Yes, Bremerhaven, and regret not Louisiana. Simply an Aztec, but in days long gone of limited approach aids, the dockside cranes were a touch threatening.

Looks like Africa doesn't it? But no.
Fairly close to the equator though (about 500 miles or so).
International and domestic flights until the mid 70's. Then many years of military only usage.

This country has something in common with Brazil, historically. But Brazil is many hundreds of times larger than this country.

So, Portugal if I read the Brazil reference correctly. Baucau, East Timor? A nephew from New Zealand has worked in the country, says it was a difficult time. The 'Aardvark' I imagine to be Australian.

East Timor's longest runway and what will likely become a busier airport than the capital (Dili) in the future -- if Timor tourism ever gets a good foothold.

Here's the view I had on approach the first time I landed at Baucau. The scarred landscape is from an IL76 that had recently crashed short of the runway...

And yes re the Aarvark being RAAF. At several keys points in the transition period after Timor's independence vote (from Indonesia) Australia's contingency plans and involvement included the potential of F111 use, hence many sorties over Timor.
Trivia: Baucau is the site of the only (publicly known) hijacking of an Australian military aircraft.

Thanks. I by-passed Timor in 1990 as I headed East from Bali. The Google Earth which I found displayed a large refugee presence I think.

Bypassing East Timor in 1990 was a VERY GOOD idea. There was much nastiness (mostly unknown or unreported to the outside world) going on there at that time.
