Red face QF Fixed term contracts

Dear fellow Ppruners....

Just needed an experianced ear to clarify a few points on the above mentioned subject, as I have got through the final interview and only have to do the ASIC check and medical, of which I am sure there will be no trouble.

My dilema is this. I am currently working for DJ as ground crew, and if by chance QF do decide to give me a start, i will obviously have to leave. I am concerned that if I do well at QF, and at the end of my term, my contract is not renewed, I will have given up any chance of getting back in to DJ, and as such giving up any further movement within the company.

My question is this... what is the likelyhood that my contract will be renewed at the end of the term?

I know a lot of the positions are being moved off shore, and while as a general rule I think it is pretty poor form, I have dual citizenship and it would be a good opportunity for me to live a dream and work overseas.

Can someone save this poor soul from anymore sleepless nights?

Happy Landings,

I am very curious about your asic check and medical.
Have you been told you are up to that stage?
Myself and several friends were told we were through to the next stage after our panel interview which was the reference check, and my assumption is the board review also.
Have you had a second email since the panel interview?

I have friends on the 11 month longhaul contracts at the moment. They are finishing shortly. They were offered the London base and declined the offer. They have been told their contracts aren't being renewed. They are also of the opinion that Qantas is overstaffed at the moment.

My personal opinion is if you would like to fly longhaul and don't care if it's only for a short time, then go for it.
If you're looking for permanent employment, why not stay where you are and apply for a cabin crew position when they become available at DJ.
You could always do the contract and apply to DJ for a cabin crew position when you finish up.
There seems to be a lot of movement within the cabin crew ranks. I also think there is natural attrition due to burn out. The girls and guys work very hard with lots of minimum rest.
I myself am pursuing another career and would love to spend my last year as cabin crew at Qantas.

Good luck whatever you decide.
There is a lovely expression that I always like to read when I feel I need the strength to take that leap of faith.
When I'm finding it hard to break out of my comfort zone.

"and the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom"

Remember whatever you decide, YOU are the master of your destiny!

AnyGivenSunday99,

In regards to your ASIC check....QF cannot offer you to start training unless you security has been cleared. If I was you I would be doing some calls for them to process it ASAP! Just ring to ask if there are any current opportunities at the moment and then at least they will be aware of your file and realise that your medical and ASIC needs to be cleared. You've got nothing to lose. It worked for me!

Very interesting......

Hey Guys, thanks for the info.... very much appreciated!!

I have been through the panel interview (in early Jan) and then I get a package in the mail about a week ago with all the ASIC forms and the details for the medicals. When I made my appointment with the doctors, they told me the cost of what they do (about $300) and that at the end if I pass, it still doesn't mean that I will get the job, hence my hesitation....

I am of the school of thought that it would be a bit rich of QF to make me spend all this money and for them to tell me to get after all that. Would it be rational to think that i am in if I pass? Or are QF that arrogent?

Never the less, I belive that nothing ventured nothing gained... so, (and thanks for the advice) Im going to go for it. after all how bad could london be ?

Also -

Rollz, are you currently in with QF? if so, how do i get in contact with the relevant people to speed things along? I like my job with DJ, but cant wait to finish kicking and do what i really want

Cabinsecure, have you heard anything yet? when did you have your last interview?

Talk soon guys!!

AnyGivenSunday99!

If i was you, don't believe anything until you see it, as things change within 5 minutes. Even once you start flying, you learn not to believe anything until you see it, its one big rumour mill. Don't think you'll be going to London either.

As said before, i know quite a few people who have gotten to the medical and security stage and have still got the thanks but no thanks letter and they had nothing wrong with them or criminal history so................I know it's hard not to get excited, but just also prepare for the negative response incase of disappointment. QF won't think about things like you having to spend $300 on medical/secuirty expenses etc as if you won't do it, then the next person in line will.

All i can say is believe it when you see it. Even after i got the call, i said i wouldn't believe i had the job until i had signed the contract and was in the uniform.

Good luck with everything.

Contract

Good luck anygivensunday99 but I have to agree with OZcabincrew. I am not sure why you would leave DJ a full time position to work with a company that moral is so low at the moment. Why not try and apply for DJ crew??? I work longhaul and I dont belive it is heading in the direction that it should be. Managment are always looking at ways of pissing staff of and once on board all you hear is bad things that have happend to people and how bad the company is.
Why you would want to get into this is beyond me. Its not like you would be doing a lot of flying doing long haul as more and more the AKL base crews are being used and in general the flying is becoming regional!!! Goodluck anyway!!

anygivensunday99, I too was in your position 2 years ago. Went thru the QF interviews (x3), paid my $250 (back then) for medical and security checks. Had QF contact my references in Aus and overseas. At this point I was feeling pretty positive and planning my new life at QF........and then a month later received that lovely letter in the mail that starts off with "Unfortunately......."

