!

Online Training - Starts Today!!

Hi Ya guys!

Told ya that I wouldn't forget about you once I started flying!!! Today was my first day. I was the new kid on the block today - and everyone knew it too!!! I was shocking at the service and I messed up the safety demonstration - as I knew I would. Oh well. There is plenty of time as I get to do it all over again tomorrow and then Wednesday and Thursday!!!

I am absolutely knackered, so I will keep my comments short and sweet tonight, as I have just arrived home and want to go to sleep any time soon. I still have to pack for tomorrow's 3 day trip.

Ok - as promised, my continuation of the training diary.

Virgin Blue Online Training. Week 1 Day 1. First day.
September 4, 2006.

Well. What a day it has been for me. I was supposed to sign on this morning at 5.35, but because it was my first day, I was really anxious, so I got there at like 5.15. I saw a couple of people from my training group, and it was really strange that we were there all at the same time - but out of the classroom. Everyone was meeting their buddy. I didn't know what my buddy looked like, so when I got there, I saw one of my training friends, and she had a buddy who told me that my buddy had just walked in and was "over there". I walked up to my buddy and introduced myself. We went into the briefing and my crew was just sooooo ultra nice - I couldn't have asked for a nicer crew. They all wanted to make me feel at ease, as they could see my nerves.

My first flight was a Melbourne to Newcastle. I went up to the flight deck and sat in there for take off out of Melbourne. IT WAS SOOOOOOOO AWSOME!!!! - Honestly you guys should try it some time!!! Then after we were airborne, I got out of the flight deck and watched from the safety of the back galley. It is amazing how quickly you want to jump up and do something, so I helped bring in the rubbish! My first task as a flight attendant... collecting rubbish! Nice one!

The second flight I had was Newcastle to Brisbane. I decided that it was time for me to get up and do my first safety demonstration. So, I went up the cabin and waited. If you have never flown Virgin before, they introduce the cabin crew members while they are standing there about to do the safety demo - so when the Cabin Supervisor got to me ... she said.."and in the middle we have STF (name witheld for obvious reasons) and, Ladies and Gentlemen, this is STF's very first day at Virgin Blue. I can tell you now, that my ears turned red and so did my face. I looked like a gigantic tomato! The red jumper didn't help either. I knew I should not have worn it today! Then the Cabin Supervisor didn't stop there... she continued by saying "STF, give everyone a big wave..." and by this time I was beside myself with embarassment - and now everyone is looking at me (even those people that never ever look at the safety demonstration) - I was the show - it seemed like the FREAK SHOW

So after I waved I couldn't do up my life jacket in time and then I couldn't find the tubes to blow into, and then the toggles got all tangled up, HOW EMBARASSING - and all these people watching me to see if I would stuff up on the first day.

OH WELL. Needless to say, I didn't do much else but hide all that flight - so I wouldn't have to answer too many questions!

My third and last flights were ok, but on the last flight, I decided I should give the service a try - and I did, but it didn't feel comfortable, I didn't know what to do first and ended up getting all muddled up. Never mind. It was my first day after all. My buddy told me a few pointers that I will try to remember for tomorrow, but other than that. That was pretty much my first day online. Tomorrow is the beginning of my 3 day trip. Tomorrow night I overnight in Sydney, and on Wednesday night I am overnighting in Coolangatta. I can't wait.

If I don't post tomorrow night, please understand that I am away, and probably no where near a computer. If I can get to one I will post - my second day online. If I can't, then I will post when I get back on Thursday night.

Hostee, get better soon darling - I can't wait to have you online!!!

Until then everyone else, take care!

I hate to say it FYD.. but I told you so!!!

Congratulations FYD !!!

I must have been writing my post when you were writing yours, as I didn't notice it until I went to check for any replies!!!

I am soooooo happy for you. YAY YAY YAY!!! I know exactly how you are feeling at the moment. What you need to do now is the medical and then expect an invitation for ground school which starts either later on this month or early next month. I don't know if you will make it into the September 18 ground school - but you never know your luck in a big city. Loads of people wear glasses, so don't worry. I don't think your asthma should be a huge problem. I am sure that there are people out there flying around with a mild case of asthma. As long as you can manage it when it does flare up a bit (not virgin flair... ) but if you can take care of it, I don't see any problems.

We might just have to exchange names (in pm's of course) and I will be waiting for you online.

Again, congratulations on having made it this far - I am sure you will go absolutely aaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the way.

YAY again!

Oh thanks Seeektofly and Iulia and Omo- I can't believe it. I have my medical tomorrow and just emailed the recruitment guys to let them know etc. A bit nervous.

If I get past that, I won't be able to get into the Sept 18th training as I need to give my employer 4 weeks notice, however there must be another coming up after that one. I wonder why there are so many going through... Do people hate working for VB or something. Its great coz it leaves room for me to be considered, however it is strange having so many people trained up. They must have a huge shortage or something. Does anyone know why?

Seektofly- yes we will definitely have to exchange names so I can finally get to meet you

Hopefully your second day on the job is great. How mnay nights away do you have this month? And to where?

Hi guys,

as some of you already know I have my medical tomorrow morning. I am getting very nervous about it due to having asthma. I know a few of you have said that it will be fine, but how many of you know whether the recruiters will see this as a negative thing. My asthma does not affect my day to day life but I have beeen looking on line and some websites do say that the oxygen levels dramatically alter when flying (I have flown a million times and my breathing has been fine). I know I would be fine, but do you think they will think its fine?? It would be discrimination if they did! Do you know what I mean? They may think I am too much of a risk or something. They do a lung capacity test for a reason - and mine may not be up to scratch. I would be shattered if that was the case. Or do you think you would have to have serious breathing problems for them to even consider not putting me forward? AAhhh I hope everything is ok. How long do they usually take to get back to you after you have done medical? I hope a few days, because I can't handle waiting anymore- I just want to know either way and be put out of my misery.

There!!!! I feel better now!
