Yes. It's a Bluie!

Terry Dactil 29th Jul 2017 01:54

That helps.
I'll go for Bluie East 2 then.

Mark 1 29th Jul 2017 02:16

Correct!

Ikateq airfield. Still remarkably good condition.
Apparently the government have agreed to fund a clean up of all the detritus from when it was abandoned in the '40s. Mostly empty fuel drums but also lots of trucks and machinery.

Over to you.

Terry Dactil 29th Jul 2017 02:22

Thanks.
It must have been a real fun place to be posted to during the war.
I think I would have preferred a Pacific island instead.

Nothing handy here, so open house.

S Pacific?

Tarawa? Didn't the USAF repatriate some boides from WW2 in the last few years???

mgahan 30th Jul 2017 10:17

Harry,

The pedant in me says that one out of two is not good enough - but that one is the airport name so on the basis of the old controllers bond well done! Bonriki it is.

Check out the latitude and you'll need to reconsider the "South Pacific"

The USMC are certainly recovering remains from the Battle of Tarawa and repatriating them home with appropriate ceremony on the apron. On Tuesday last that was complete with a three star. The second C17 airlift of this type we've seen this year and the recovery team are still on site.

Great to see the first operational use of the new lights was for the departure of that aircraft and its significant cargo.

Excellent challenge TBH

Only got it so fast as I've been there - that's what triggered the idea - and I'd seen several bits about repatriating bodies over the last few years.......

Not quite as remote as Tuvalu but still.............. nice people at both
