Seems like a few helipads snow cleared for use so somewhere that choppers frequent

spook 10th Oct 2017 10:27

That Longranger looks familiar - so KGCN?

jensdad 10th Oct 2017 11:53

Well, I was in the right hemisphere at least!! :)

jensdad,

Sorry about that. The snow was a deliberate "white herring". ;)

Grand Canyon Airport, 4 nm south of the canyon, 9000' runway and 6609' ASL. That would be a QFE of about 800 mb, if you could wind your altimeter back that far!

A very busy place, with helicopters and fixed-wing tourist flights.

I took a flight in an EC-130T2. Even though I have quite a bit of mountain flying experience, I found it quite disconcerting to go from a few hundred feet AGL to over 5000' in a few seconds! See 3:00 in this video:

I also took a Caravan flight over the canyon to Page and then a raft trip from the Glen Canyon dam to Lee's Ferry.
Grand Canyon is definitely a bucket list item.

spook has control.

Very good challenge, I42. jensgrandma has been to the Grand Canyon, and in fact possibly to that airfield I believe, but her son hasn't made it yet. As you say, definitely on the bucket list!

I landed at Marble Canyon earlier this year (it's a stone's throw from Lee's Ferry). It's a lovely part of the world. The Glen Canyon Dam tour near Page is well worth doing. Russ.

Why the kink in the road ? in the lead in to the threshold,

WIDN62 11th Oct 2017 21:24

Perhaps the snowplough driver sneezed!

WIDN62 13th Oct 2017 22:21

As nobody has had a go, a clue might be "Bolero".

jensdad 13th Oct 2017 22:51

As in Torvill & Dean doing their stuff to Ravel's Bolero at Sarajevo?

WIDN62 13th Oct 2017 23:15

Yes indeed - you have control.

jensdad 14th Oct 2017 01:30

Thanks, WIDN62. Good clue, I would never have got it without that. I did think the surrounding buildings looked like they could be in the Balkans, but the airfield and the runway itself look pretty small - must just be an optical illusion with the poor visibility and snow.

Still can't get the hang of uploading photos - Browser issues I think - so OPEN HOUSE.

Russell Gulch 14th Oct 2017 19:33

Heathrow Harry 14th Oct 2017 20:15

Russell Gulch 14th Oct 2017 21:03

Russ