I agree with the others, go through the motions of the process ie fork out for the medical etc. Then put it of your head until you have received your wings.

Easier said than done, I know.

Don't worry about making the choice btw DJ and QF until you have too.

Good Luck.

Thank you all for your feedback... It has been fantastic, and I hope all the other lost souls out there have also got something out of it!

Well, the day is upon me, as I am off to do the medical tomorrow morning at 9am... not looking forward to having all those needles (i'm a big girls blouse when it comes to pain!!)

I guess at the end of the day, i've got nothing to loose, as DJ will still be there if I do miss out, as disappointing as that will be!!

Let me just say at this point in time, just how impressed I am with the community of CC folk out there, that you have all been so willing to give me a hand. It's a rare thing to find in such a fickle industry!! So Cheers from the bottom of my heart!

Better go get some beauty sleep... and a BIG drink of water!!

I'll let you know how I get on!

Look before you leap! Are you aware you might be USED/employed by Qantas as a fixed termer to be a 'strike breaker' for Australian Airlines? QF is overstaffed at the moment and rumour has it a VR will be on offer for longhaul...wonder where you will be working???

strikebreakers vs contractors

Strikebreakers may be on a contract but not all contractors are for the purpose of strikebreaking. Delve into the history of Qantas Long Haul for the previous five years and you will discover that any permanent cabin crew (out of MEL base at least) have been taken from those who were employed on a contractual basis.

As with any job, it is important to consider the length of the contract you are offered, if you are lucky enough to be called before getting turfed off the shortlist.

No current contractors have been offered permanent roles as yet...I have an email from Mark Hassell, General Manager Cabin Crew this week indicating that 'at this stage' no permanent crew will be employed for the financial year 2005/06.

While that can all change tomorrow, don't put your life on hold for it.

Virgin have lost a number of cabin crew to QF with the last 11 month contract intake...perhaps they would consider offering you a flying role to keep you?

I hope this helps you make a decision.

Good Luck

Was your e-mail from Mark Hassell in regard to long haul only or both divisions? Thanks.

Seems stange to me that you are being offered a possible LH contract. I have been trained on QF 747 and AO 767 and both cert's are current. All I have been offered with fellow crew member was MAM, Jetconnect or UK QF. Myself and fellow crew members WOULD have been first in line if their are ANY LH contracts available, so I can tell you now that it isn't going to happen. My best guess is that you are going to be put on the short list for any other future positions, whatever that may be. LH is overstaffed at the moment but there is a great shortage of CSM ans CSS so that it where the problem lies. QF's employment program is a dinosaur and I know on good and honest info that they are having a contractor appointed to re-vamp and re-structure the whole scenario. The problem once again is the rumour mill that seems to run more efficiently than the company itself. My best advise is get it directly from the source then make you mind up. Although QF do tend to contradict themselves and withhold infomation that is crucial to people like yourself who need to make future decisions. Good luck anyway...

P.S. Oh yeah, it's Mark Cassell Not Hassell

I can guarantee you one thing its Mark Hassell not Cassell.

P.S. Oh Yeah, being trained on QF 747 and AO 767 and both cert's are current = Strikebreaker, just the sort of person we would expect to receive factual information from.

You weren't JUST ONLY offered MAM, Jetconnect or QF UK, they are good positions that thousands of people would take in a split second if they had the chance. If you took Jetconnect you would be a permanent employee of a QF subsiduary or if you took QF UK you would have a permanent position on your return to Oz. It seems you are taking a lot of things for granted, things that people would kill for! Believe me, you have no priority over a position or L/H contract as much as the next person. I'm guessing you may have been on a L/H fixed term contract? (correct me if i'm wrong)if you were/are, then really at the end of your contract, there is no obligation to renew your contract or offer you any other sort of position whatsoever.

Please have your facts right before correcting people.

Biscuit Chucker,

You are absolutely correct in pulling me up for my error of MARK HASSELL's name. I had recieved a QF letter with the spelling "Cassell," which I had verified this afternoon and corrected. My apologies to anyone offended.
Galley Hag, what amazes me is persons like yourself that keep on ranting and raving about "us" strikebreakers. All the permanent LH ans SH crews I know personally have been supportive and positive towards oneself obtaining a position within QF. And guess what? I did get one! As for the whole "strikebreaking" options there was ALOT of misinformation about the options we got, even through the panel interviews. Vast amounts of people got dealt a bad hand, but that's life. You learn and move on! Period!!!
I'm NOT going to sit here and carry on with a lengthy justification. But I WILL say this. Qantas is a business. They ARE in the business of making money. Now you can either get in the game and perform or you can sit there and sook like every other whinging QF F/A about conditions and wages etc. The system will change whether you like it or NOT, and as a fellow member of the union do you really think the union will do all that much (9% over 3 years). Hmmm. Unfortunately Qantas is years behind the rest of the muli-corporate world as far as contract work is concerned but they are catching up fast. Why? Profits!
Now you can either get smarter and play the game, improve your position within the company or you can sit there, talk about the good old days and be left behind. It's your choice. Like OZ said there ARE people dying for those jobs. Just remember you may be the one who will be on the outside looking in - in the future! You may be thinking he's only new to the industry "what would he know". Like I said QF is a business, just like BHP, Woodside, Patricks etc. I have seen the insides of these businesses first hand and they did this years ago. So it's just a copy-cat design. We'll just see, won't we?

Qantas are making money, heaps of it. Record profits and forecast to make even more this year.

All at the expense of the employees, management hand themselves a huge payrise 66% and what do we get? 3%

We do perform on board the aircraft but after years of being told that we are overpaid and as Geoff Dixon said 'a necessary evil' its easy to see why moral is at its lowest point in years.

Just look at the employee engagement results! Management should be too embaressed to even discuss them.

Just for your reference I do perform and very well and I have improved my position within the company. I wasnt around in the good old days so I dont sit around complaining about what might have been. I certainly dont expect anymore then 9% over 3 years because thats just the way Qantas is and sadly unions won't win the fight in this area.

What I do have a problem with Matt_W is the future of all Qantas group cabin crew and the future of people like yourself who want the chance at their dream job.

But thanks to this "business" you call Qantas the best you can ever hope for within Qantas mainline cabin crew is a casual position within short haul or a fixed term in long haul (BTW if you werent aware fixed term crew cant be put onto 5 year contracts or even be extended beyond 1 year unlike Woodside and BHP and this isnt going to change within the next couple of years), your only other option as you noted is to go off-shore to Auckland or London. What sort of future or life is that? You get a fixed term position and 1 year later you find yourself out on the street just like the current fixed termers will find themself or you go overseas and work for inferior conditions and salary, is this the sort of future you want? Working as a casual forever in a day or going overseas thats your only options, thanks to Qantas.

Australian Airlines are now even discussing overseas bases so you may also find this time next year that Australians are unable to obtain a cabin crew position with this airline either, further reducing opportunities for people like you to develop a long term career as cabin crew, plan your future and develop a stable life for yourself.

I agree some "strikebreakers" were mislead and others couldnt give a toss but because of the use or threatened use of strikebreakers and the strikebreakers willingness to work during past EBA negotiations people like you now cannot obtain a permanent position with our national carrier but 400-500 UK Nationals can in their own country with their family and friends close by and they now have all the opportunities for a future and career (ie promotions) within the industry which otherwise would have been rightfully yours.

Sadly you will never enjoy a permanent position, cabin crew career and the associated conditions like myself, so you will always be on the outside looking in even if you did manage to obtain a casual/fixed term/off-shore role because I certainly wouldnt call any of those options a career.

STR and Galley Hag,

You have just made the most significant remarks and it is so refreshing to see on this site.

I couldn't agree more about the dismill payrise the cabin crew got over the 3 year period. It was truly heart breaking considering the huge pay rise "the management" gave themselves.

I mean that whole-heartidily...

Oz, I'm NOT going to discuss my position within the company due to QF C/C SOP's, but rest assured i'm looking at my shocking AISC card right now as i type this post. It's a shocker.

Look guy's, I understand the position and anxiety you feel. I feel that the cabin crew are under-rated and I know first hand how hard you/we all work. But, it's only a matter of time til such departments as ground crew and even techie's will be contract. I envisage it happening within the next ten year period. It is sad that unions are making deals with the companies "and they are" but I see so many people within the QF network who still have their heads buried in the sand and think that things will go back the way they were. They won't. I hope I didn't ruffle to many feathers but it seems there are alot of people with their noses out of joint and they don't seem to have a common or direct problem towards QF or what they are ticked off about. Instead they blame everything and anything just to be heared. I "can" understand that.

I guess what is most disappointing on this site is the slandering that always seems to rear its ugly head on such posts. I know I'm guitly of it too. Then again it's probably easy when you cannot associate a face or emotion to the one you are directing a post too.

Anyway guy's I hope things do pan out and look forward to seeing you in the sky soon. Take care, best wishes...Matt
